I don't think the CP is simply a tyrant. I think he has some serious emotional issues and does not know how to deal with them. He behaves like a tyrant, then he's all sensitive, dismayed and weeping. The tyrant comes out as a cover up.
Nevertheless, I think he's a very unpleasant boy in need of some therapy (or maybe the security of having a truly loving father to respect and inspire him). I'm no therapist...I'm just saying.

I agree sekeremaker, the CP is complicated. Events, upbringing and his way of dealing with it all lead him into tyrannical actions. If he would take the time to think things through he would be a much better leader. Unfortunately he has a brash streak in him. One of the aspects of this drama that I love is the multi-dimesional characters. It's nice to see people have doubts, feelings, second thoughts, past histories & being able to change.

Ep 34 Got a laugh out of PM Yu getting a little huffy with Choongnyeong, saying he wasn't kingly material. PM Yu doesn't know the real Choongnyeong yet, only heard all the hype. Choongnyeong makes comments that seem simple or shocking on the surface, but eventually reveal considerable thought. Auri has some far fetched plans. Does she really think the Crown Prince would be happy living in a little house the rest of his life? I am still wondering about her motives. The Queen laments about the disgusting world and hideous royal house, but the King and CP just carry on as usual. Neither seem to care enough to listen to her. She took a rough beating from the CP when she barged in on him with the Crown Princess. He was really nasty. The King is leaving for 15 days? Leaving the CP in command? Seems fishy to me.

On the one hand, I thought, the King must be out of his mind leaving the CP in command. But, I think he realizes that he is going to have to give up the throne someday and, as far as he knows, he's going to have to give it to the CP. Therefore, he had to step out on faith and trust him (CP) one more time. When the King was saying goodbye and leaving town, he turned and gave a l-o-o-ong look at the CP. It was clear to me that he knew it was not going to turn out well. Even though he has little confidence in the CP, what else could he do?
As for Auri, I think she's truy in love with the CP and he with her. So, why did she throw his ring away. Is she thinking that their love is doomed to fail? Does she think he's going to reject her when he finds out what she's up to (trying to destroy him so he can live with her in a fairy tale cottage happily ever after)? I feel sort of sorry for him. He thinks he's found true love at last and he's about to get his heart fed to him thru a straw.
Question: If the CP hates the CPrincess (and he does), does that mean he hates his son too? He left nothing behind for him, but left a keepsake for Auri's baby. I know his legit son is going to have much more going for him than the b*****d son, but it's not the size or importance of the gift. It's the fact that he WANTS the baby to have some part of him...nevermind that it's only a material part.
Thanks

EPISODE 34 Auri truly seems to be in love with the CP but she's hard to read because she acts and looks so deceptive. Her expressions give you the impression that she's plotting something. It was different with escort Chogungjang, the CP seduced her but Auri went after him. I guess being a good father or husband isn't high on the list for most of the men. The father of the Crown Princess, Gim Hanlo, cares more about his position than his daughter's feelings. I feel bad for the Princess. If it isn't the CP rejecting her or her own father, Auri comes along and tells her the Crown Prince doesn't have an ounce of feelings for her. Now Auri is pregnant! Brutal. What do all these women see in him anyway? Is it because he's the CP? I understand the pain of the Crown Princess but not to the point of drinking arsenic! How could you even conceive of that idea and in front of your young son nonetheless. CP Yangnyeong gets the award for worst son, husband and father, right next to the King. I couldn't believe how awful he was to his mother and with her being ill, what a jerk! He says his wife is becoming just like his mother, well he's just like his father, whom he doesn't respect either. I'm surprised the King agreed to take the Queen to the hot springs. You could tell he was apprehensive about what the CP would do plus he doesn't love the Queen. Nice manipulation by Yangnyeong and his men, even getting the other princes involved.

EPISODE 35 I'm still confused about Auri. Why did she throw that ring away and why didn't she seem happy at all that she was pregnant with the CP's child? I still don't trust her and I have to agree with Shim On when he told her "Love means protecting the one you love." It's bad enough to expose the CP's affair with her, but to expose the CP's unauthorized military action would put his life in jeopardy. What is she doing? Is it really to have him to herself and does she think he won't be punished for taking an army to the north? I'm glad Shim On went to the King with the information, although it wasn't something the Queen needed to hear on top of everything else. I liked Shim On's answer to Jo Malseng's question, "....he's a tyrant who doesn't care about his people." It's about time Hwang Hee blew his top over the Crown Prince's actions! He's been very patient with him up until now, not that the CP listens to him or anybody for that matter. I guess Hwang went along with him in hopes of stopping the CP somehow. It's good to see Prince Choongnyeong and Yun Hwe together again. Finally the prince admits his fears to PM Yu. Glad to see Gim Hanlo arrested. Weasel. The scene with the King and Yi Sookun was very sad. I actually felt sorry for Taejong after Sookbin's biting words. " You are a setting sun and the crown prince is a rising sun." Nothing like a former friend turning on you. Traitor. What a turn of events seeing Choi Yundeok and Yi Chun teaming up together. Finally it seems Yun Hwe's words (among others) and the sight of the orphans have emboldened Choongnyeong a bit. I hope he meant what he said to his brother, "Turn the troops around or I just might take the future throne from you." I was getting sick of his indifference.

Ep 35 I can't figure out Auri either! I hope she isnt just being fickle, and has an underlying reasonable motive. Doesn't seem like it... The scene with the King and Yi Sookbun was very sad indeed. Not only was Sookbun a traitor, but stupid (IMO) for following the CP without any reservations. It seemed like he had doubts here and there, but he ignored them. (and wasn't brave enough to stand up to the CP's threats) All around him, the other ministers challenged the CP, but Sookbun, among others, just jumped on the bandwagon. Perhaps Sookbun had tears in his eyes when he realized what he had done. Yun Hwe finally came up with a convincing argument that got to Choongnyeong. Instead of focusing on the Crown Prince's irresponsible actions, which Choongnyeong has accepted with resignation, Hwe focused of something Choongnyeong still cherishes: the talents ot those around him and the lives of the orphans. As Choongnyeong himself said, Hwe is a man of deep insight. ;D

A thoroughly moving episode. I'm glad I had my tissues handy.
I'm having trouble, however, figuring something out. Why does the Empress favor the CP? Why does she struggle so hard to him in line for the throne? This particular son seems to mean more to her than any of her other sons. Since she's the mother of them all, why should she care which one of them becomes King? Am I missing something or is it a cultural thing with them?
Thanks

Ep 36 Yun Hwe saves the day by bringing the orphaned children to greet the CP and his army. The little girl playing Dahm is quite the actor for her age. Loved it when she referred to Hwe as 'Uncle Chubby.' ;D ;D The Crown Prince just walks away from his meeting with his father!?! How much more defiant can he get! It's interesting how the CP's demeanor changes whenever he talks to the King; like the CP is putting on a mask. Holy smokes Auri! Are you trying to get yourself killed? "It's my fault." Eeek! Still seems fickle to me. I'm a little confused about the Queen saying she asked for Choongnyeong to be brought back to the palace. I thought Yun Hwe did so, of his own accord. Finally, the ministers are putting on a unified front and finally, someone, the PM, says that Choongnyeong should be the next prince. What a relief! Great ending scene. Love the subtle acting, when the King finally asks Choongnyeong if he would be the next crown prince: Choongnyeong looks the King in the eye, looks down, but then looks him straight in the eye again. Brilliant!

EPISODE 36 Dahm was so cute and her calling Yun Hwe "Uncle Chubby" was hilarious. ;D I often wondered how Choongnyeong could spend so much time with the orphans and not feel guilty about neglecting his own children and wife. Didn't he miss them? It was nice to see the ministers united. It seems the troublemakers have been weeded out. The CP is too much! I couldn't believe his flashback with the people cheering for him. Delusional. On top of that, he blows off meeting with his father and runs straight to Auri. It really is her fault because she's the reason he "lost this time." If he ever found out he'd be furious. I feel bad for the King and Minister Hwang Hee. They both keep sticking by the CP and giving him infinite chances to be "kingly material". He does whatever he wants and his impudent remarks are horrible. He apparently thinks his title of crown prince is solid. Wow, the PM feels so strongly about the King renouncing CP Yangnyeong that he offered his head! Interesting, has Prince Kyoungnyeong really given up on the throne? Is he truly on Prince Choongnyeong's side? Hyobin brought up something I never even considered. She was glad the CP was getting kicked out because he probably would have them killed if he became king. Prince Hyoryeong seems to be in the mix again. So he really does have ambitions for the throne. The scene with Choongnyeong returning home was very emotional. His son Hyang is so cute! How sad he didn't even know his father. Poor Princess Shim. I can't believe the Queen asked Choongnyeong to go back to Gyeongsung! She doesn't want the CP getting hurt because of him! She doesn't need to worry about that. He's doing that to himself. I agree, good closing scene.

I sure hope that smallpox wasn't contagious. Although, I didn't realize it could skip the contagious phase and go straight to death.

Good comments tinkerbell! Regarding the other princes: It would be really nice if Kyongnyeong has given up on the thone. But what about his mother?! It's not just that she wants her son on the throne, but that she wants to get revenge on the Queen. That motive may still be pretty strong. As for Prince Hyoryeong, his ambition appears to come not from his own desires, but from his desire to live up to the ideals of the deposed king (who was almost condescending towards Hyoryeong). Don't think he is really interested, but who knows how far he will go.

EPISODE 37 I felt like Prince Choongnyeong took a few minutes to choose his words wisely before answering the King. You never know if the King is testing you or not. Good answer, "Father, I am not the wise one. But if you give me a chance, I am prepared to give my best effort to become the wise one." I understand the desire to have the eldest son inherit the throne, but Queen Wongyeong must be the only one who doesn't see that Yangnyeong is not fit for the throne. How many times has she disowned Choongnyeong? He has never spoken to her like the CP has. He's a good son to her just like the other two princes. It's so good that he has the support and backing of the ministers, officials AND Kyoungnyeong!!! That was quite an exchange between the King and Hwang Hee! He was really pushing things with Taejong. Is he that loyal to the CP that he'd risk his own life? He can surely see what a screw-up he is. Is it because he so desperately doesn't want to see history repeat itself? He's lucky he wasn't killed but managed to get himself banished sticking up for the CP. Unfortunate. Gu Jongsu and Gu Jongmi were executed but Gim Hanlo gets banished. Is that because he's the CP's father-in-law? As usual he's a jerk to his daughter as he's led away. What's Jo Malseng up to going to see ex-King Jeongjong? That was a very strange conversation and it seemed as if Jo wasn't on Choongnyeong's side. Hmm That was so sad and unexpected with Prince Seongnyeong. He was such a nice, thoughtful young man. Smallpox is very contagious. Why was he the only one infected or will we see more? Sheesh, the CP leaves before even saying goodbye to his dying younger brother, his adultery is exposed again and he has the nerve to bring her to the palace because she's sick! Couldn't he have a doctor brought to her? Man, he just can't stay out of trouble.

Ep 37 Hwang Hee took me by surprise when he offered his life in exchange for the King's forgiveness of the CP. And I don't get why the King was so angry with Hee. Yes, Hee was telling the King things he didn't want to hear, but doesn't the King realize that Hee is his best supporter of the CP? Also, Hee shows extreme loyalty to the King by continuing to back the CP. Banishing Hee will remove the only minister who supports the CP. I feel sympathetic towards the Crown Princess. She doesn't seem to quite know how to play the game. Her emotions get the best of her and she ends up making nasty comments to the Crown Prince and later to Princess Shim. Her comments do nothing to further her objectives; she must be very frustrated. She also seems to be very alone (could never talk to her father in confidence), which must make her feel even more helpless. When she confronted Auri a while back and Auri wouldn't back down, why not try to dig up some dirt on Auri? The scenes with Seongnyeong brought me to tears. Very sad. And the CP leaves?! The Crown Prince is on a roll carrying Auri to the palace! Yeah, why didn't he just get a doctor to see her? Duh!
