He gained victories over the Japanese in cooperation with regular army, especially with Kim Shi-Min's troops. In January 1593, Kim Myun was appointed Commander of Right Kyungsang army but he died of sickness in March when he was preparing an attack over the Japanese at Sunsan. (We will see Kim Shi-Min in future episodes. But Kim Myun is absent in this drama like as many other militia guerrilla leaders.) the 16th May- Toyotomi Hideyoshi receives the report on the capture of Seoul. 14) the Battle of Hae-yu-ryong, Yangju (Kyung-ki) - attack : Shin Gak, Yi Yang-Won - defence : ? - The 1st Victory of Chosun Army. - Vice Marshal Shin Gak beheaded about sixty Japanese soldiers. Great stuff, Florel. Would you mind posting some info about the battle of Young-In? After seeing Episode 69, I was wondering how many men were involved on the Japanese side.
By the way, after the battle, what happened to Yi Kwang?

Captain A, before arriving the Battle of Yong-In, I have so many stuffs to tell. (* When I mentioned this battle first in another thread, I miss-spelled the toponym "Yong-In" as "Young-In". Sorry. Mea culpa !) I haven't updated my chronicle because of two reasons. One is personal reason so I don't explain it here. The other reason is spoiler problems especially for Chicagoan viewers. OKey, I can give you small infos now about Yong-In battle and Yi Kwang. In the battle of Yong-In, the number of Japanese troops is estimated about 1,600. On the other hand, 50,000 Chosunese peasant troops were commanded by civilian officials. All of three provincial governors were men of letters, so they didn't know about warfare. Yi Kwang was discharged from his post (Governor of Cholla province) after the battles of Ungchi and Ichi (the 7th - the 8th July 1592). These battles are not shown yet in American airings. In the drama, Yi Kwang appeared first in episode 36. In 1589, he was Governor of Cholla province and he offered to YSS a post of his staff officer when YSS had no appointment after having returned from Chosan Fort. (I guess a different actor played the role of Yi Kwang in Ep. 36. ) His last appearance in the drama is before the battles of Ungchi and Ichi. I'll write more about him when I'll arrive at the moment of these battles in my chronology if there would be no one who would like to tell his personal history.

Well, I found a device to reduce spoiler problems : font color ! But the following postings contain spoilers at least up to Episode 72. Attention !!!************************************************** Chronology and Battles of the Imjin War (5)1592 (Imjin Year)the 24th May- Governors of three provinces, Yi Kwang (Cholla), Yun Seon-Gak (Chung-chong) and Kim Su (Kyung-sang), having gathered at Ohn-yang in Chung-chong province, start marching northward in order to recover Seoul with 50,000 troops (named "South Royal Troops"). - Ep. 69the 25th May17) Battle of Jung-am-jin at Ui-ryong (Kyung-sang) - Ep. 72- attack : Gwak Jae-Woo (militia) -> several hundreds ? - defence : Ankokuji Ekei (6th Contingent) -> 2,000 troops - Victory of Chosun militias. They check the river-crossing operation of the Japanese troops and hinder their advance toward Cholla province.Jung-am pavilion and the Nam River (where Gwak Jae-Woo fought against the Japanese) Fact & Fiction :Gwak Jae-Woo's battle depicted in Ep. 72 refers to the famous battle of Jung-am-jin. The battle in the drama is situated around on the 20th June while Jung-am-jin battle in real history was held in the end of May. Another minor modification of date for dramatical effect.
In the drama, Gwak Jae-Woo and his volunteer soldiers fight against Kobayakawa Takagage himself. In actual battle of Jung-am-jin, they combated against a detached force of the 6th Contingent under the command of Ankokuji Ekei, a monk vassal of Mori clan. Gwak Jae Woo's tactics shown in the drama are accurate.the 27th May- Hideyoshi postponed his plan of voyage to Chosun. Instead, he decides to dispatch three administrative inspectors including Ishida Mitsunari. - Kato Kiyomasa enters in Kae-sung. - YSS receives Won Kyun's urgent report on the appearance of the Japanese fleet at Gon-yang, Sacheon. YSS decides to leave for Right Kyung-sang province on the 29th May instead of on the 3rd June, the initial rendez-vous day with Right Cholla Navy for the Second Maritime Operation. the 29th May- Ko Kyung-Myung organizes militia guerrillas in Cholla province. - Yun Du-Su assembles 10,000 troops at Pyung-yang. - YSS meets Won Kyun at Noryang. 18) Sea Battle of Sacheon (Kyung-sang) - Ep. 67-68- attack : Yi Soon-Shin - defence : A vanguard of Japanese navy - YSS destroys 13 Japanese ships. (One ship before arriving at Sacheon + 12 ships at Sacheon) - First participation of the Turtle Ship (at least two Turtle Ships) in battle. Forces of Chosun Navy : YSS - 23 battleships Won Kyun - 3 battleships total - 26 battleships Damage of Left Cholla Navy : 3 wounded (including YSS and Lt. Na Dae-Yong) Related thread : Episode 68 - Sea Battle of SacheonSacheon City

Early June- Pak Jin, Constable of Miryang, is appointed Commander of Left Kyungsang Army. (His predecessor Yi Gak was executed in May by Marshal Kim Myung-Won because he took flight before invaders.) - Militia guerrillas of Left Kyung-sang province start their activities in cooperation with Commander Pak Jin. the 1st June- Yu Sung-Ryong is reinstated into the royal court and he receives govermental order to entertain Ming's envoy, Lin Shilu (Im Se-Rok). - The 4th Contingent of Mori Yoshinari starts the attack on Kang-won province. - The 1st Contingent of Konishi Yukinaga leaves from Seoul and marches northward. the 2nd June19) Sea Battle of Dangpo (Kyung-sang) - Ep. 68 (narration)- attack : Yi Soon-Shin - defence : Kamei Korenori - YSS destroys 21 Japanese ships. - Constable Kwon Jun killed a Japanese Samurai by arrow (or gun) shot in Dangpo Battle. Who was he ? (see below) * Question : Who was the Japanese Samurai killed by Kwon Jun ? About this problem, I read or heard different arguments. 1) Kamei Korenori himself 2) Kurushima Michiyuki (aka Tokui Michitoshi??) - the drama adopts this argument about which I have no information. 3) A sub-commander of Kamei or 4) A Kagemusha of Kamei ? j/k - After the victory of Dangpo battle, YSS's officer found a golden fan of Kamei Korenori. The inscription on the fan indicated that Hideyoshi gave it to Kamei as gift. Because of this booty, the dead Samurai has been often considered as Kamei Korenori. But, according to the Japanese, he was born in 1557 and died in 1612. Nevertheless, there are no activity records of Kamei in Japanese sources after 1592. Did he die or survive from Dangpo battle ? It's interesting that there are very rare remaining Japanese records on Samurais who were killed or supposed to be killed by YSS and his men. On the other hand, it's also possible that Kamei dropped his precious fan when he took flight. Would Hideyoshi have exiled him because of this lost, so Kamei would have been silent since then ? (Why not imagining this troublesome situation for Kamei ? ) - Kamei Korenori's name is mentioned two or three times in the drama. But he does not show up.

the 3rd June- South Royal Troops (of Cholla, Chung-chong and Kyung-sang provinces) enter in Suwon Castle (Kyung-ki province) without resistance. - Ko Kyung-Myung (3,000 troops from Gwangju) and Yang Dae-Bak (3,000 troops from Namwon) gather at Dam-yang. Ko Kyung-Myung becomes the chief leader of Cholla volunteer troops. - 6,000 militia troops of Cholla province start marching to north. the 4th June- Right Cholla Navy joins YSS's fleet at Dangpo. - Ep. 69- South Royal Troops start marching toward Yong-In, south of Seoul and attack a small fortification of the Japanese. the 5th June- YSS encounters Yu Sung-In, Mayor( gunsu) of Ham-an in Right Kyungsang province, who was chasing Japanese troops with his 1,100 cavalry at Chin-hae. (* Yu Sung-In will soon become Commander of Right Kyungsang army and he will be involved in the 1st battle of Chinju.) Yu Sung-In, Commander of Right Kyungsang Army - will show up in future episodes. 20) Battle of Hoe-yang (Kang-won province) - attack : Mori Yoshinari (the 4th Contingent) -> 2,000 troops - defence : Kim Yeon-Gwang - Fall of Hoeyang Castle. - Kim Yeon-Gwang (1524-1592), Constable of Hoe-yang and a man of letters, doesn't take flight when his sub-commanders and soldiers flee from the castle. Constable Kim stays in the castle and he is killed by the Japanese. the 5th-6th June21) Battle of Yong-In (Kyung-ki) - Ep. 69- attack : Yi Kwang, Yun Seon-Gak, Kim Su -> about 50,000 troops - defence : Wakisaka Yasuharu -> 1,600 troops - 1,600 Japanse troops scattered 50,000 Chosun peasant soldiers. - This battle shows the worst combination of civil commanders and peasant "soldiers". - Composition of "South Royal Troops" : Yi Kwang (Governor of Cholla province) - 40,000 troops Yun Seon-Gak (Governor of Chung-chong province) - 8,000 troops Kim Su (Governor of Kyung-sang province) - 100 troops - Kwon Yul (High Constable - moksa of Kwangju - in black armor in the drama), and Hwang Jin (Magistrate of Dong-bok - in bleu armor) participate in this battle. They will fight again against the Japanese at Ichi Pass, Cholla province. Hwang Jin will also particiapte in the 2nd battle of Chinju as Commander of Chung-chong Army. * Short description of Yong-In Battle presented on demand of a member (Normally I don't do it. ). : At that time, Wakisaka Yasuharu deployed 600 soldiers in fortifications of Yong-In area and he was in Seoul with 1,000 mainforce units. When he heard his men attacked, Wakisaka ran to Yong-In and charged at the Chosunese. A vanguard of Chosun army crumbled. The next morning, Wakisaka made a surprise attack on the main forces of Chosuneses who were eating breakfast. Frightened peasant soldiers were scattered. Three provincial governors returned to their jurisdictional areas with remaining soldiers.

the 5th-6th June22) the 1st Sea Battle of Danghangpo (Kyungsang) - Ep. 69 (narration)- attack : Yi Soon-Shin - defence : Japanese Navy (Kurushima Michiyuki?) - YSS destroys 26 Japanese ships. - Two Japanese commanders (Kurushima Michiyuki?? and Mori Muraharu) are killed in the battle (one of them by Yi Soon-Shin the homonym's arrow shot). Forces of Chosun Navy : YSS - 23 battleships Yi Ok-Ki - 25 battleships Won Kyun - 3 battleships total - 51 battleships Ko-sung County (ancient Danghangpo)Danghangpo (actual Ko-sung County, South Kyungsang province) Festival of Danhangpo Victory * Question : When and how did Kurushima Michiyuki die ? About the death of Kurushima the elder, there are also different arguments. 1) to be killed in the battle of Danghangpo. 2) to be killed in the battle of Dangpo. - argument adopted by the dramatists. 3) to kill himself after his defeats at Danghangpo and Yulpo. - argument presented by Japanese sources. Evidently to exercise seppuku is more honorable than to be killed by enemy. - At least, what is certain is that Kamei Korenori lost his precious golden fan in the Battle of Dangpo and Kurushima Michiyuki died during the Second Maritime Operation of Chosun Navy. His death is also confirmed in a Japanese source. Kurushima Michiyuki (aka Tokui Michitoshi)

Skinz, thanks for your compliment. Normally Right Kyungsang Navy Commander Won Kyun should have retained minimum 30 battleships / maximum 60-70 battleships. But only three ships.... That's why I call him as "the idiot". The chronicles continue... ********************************************************* the 6th June23) Battle of Mu-gye (Kyungsang) - attack : Kim Myun, Chung In-Hong, Kwon Eung-Su (militia) -> 1,600 troops - defence : 7th Contingent - Chosun volunteer soldiers of Left Kyungsang province gain victory over the Japanese regular army. the 7th June24) Sea Battle of Yulpo (Kyungsang) - attack : Yi Soon-Shin - defence : the remaining 7 Japanese ships escaped from Danghangpo - YSS destroys 3 Japanese ships and captures 4 ships. the 8th June- The Japanese 1st and 3rd Contingents arrive at the Dae-dong River border, south of Pyung-yang Castle. - Yi Duk-Hyung meets Japanese monk Genso for a peace negotiation. But it comes to an impasse and breaks down. - Ming's envoy Lin Shilu (Im Se-Rok) visits Pyung-yang Castle under Yu Sung-Ryong's guidance. Lin Shilu (Im Se-Rok) - Ming's envoy in Episode 69

the 8th-9th June- YSS's fleet searches Ung-cheon and neighboring sea areas but doesn't find a Japanese ship. It's because the Japanese Navy, seized with fear, hides in Busan area. the 10th June- The Royal Court decides to leave Pyung-yang. - Chosun Navies returns to their respective military bases. The End of Second Maritime Operation. 25) Battle of Yoju (Kyung-ki) - attack : Won Ho (militia) -> 2,000 troops - defence : 4th Contingent - Victory of the Chosunese. * Won Ho (1533-1592): He passed Military Examination in 1567. One of Chosun military leaders who put down the Jurchen rebellion of Ni-tang-kae in 1583. He was Commander of Right Cholla Navy when Japanese pirates intruded into Left Cholla province in 1587. (The Japanese intrusion of Jung-hae year - the incident depicted in Ep. 31 of the drama in which Mijin's daughter was kidnapped by Wakisaka. lol) Won Ho was discharged and exiled by reason of bad defence against the Japanese. (Why ? He was Right Commander while the concerning intruded area was Left Cholla province. ) Then he retreated after being released from his exile. When Hideyoshi's invasion started, Won Ho assembled volunteer soldiers as well as remnants of a defeated Chosun army soldiers and fought against invaders. After his victory at Yoju, he was appointed High Constable of Yoju and Defence Commander of Kyung-ki and Kang-won provinces. He died in a battle in 1592. Naturally Won Ho doesn't appear in the drama. (I'm sure he was not a near relative of Won Kyun even though they belong to the same clan !)

the 19th June
- Wakisaka Yasuharu assembles his vessels at Ungpo.
31) the Battle of Kim-hwa (Kang-won)
- attack : 4th Contingent - defence : Won Ho (army) -> 500 men
- Commander Won Ho falls into an ambush and commits suicide by throwing himself from a cliff when he is driven into a corner by the enemy.
* His son Won Yu-Nam fought against the Japanese under the command of General Kwon Yul. His grandson Won Du-Pyo (1593-1664) guarded the royal carriage during the Manchurian Invasion in 1636-37. Both of them took part in the Westerners' Coup against Prince Gwang-hae in 1623.
** Off-topic : The name of Won Du-Pyo was familiar to me. It's because the first Korean historical drama I've ever seen in my life was about the Manchurian invasion and King Hyojong's project to attack Qing Empire. This drama was entitled "Dae-Myung (Great vocation)" and aired in 1981 (KBS). The hero role (Great Prince Bong-Rim, 2nd son of King Injo and future King Hyojong) was played by Kim Heung-Ki (Chung Jung-Bu in AOW). King Hyojong's revenge plan was never realized because of his premature death but it contributed, at least, to the reinforcement of national defence.
the 20th June
- The royal carriage arrives at Yong-cheon.
the 22th June
- The royal carriage arrives at Uiju. The King relinquishes his plan to seek asylum in Ming Empire.
the 23th June
- Kobayakawa Takakage captures Keum-san Castle in which he sets up the HQ of the 6th Contingent and from which he prepares to attack Cholla province. - Ep. 72 (narration)
the 25th June
32) the Battle of Woon-am at Im-sil (Cholla province)
- attack : Yang Dae-Bak (militia) - defence : 6th Contingent (Kobayakawa Takakage)
- A rear party of Ko Kyung-Myung's militias defeats a detached force of the 6th Contingent.
- Woon-am is located in a roundabout route from the south toward Jeonju, Capital of Cholla province. In fact, Governor of Cholla province Yi Kwang didn't deploy a defence force at Im-sil area while Kobayakawa Takakage was searching other route than Ungchi and Ichi Passes to enter in Cholla province. A detached force of the 6th Contingent dispatched to Woon-am was attacked by a rear party of Ko Kyung-Myung's militia guerrillas (of Cholla province) who encountered the invaders by chance when they were passing Woon-am area. Assuming that a solid defence line would have been already established at Woon-am, Kobayakawa decided to attack Ungchi and Ichi Passes. By the grace of Heaven ! Providence !
* Correction : The militia leader Yang Dae-Bak (1564-1592) dies in early July 1592. The reason of his death was overwork.
** Addition : on the 3rd June about the rise of Cholla militia troops by Ko Kyung-Myung and Yang Dae-Bak.

* a preliminary note for Ungchi and Ichi Battles (Ep. 73-74)
- Kobayakawa Takakage, chief general of the 6th Contingent, attempted to invade in Cholla province initially from Right Kyungsang province. But this tentative was failed by the guerrilla war activities of Gwak Jae-Woo (the famous Jung-am-jin Battle depicted in Ep. 72 and other many combats not mentioned in the drama). Another southern route was also blocked by militia guerrillas of Cholla province. After all of these failures, Kobayakawa finally decided to attack Jeonju, capital of Cholla province, from the north, i.e. from Keum-san via Ungchi and Ichi Passes. He especially concentrated main forces, under the command of Ankokuji Ekei, on Ungchi Pass while Kwon Yul deployed his main forces on Ichi Pass for defense.
The total forces of Kobayakawa were about 15,000 men and that of Cholla army were 2,500 men (1,000 at Ungchi and 1,500 at Ichi).
* Ungchi was also called as "Gom-ti-jae (Bear Pass)" and Ichi as "Bae-ti-Jae (Pear Pass) in indigenous Korean language.
