the 7th-8th July33) the Battle of Ungchi (Cholla) - Ep.73- attack : Ankokuji Ekei (6th Contingent) - defense : Chung Dam, Yi Bok-Nam, Hwang Bak (army and militia) -> 1,000 troops - Collapse of the defense line at Ungchi Pass. *** triple defense lines of Cholla Army at Ungchi *** First defense line : Hwang Bak (militia leader) -> 200 men Second defense line : Yi Bok-Nam (Assistant official - pangwan - of Naju) -> 400 men Third defense line : Chung Dam (High Magistrate - gunsu - of Kimje) -> 400 men - Chung Dam (commander in red armor in the drama) is killed in the battle. He doesn't want to retreat and he fights until his death. - When all defense lines were collapsed, Yi Bok-Nam retreats to An-duk-won with surviving soldiers. But in the drama, Yi Bok-Nam in the second defense line seems to be killed. lol In real history, he became Commander of Cholla Army in 1596 and he committed suicide when he lost the battle at Namwon in 1597. If the dramatist really killed Yi Bok-Nam (commander in blue armor?), I don't see how they will show the battle of Namwon without him. I'm afraid ********** (censured because of spoiler). Of course, they didn't explicitly mention his name. But we also have another example of Hwang Jin. ****************** Spoilers Episode 74 ********************
- Yi Kwang, governor of Cholla province fled when he heard the Japanese troops marching toward Jeonju. It was militia volunteer soldiers and civilians who remained at Jeonju and defended the castle.
- After breaking through the defense line at Ungchi Pass, Ankokuji's troops arrived near to Jeonju Castle. But they didn't start a siege and they waited for the arrival of Kobayakawa's troops at Jeonju. Ankokuji lost many men at Ungchi because of Cholla army's resistance. But they had to retreat from Jeonju because Kobayakawa's troops were defeated at Ichi and their HQ at Keum-san was attacked by Ko Kyung-Myung's militia volunteer soldiers.

the 8th July34) the Battle of Ichi (Cholla) - Ep.74- attack : Kobayakawa Takakage (6th Contingent) - defence : Kwon Yul, Hwang Jin -> 1,500 troops - Chosun army wins. Cholla province is protected from the invasion. - Kobayakawa loses many men and he is obliged to retreat to Keum-san because Ko Kyung-Myung's militia is marching to Keum-san, the HQ of the 6th Contingent. - Hwang Jin, Magistrate of Dongbok (in blue armor in the drama), is seriously injured by a bullet. In the following year, he will become Commander of Chungchong Army and participate in the 2nd Battle of Chinju. He dies in this battle. But the dramatists kill him in the Battle of Ichi. lol. - The 2nd Battle of Chinju is not depicted in the drama. We have good reason to assume that the dramatists would not show the Battle of Namwon. Because Yi Bok-Nam seems also to be kicked out in the Battle of Ungchi. Hwang Jin was gone in the Battle of Ichi and no 2nd Chinju Battle ! - After this battle, Yi Kwang is sacked and Kwon Yul is promoted to Governor of Cholla province. Chronology and Battles of the Imjin War (7)1592 (Imjin Year)the 15th July- YSS writes a memorial to the Court about his victories at Hansando and Angolpo. Thanks to these victories during the 3rd Maritime Operation, he is promoted to Junghundaebu, the honorific literati aristocratic title on the Second Senior High Rank. Yi Ok-Ki and Won Kyun receive the title of Kasundaebu on the Second Junior Low Rank. (Cf. The dramatists locate these promotions in Episode 71, i.e. after the Second Maritme Operation and before the Sea Battle of Hansan Island.) the 17th July- Death of Captain Han Baek-Rok. - Ep. 76 (narration)Han Baek-Rok (1555-1592) : Captain of Jisepo, then Garrison Commander of Busan. Han Baek-Rok was born in Chun-cheon, Kang-won province in 1555 and he passed Militay examination in 1580. He was Captain of Jisepo of Right Kyungsang Navy when the Imjin War broke out. After gaining victories over the Japanese navy with YSS and Won Kyun, he was appointed Garrison Commander of Busan. (I couldn't find the date of this appointement.) He died, on the 17th July 1592, after being injured by a bullet in a battle. Some regional secondary informations on web say that he died in the battle of Mijohang or in the battle of Busan Port. But I'm doubtful of it because there are no record of battle hold in those places on that date. (YSS's Battle of Busan was on the 1st September. And Mijohang is situated on Namhae Island, near of Yosu, i.e. the Left Cholla Navy's main base.) Won Kyun mentioned the death of Han Baek-Rok in his memorial to the court presented after the battle of Hansan Island. It's more convincible to consider that he was wounded in the battle of Hansando (8th July) or in the battle of Angolpo (10th July) and died about a week later.

luv, glad to see you again. I guess you haven't shown yourself in the forum for a while. Thanks for your encouragement. But I'm worrying at the fact that the chronicles are becoming too voluminous, so too tedious to read. It's far from being finished. The war continued during SEVEN YEARS ! LOL About photos, I borrowed characters' pictures from Choko, our great image supplier, and others from web. I'm grateful to all of those who posted these pictures. and by the way, "the idiot" suits won kyun so well.... Absolutely ! He is the little idiot-piggy ! *********************************************** BTW, as I've predicted, the dramatists didn't show the Battle of Namwon. One of YSS's sub-commanders died in this battle in 1597. But it's not mentioned. Limited budget and limited time. Understandable.
