A little confused about the last episode I saw. We watch Sat and Sun nite here in northeast PA. Chulin gallops off to tell Gulsabiwu that DJY's son is dead. When did Biwu find out about the baby? I must have blinked or the Eng subtitles threw me off. They aren't very good; characters speaking volumes and only three words below. Why hasn't Biwu said anything to DJY or Sudol or anybody since he's back in the fold? I LOVE this show but so much goes on that confuses me, for instance: Lee Haigu at first tells Chulin to kill DJY's baby for the good of the cause but now, all of a sudden, he's a family man. What made him change his mind? I wish I understood Korean!

Gulsabiwu learned about Chulin's baby when he overheard her and her maid talking back before Li Kgu and Chulin got together. Biwu feels a sense of honor not to tell anyone. I seem to recall that Biwu and Chulin had a talk during which she asked him to keep her secret. Perhaps he also hopes that Chulin will tell DJY herself. Li Kaigu has loved Chulin deeply for a long time. He had to think things over, but he decided that he would rather have her and her baby than not to have her at all. He decided to raise the baby as his own out of his love for her. He comes to love the baby as if it were his own. I am in the Chicago area, and we are many episodes ahead of you, so this explanation is to the best of my recollection. Perhaps other viewers will have different answers for you.

Big help, Pip. Thanks. I guess characters in historical dramas make sweeping declarations (ie "I'll cut the heart out of that blasted bastard!") and then nothing happens. But I really thought Lee Haigu wanted the baby dead. He's so out there when it comes to Chulin. It's easy to believe that the thought of her with his main rival would send him off the deep end. Your explanation about Biwu's makes sense too. He's Mr. Loyal and Honorable. The first time I saw him in this drama, DJY was still a servant. Biwu made such an impression on me with his height and powerful eyes, I thought he was the hero.

It wasn’t a case of him overhearing. Chulin’s attendant (darn it, I can never remember that woman’s name) took Gulsabiwu aside when he was in the Tang camp—and about to leave—that the baby was DJY’s and that he shouldn’t leave until Chulin was strong enough to go with him. The attendant is a Goguryean woman, and as I recall, she desperately did not want DJY’s baby to be killed. At first Gulsabiwu tried to talk Chulin into escaping with him, but that didn’t work so he decided to stay and even swore allegiance to Xue Rengui just so he could keep watch over his blood-brother's baby.
As for Kaigu, he did indeed want the baby killed because he feared it would grow up to take revenge on Khitan for its father’s death (DJY was believed dead at the time). But after Kaigu stepped forward in front of the Khan and took responsibility for impregnating Chulin, the Khan told him that either he’d have to marry Chulin or else he’d be executed and so would the baby. So he said he’d marry her, but she told him point-blank that he could never hurt the child and so he accepted the situation and raised the child.
I believe that Gulsabiwu did make a promise at some point that he’d keep the paternity a secret, but you’re right, puppy, the whole thing really does go on for quite some time. Anyway, that’s the deal.

Hi, puppy! Welcome to the board! A word of advice: when you start a new thread, it helps other posters if you are more descriptive in your title, like "Episode 35[?-my random number], Chulin's secret" (or "PA viewers: Chulin/Biwu") but not TOO descriptive--something that doesn't give away the plot points to those who haven't seen it yet. Then people can read the title and decide whether or not they want to open it. Have you been watching long? I think it's great fun! One of these days maybe I'll learn a few more actors' names. I mostly skip those discussions because I don't know who they are and don't have time to look them up in Korean Wiz.

Totally forgot about the attendant but now I do remember her and Biwu speaking about something although I thought that was as he was leaving Xue Rengui not before. Sooo much and all of it, well, most of it , soo good. I've been reading K-drama fan boards for about a year. They're all decent and very committed to the stories but this one seems better. The comments and discussions carry weight and it's run smoothly. I'll label better in future, ginnycat! BTW, what's Korean Wiz? (See how new I am?)

Actually, "koreanwiz" is a person. That's what she calls herself AND her website. LOL. Bo Yeah, and she lives in Hawaii, so she gets to see some shows that we don't. You can look things up by drama, then by actor. They sure tell a lot of information about some actors - height, weight, what college they went to. Fun to read up on your favorites.

I have actually printed out the information pages on dramas that I watch, and it makes it easier to keep the names straight. In order to keep names and faces straight, I also printed out those sheets about the actors. Can you tell that since I've retired I have too much time on my hands? ??

Printing out the info is a wonderful idea, Teacher. I'm retired too, the perfect time of life for getting into K-drama, I think. I don't know how the young addicts with jobs and kids and school keep up with all the characters and plots. We only get two shows here in NE PA: DaeJo Young and Likable or Not and I've followed about 3 or 4 others in the past two years, some better than others. I don't know why I'm so hooked. It's not like they're great art or anything, but I never miss if I can help it.

Keep us all posted on how to enhance our viewing

Funny you should mention learning Korean, Kathleen 34. I just ordered a free demo CD from Rosetta Stone. They say they do Korean. Mmmm...We'll see.

I have heard good things about Rosetta Stone. Let us know how the demo is and if it encourages you to purchase the class.
