It wasn’t a case of him overhearing. Chulin’s attendant (darn it, I can never remember that woman’s name) took Gulsabiwu aside when he was in the Tang camp—and about to leave—that the baby was DJY’s and that he shouldn’t leave until Chulin was strong enough to go with him. The attendant is a Goguryean woman, and as I recall, she desperately did not want DJY’s baby to be killed. At first Gulsabiwu tried to talk Chulin into escaping with him, but that didn’t work so he decided to stay and even swore allegiance to Xue Rengui just so he could keep watch over his blood-brother's baby.As for Kaigu, he did indeed want the baby killed because he feared it would grow up to take revenge on Khitan for its father’s death (DJY was believed dead at the time). But after Kaigu stepped forward in front of the Khan and took responsibility for impregnating Chulin, the Khan told him that either he’d have to marry Chulin or else he’d be executed and so would the baby. So he said he’d marry her, but she told him point-blank that he could never hurt the child and so he accepted the situation and raised the child.
I believe that Gulsabiwu did make a promise at some point that he’d keep the paternity a secret, but you’re right, puppy, the whole thing really does go on for quite some time. Anyway, that’s the deal.
Biwu's intentions went far beyond that. It was intention to take the child away once Chulin returned to Yingzhou since he felt that it was his responsibility being the sworn brother of DJY.....Biwu certainly didn't want DJY's son being raised as a Khitan. But Chulin wouldn't have any of that and told him that SHE would be the one to raise the child and be responsible for him.
