I think it's a feather duster, too! ;D

Its a wonder he got up to his rank. He's too emotional and acts on impulse. Not exactly solider material, let alone General.

But he's crafty and has come up with some winning strategies. Have we seen him lose a lot of troops? I don't recall. There have been many battle deaths, but so often they are due to obstinately sticking to a plan, and I think Xue Rengui is flexible. imo, off the top of my head, with no specific details....

Oh, I disagree that he's not military material. He showed himself early on to be a brave warrior, and he's also shown that he's a crafty tactician. Impulsive, yes, absolutely a valid criticism. As a top-of-the-ladder guy more recently he's made a few oddly impulsive decisions just because someone said Hey why don't you do such-and-such. Especially when a weirdo like Shin tells him to attack and he immediately goes for it--how plausible is that.
Remember, he didn't work his way up the ladder; the Tang emperor made him a general to reward him for his bravery in helping rescue a retreating Tang army division that was coming under attack (I believe outside of Ansi castle, although my memory's fuzzy on the location). So I doubt he has any real training or knowledge as a strategist. On-the-job learning from your mistakes, I guess.
So it might be a feather duster, huh? Well, it does look like one, but why would a general be dusting anything? Hmmm...maybe the prevailing winds bring in lots of dust from the Gobi Desert and he has to brush it off his maps.
I still think it might be a weapon. "Give me all your steamed buns or I start tickling the hostages!"

Even though he's the enemy i think he's pretty funny. Its funny how he can't read and how easily he gets mad.......he's a good character for a bad guy.

That's a nice way to put it bowflex! He's a rather amiable person. Someone you can approach and have a good laugh with. He's also intelligent and full of charisma, but he's on the "wrong" side! Sort of screws THAT up.

He also has a sense of honor. He submitted to torture rather than give away the Queen. He insists on laying waste to Ansi Fort because, as he says it, "the cries of his men under the ground" still ring in his ears. General Xue is such a rich character. He provides much needed comic relief but he's no buffoon and can be volatile and unpredictable. It may sound off the wall but he shares many character traits with Donald Trump! ;D
They are both extreme risk-takers. They are both highly charismatic and inspirational. They are natural leaders. They are high-rolling gamblers, yet aren't foolish. The risks they take are calculated. They don't suffer fools and insist upon excellence. They are both good at spotting talent. And they are both unforgettable! ;D

I find his character exaggerated and annoying. He has courage - so do all of them.

Love-him! He always makes me laugh until my sides hurt...I find it hilarious when Rengui would receive a message, and he'd be turning it upside down in a futile attempt to read it, then he would sort of throw it at poor Hongpei. Lol, how long does he think he can hide the fact that he is illiterate? I can't get enough of this guy! Also: don't you love it when he looks and waves his red "feather duster" into the camera? ;D (I see I'm not the only one who thinks it's a feather duster...)
