The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
This movie is OK. For someone that's supposed to be amazing, spider-man spends a lot of time getting beat up. I think Emma Stone is a good actress but she makes too many faces. She can get away with that in movies like Easy A and Crazy Stupid Love. In more serious roles like this or The Help, it's an annoying distraction.
Brave (2012)
Not Pixar's best effort but still a better movie than a lot of what's come out this year. I would have preferred someone other than Kelly Macdonald to voice Merida.

Lincoln
I just got back from Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. Being a history buff (which some of you know) and in general a Spielberg fan, I had anticipated this for a while. And it did not disappoint. Daniel Day-Lewis IS Abraham Lincoln, from physical appearance to voice (or at least historical accounts to what he sounded like-high pitched and squeaky). But what really impressed me on this portrayal of Lincoln is the dynamic characterization. He's a calm laid back man but shows strong determination, he can come off as being a bit jerkish-most notably to his son Robert and wife, and when he's angry he's really angry, but best of all, the guy has a fun sense of humor. He tells all sorts of funny stories (I would post them but they would spoil). A lower level director would probably have Lincoln portrayed as a cliche typical charismatic man with a deep charismatic voice, but I love that he's shown to be more wheezy and decrepit. It makes him more down to earth human rather than just an icon. Many are considering Lewis contender for the Academy Award for Best Actor. I'm one of them.
The other showstealer is Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, the Radical Republican Congressman whose views on equal rights were waaaaaay ahead of his time. Most of the movie has him verbally thrashing the pro-slavery faction, and it is a delight to watch. Even better, he openly insults them during hearings and debates and doesn't even shy away from doing the same to the Democrat leader, George Pendleton.
The cast in general is strong. Sally Field is magnificient as Mrs Lincoln and I don't think I have to mention the rest as perfromances are really strong. Alot of effort and research was put into it, and the production shows that the effort really paid off. You also know a movie is doing it right that in spite of the fact that we know the 13th Amendment will be passed, I couldn't help but feel tense and watch it happen in anticipation.
I think the movie is fairly accurate but has some pretty minor errors that don't detract the story. AJK will probably appreciate this.
Aaaah, 2012 has been a very good year for movies.... All hail Steven Spielberg!!!!

;D One of my daughters and my grand daughter went to see it and they were both very glad that they did.
A few years ago they took a vacation in Springfield, IL and visited Lincoln's home, the Lincn museum, the Library and the State House.
My daughter is also a history buff, one of her favorite subjects in school, and she was very impressed with all she learned and saw in Springffield. So they were really looking forward to seeing this movie. They agree with you as to the movie and the peformances.
Daniel Day Lewis is Oscar boud for his portrayal of Lincon. Sally Fields gave a strong performance in her role as Mary Todd Lincoln, a poor misunderstood and much maligned person.
I am looking forward to seeing it soon and enjoying it as much as those who have already seen it . Yep - Steven Spielberg is the go to guy if you want to see a top notch movie - Thanks Steve. ;D

Oh, yeah, I am looking forward to this, too. Did anyone see Colbert's interview with Doris Kearns Goodwin ("I've always said Lincoln was a sexy guy, and now I can prove it" [because Daniel Day Lewis is playing him])? PS I love her. Thanks sageuk for the review. And thanks for not telling how it ends. ;D

I thought he was Denmarkian. Don't all the Danishes live in San Fran?
Oh, Dear, on reading that again, it looks like I'm saying something I am NOT saying. LOL. Denmark was just the first country that came to mind, and I went with it.
I was thankful for a weekend at home, without having to go anywhere except the clay studio, one block away. Nice.
