vale of tears, that was very thorough! wow! ;D i do think that your analyses of those scenes in DJG would be impressive enough to turn it into a formal dissertation of DJG! How about that? A very scholarly paper on DJG and its lessons and impact on the lives of viewers. let's just be careful that you don't get petitioned by the ministers to be exiled. ;D I agree with you completely maedayeve, I mean I can't be as analytical and expressive as Valeoftears, that's why I have been posting so many pictures and graphics...hehe! ;D ;D You know what they say, "A picture paints a thousand words" so if folks don't undestand what I was on about then I would suggest they look at the pictures or graphics...hah! it is a wonderful world we live in ;D ukfan

MY! valeoftears, you really are the champion analytical one on this board. Like WOW ;D that was really a comprehensive read Unlike me, seems I have got nothing worthy to offer, besides reading and absorbing whatever that comes in my way... ... sad

Thanks for the compliments - I guess it's just me and my tendency to psychoanalyse things that come my way. People say I do it too much sometimes. I am sure everyone has personal interpretations of the drama and expresses (or does not express) them in one's own way. Guess it's all part of being human.I can't do comic strips like ukfan and maedayeve do. Ask me to voice these and I can't say a word.

adulatio, valeoftears! wow you're really good...you could write a whole cribs notes on this.
i have many many fav scenes, but one that stood out in my mind and i think no one has mentioned thus far is when JG and Lady Han have just finished going to the docs for advice on her numb tongue, and they're sitting on the boat, facing away from each other, absorbed in their own line of thinking. Lady Han wants JG to be her assistant in the competition b/c that's the way she can successfully contest, but JG thinks this would betray Lady Jung's goal b/c she'll fail Lady Han with her temporary disability. It slowly builds up, then Lady Han turns around and asserts 'I need you!'.
On my first watch, that line really hit me. I consider it one of the most powerful scenes in the show, not least because it exhibits the differences in power that the 'Han' and 'Choi' teams have. The power Lady han and JG have is 'emotive', power is invested in their emotional rapport for each other. This explains why, as valeoftears so eloquently expresses, even when they're in the worst situation, their mentorship bond with each other makes them the most powerful characters in the show. On the other hand, Lady Choi and her gang's power is 'active' - it depends on getting something done for themselves and getting something done to others at their expense. Without that capacity, they're reduced to simply nothing in their own eyes (an open hand that lets the sand fall through rather than a closed fist that Lady Choi always seems to have when she's mad), but in the eyes of JG when they're 'nothing' they're simply the potential to beautify the world as much as JG and Lady Han and Lady Jung did.
Also, I thought the way they were sitting on the ship said a lot. First they're turned away from each other, but in the end they face each other, as if portraying the desparate need for resolution; a resolution not just to win the comp, but to stick together and see out their common ideals.
The line 'I need you' is so wonderfully expressive, there's so much emotion packed into it. I really cried a lot when I first heard it! There was a sense of isolation (everything was going the Choi's way at the time, plus I thought this was emphasised by the mountainous background - mountains are grand edifices and hey look at the two little people sailing underneath it!), a sense of desparateness, a sense of fear, but most importantly, I also heard a sense of hope, perhaps even dignity, because Lady Han's conviction in her goal of seeking justice and restoring the 'rightness' of how things should be. That's why she keeps pushing JG to be her assistant and will take no one else who could easily fall into the Choi's trap by taking shortcuts - I'm referring to the bit where Lady Han has banished JG from the palace and while she's at the medical farm the other three girls beg Lady Han to be her assistant but all fail because they were only in it for short term gain and do not have the longer term, wider vision and goals that JG has.
I also noticed the parallels between Lady Han and Dr Shin in their teaching methods (both are my fav characters)...both ask and teach JG to think beyond her own present knowledge. To be a more wholesome individual, they taught her not to be too comfortable with what she knew, because that's the greatest source of pride. Instead, by not revelling in knowing one half of the story, they taught her how to do or see things from the other half, because knowing and sticking to one perspective only limits your potential. That's why Lady Han tells JG to use her sense of touch and 'drawing taste'(??) to transcend what she merely knew from using her tongue. Adaptability is important, JG in the end learns to cook the best dishes based on the ingredients given in each scenario. Likewise, Dr Shin in a particularly strict manner teaches JG to not rely on her memorisation skills...to be the complete and effective doctor she had to go beyond textbooks and adapt herself to each patient.
apologies for the long rant, but i really wanted to put out the beauties inherent in the scene!

hey moo, that's one of my favourites too! I think we have another valeoftears on board too!! hehe... ;D Took me THIS long to settle down on my few favourite scenes... (not exactly very deep like the previous ones ;D) Don't know if somebody mentioned this before; 1) When MZH and JG were sorta escaping from the palace, the snow was so deep, and thus the ever so chivalrous MZH piggybacked JG... Then JG was saying her father lay stones along the river for her mum to walk on, and so her mum married him. LOL. So MZH asked JG to come down so he could do the same (but now on snow), and JG must pretend she didn't know and walk... But however JG said "ÄÄÓÐÕâÖÖÊÂ?" or "Where got such thing?"<-- sorry! irresistible to put! it's singlish! ;D (If in English, not sure how to write to give that effect... ;D), but MZH insisted but JG refused and clung tightly to him... haha it showed the fun side of them which you rarely got to see ;D Found this scene very sweet 2) Lady Min teaching Yeong Saeng to breathe in the energy from the moon... HAHA... Just love those 3 expressions from LM,CE and YS... LOL 3) When little JG was answering the questions asked by the Top Lady in the entry exam ;D hoho you should see the faces of surprise on the Ladies' faces when little JG was shooting off the answers like a machine gun ;D Ohhh! That right hand lady of the Top Lady had this look of "Surely you won't know how to answer this question" kind of look... Wanted to box her ;D HAHA it was nice to see Lady Choi smiling (real smile) for a change... hehe ---- I'll be back for more!!! haha ;D ;D

ukfan, thanks for the concern.. i still got a bad flu..its been 3 days...
if u have time, u can upload them for other people to see... we may not know it but DJG will be shown somewhere in some part of the planet.. so the fever still go on and on.... ive already got a boxset, so i can watch it over and over and over again without tiring...
hey moo... that was a very good analysis... even the shortest lines can have infinite interpretations... the scenes you mentioned (esp LH and JG on the boat) were very touching...
i can say, that the drama was built on "unspoken" love and commitment of people... literally!!!! u can just feel the warmth of love between lady han and JG even during the times that they've cried, got angry, or whatever... on MJH and JG, nobody said "I love You" or kissed but we really felt their emotions.... wahhhhh!!!!! that was the beauty of the drama... and i think, people feel warmer to have hugs hugs hugs than the torrid kiss... ehhehehe.. right??? asians, especially, are quite silent(or shy) to speak of what they really feel...
oops, there goes the bell, have to work now... hopefully... this post of mine made some sense.. ehheehhehe...

You wish is my command Jasmine! ;D Here is another VOD - A trip tp the doctor's - JG lost her sense of taste and Lady Han took her to see a couple of doctors. The is especially memorable because of the conversation they had on their way back to the palace. To watch click: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaVPTddwKPY ps. Thanks moo for your marvelous description of this scene . ...and get well soon Jasmine

I'm way late to this thread, having just found this board recently. But I can't resist mentioning some of my favorite scenes.
There are too many good scenes to remember them all. But three come to mind right now.
One was the scene where Keum Young has her last meeting with Jang Geum, and returns her mother's letter to her, which she had not burned as Lady Choi instructed her to do. Seeing Jang Geum's surprise, she said:
"That's me. Not fully devoted to my family: but I have no ways of my own." It was a very sad, but accurate, description of herself.
Another was when the King is on his death bed, he confesses to Jang Geum that it was only her presence that enabled him to endure the pain, sadness, and loneliness of his position. Jang Geum said it was only the King's presence/love/friendship that allowed her to endure her own pain, sadness, and loneliness. This in spite of the fact that the King's allowing Min Jeong Ho to be exiled was the cause of much of her unhappiness. But Jang Geum did not hold a grudge, and could see that the King genuinely loved her.
And third was the scene when Min Jeong Ho had just spoken privately with the King, asking him to make Jang Geum his personal physician, since that was her true path, and to allow himself to carry away all the disloyalty, and pay for all the chaos in the court, by being put to death. Then Min Jeong went straight to see Jang Geum, and she asked him:
"What did you say to the King? Did you tell him that you'll be at my side for 10 . . . 20 . . . 100 years?" She is afraid of what she sees in his eyes, as he remains silent, and she says:
"You didn't forget, did you? You surely didn't forget, right?"
I love that scene. It shows just how much she loves Min Jeong Ho, how frightened and lost she feels at the prospect of losing him, how much she depended on his being in her life forever.
