(This is a comment I wrote in one of my previous postings before I modified it.)
Episode 33 :
After the battle of Nok dune Island, when YSS was imprisoned, it was not Won Kyun but Constable Yi Uk-ki (also spelled as Yi Ok-ki, futur Commander of Cholla Right Navy during Imjin war) who saved YSS's life by requesting the central government's inquiry.
Yi Uk-ki is oddly absent in the Chosan Fort period of YSS. I was glad when I saw him in Ep. 53. And it's very strange for me that he acts as if he doesn't know YSS. This is an another distortion of the real history. In the same Ep. 53, General Hwang of Sado Unit (Ep.1) returns ! He is a cousin of YSS's wife.
And from Ep. 38, characters of Ep. 1-4 begin to appear.
Modification : The actor of young Admiral Yi Uk-ki did not show up in AOW. Choi Hyang was played by a homonymous actor.

Another thing. I was a little surprised when the spear instructor was killed in the Nok-dune Island battle, because I was sure he was serving on the ship with YSS (you know, that bellicose fellow always going off at the mouth). I guess they were just similar looking and acting characters.

They are different guys. Yes, they have similar looking faces and identical armors, Bo. The death of YSS's two subordinates at the Nok-Dune battle is recorded in Royal Chronicles. They are historical personages. On the other hand, the "bellicose" guy is fictional. He will return... Um.. let me see... yeah... in Ep. 50 with his father (the old oarsman in Ep. 1-4). Oddly, the new Lt. of YSS after the Nok-Dune island battle has not yet returned (up to Ep. 53 or 54). This fellow will become admiral after Imjin war. But I haven't seen him yet after the Nok-Dune period. I'm afraid if he would never return, because I heard the IYSS producers have a contract trouble with the actor. P.-S. I hope you feel better soon, Bo.

P.-S. I hope you feel better soon, Bo. Well, thank you! I think I'm about totally recovered. It was just a spasm in the muscles--painful, but not permanent. It happens about every 5 years or so, takes a day or two to go away. Thank you so much for this thread. You're so great to help us figure out all of this history in relation to the story. Bo

I'm happy to hear you being recovered, Bo. I found comparative photos. And, as like Bo, I realized that they look too similar ! Seo Han-Su (fictional) in Ep. 1-4 Oh Hyung (historical) : the spear instructor of Chosan Fort and Nok Dune Island.

Ep. 38 :
The ex-prisoner Gong Tae-Won (the recalcitrant and resentful guy who aids Mijin's daughter) is a historical personage. His name is mentioned three times in the Admiral's war diaries in 1595-1596. But it's not certain when and where YSS met him first time.

I realize again why I have never confounded, as like other Korean viewers, the bellicose Han-Su with the spear instructor Oh Hyung in spite of their similar look. They speak different dialects. Han-Su speaks with the accent of Kyung-Sang province (south-east of Korea) and Oh Hyung speaks the northern province dialect. It's evident that non-Korean speakers have identification difficulties because they don't have this kind of clue.

Ep.31: The japanese intrusion of Junghae year (February, 1587) Sa Hwa Dong (aka Sa Eul Hwa Dong) is a historical person. He was naturalized in Japan and guided the japanese intrusion into South Cholla (also spelled as Jeolla or Jeonra) province in 1587. This incident is recorded in the Royal Chronicles with his name. Considered as a traitor, he was sent back to Korea on demand's of the Chosun government and executed in 1590 (Ep. 38). His wife (Mijin's daughter) is fictional, of course.

WAKIZAKA YASUHARU Served Akechi Mitsuhide (who eliminated Oda Nobunaga) from 1576-82. Later, joined Hideyoshi and became a naval commander who directed ships during the Kyushu and Odawara campaigns. The primary general in the Korean Invasion. Was heavily defeated by YSS in the Battle of Hasendo in 1592. After the war, he switched side in the battle of sekigahara and went with Tokugawa. Earlier in the series, there was a scene where Hideyoshi was talking to young Wakizaka then it went to a young YSS, which had to be 1560s or early 1570s. This couldn't have happen since Wakizaka was serving Mitsuhide at that time or still looking for a job. Thank you, Skinz, for this information. I had a doubt of him. I have watched up to Ep. 53. We have already seen Kato Kiyomasa and recently Todo Takatora. Konish is the most interesting japanese character. I'm wondering why he acted in that ridiculous attitude in Episodes 1-4, because the actual Konishi the pacifist in the drama is very different person. Actually, Todo Takatora becomes my favorite character among japanese samurai. I always prefer a smart guy. ;D Thank you again for your rescue. ;D

I accidently deleted my previous posting on Chinju Battles when I tried to anglonized some french words which I used unconsciously. I wanted to correct vocabulary mistakes that change entirely the signification of phrase. But it's the posting itself which disappears by mistake of click. Aigu I try to recover a part of important points with some detail additions : - The first siege of Chinju continued from the 5 Octobre to 10 October 1592. At this battle, the Japanese lost 20,000 troops out of 30,000 against 3,800 Korean troops under the command of Kim Shi-Min. Unfortunately, Kim Shi-Min was wounded by a bullet in the head at the end of the battle. About the date of his death, there are two theories : the on the 18 October or on the 26 December 1592. He died at the age of 38. At that time, he was more famous than YSS among the Japanese by his victory at Chinju. - The second siege of Chinju took place between the 22-29 June 1593 by 100,000 Japanese troops against 3,500 Korean soldiers and militias. The Japanese wanted to have their revenge on Kim Shi-Min without knowing his death. Resentful at the first failure, Hideyoshi ordered to exterminate everyone and to destroy everything in the Chinju castle. After gaining victory, the Japanese troops massacred 60,000 civilians. And... the famous story of Non Gae, a Korean woman who plunged into the river with a Lt. of Kato Kiyomasa. The Chinju Castle and the statue of Kim Shi-Min www.kimsimin.or.kr/kimsimin/img/jinsoosajuk2.jpg

Thanks for all the information and for the pictures, skinz. Japanese history must be your favorite area of study. Are some of those pictures figures ("toy" soldiers, er, samurais) that you have?
