Okay, have some questions for anyone who saw this drama. I'm up to episode 9 and I understand that some faction is against Yi San ascending the throne. That I understand. What I don't understand is who, then, do they want on the throne instead? How come they never say anything about that?? And who in heaven's name is this woman? I know she's not his mother, wife or sister. She can't possibly be his grandmother?!?! I'm a little sad now that I found out in this episode that Yi San is definitely married. I thought he was going to have a romantic relationship with Song Yeon. But how can he, when he's a married man?!?! Oh dear, oh dear... very confused and VERY sad...

Okay, so figured out she's the queen, but not Yi San's real grandmother probably... On episode 10 now. Really enjoying it. Wish someone were watching with me. ? Ohmgosh, Lee Seo Jin is sooo gorgeous!! I just realized the girl who plays Song Yeon is the same actress that was in "Rooftop Prince." I didn't recognize her cuz I didn't particularly like her in RP but like her a lot in this drama. She's cute and I just like her character.

Its his grandmother, or to be more preise, step-grandmother, who married the old king at age 15.

Geez, fiona, do you know how much work I put into posting on that drama? And NOW you get around to watching it? LOL...
If you look here--Yi San boards--and I started you at the early episodes--you'll see I did a complete recap of each episode, in its own named thread, so you don't have to worry about being spoiled as long as you have already seen that one. You might find some info in those threads about the show that helps you out. Also, if you look here, you'll find some links that I think are still good but may contain a few spoilers.
I will try to check in with you to see how you are liking it.

As for your question about who they want to ascend the throne, as you watch the drama you'll see there are many candidates, such as Yi San's brothers or some peripheral persons' son or nephew (don't want to spoil you). Most of them seemed to me to be patsies, young boys that the faction thought they could control. It seemed to me the big thing was which faction could be "in charge," and they didn't want a strong king no matter who they were. Of course, this was generally what seemed to happen in Joseon politics--everyone wanted a king they could control if possible.
Except San's mom. She wanted a strong, independent king. Don't you think?

Are you kidding me?!?! This is GREAT!!! Now I'll feel like someone is watching with me. Bo, you're the best, as I suspected...

Just want to point out that even she is too old for her character. The actress who plays Yi San's lover in this drama plays the "grandmother" in the film The Fatal Encounter, which perfectly fits her actual age as she was only 30 when Yi San became king. This means that she should only be in her 20s in the earlier part of the drama.

View Attachment Edit: this is from episode 10 I was referring to Yi San's step-grandmother you mentioned in your first post. The one that you were surprised for being so young. She should actually be even younger as she was only 30 when Yi San became king, which means she should be in her 20s in the episode you are at. And I was telling you that the the actress who plays Song Yeon in this drama plays the step-grandmother in the film Fatal Encounter, which perfectly fits her actual age. The picture I posted is her playing the grandmother in Fatal Encounter.

I totally understand you now... Yes, the pictorial guide really helped me fully grasp the concept... LOL!! Now that I have proven to anyone who is reading this thread that I am a complete imbecile, I'll go down to exercise and watch more of "Lee Seo Jin." I mean, "Yi San."

I was wondering the same thing, Bo. The only thing I can think of is that when a family is forced to sell a girl to pay a debt it's legal but when, like in case of Song Yeon, a girl is kidnapped, maybe then it's against the law??
