:)Hi Everybody,
I'm new here and I'm enjoying reading ALL your messages. However, could you please proofread your messages. I will try to do the same. I'm having a hard time with the names and abbreviations. Sorry, no offense intended.

;D Welcome to our board! The abbreviations will vary from topic to topic except for a few like these: MIL = mother-in=law; DIL = daughter-in-law; SIL = sister-in-law, etc. Character names are usually abbreviated by using the initials - Dae Jo Young - DJY. After you have read a few more of the threads, I am sure you will become accustomed to our way of abbreviating various titles and character names. We also may have a "pet name" for some of the characters, usually describing that particular character's actions and/or way of talking, being, looking, etc in a particular show. I hope this helps you to understand our board a bit better. For the most part, we do not use all that text-message shorthand; most of us prefer to use the English language to describe our thoughts. But sometimes, a person will get a bit lazy and go 4 the simplistic abbreviations - like C U LTR. LOL -

Hopefully you guys find the list helpful! Those are the abbreviations I use when I do the summaries for our site. Abbreviations used here may be different. I find it helpful to aid in the understanding of the reader to post this list before each episode summary. Episode summaries (for Dae Jo Young) can be found here: forum.koreandramas.net/forum_92.html

We're sorry to hear that, shekere. Yes, our abbreviations can be confusing, as well as some of our nicknames (e.g. FeatherDuster for Xue Rengui, because of that feathery-object he used to carry around). But fear not...after you've read the boards awhile, abbreviations like DJY (Dae Joyoung), DJS (Dae Jungsang, DJY's father), and YGM (Yeon Gaesoman) will no longer be so intimidating. BTW, nice abbreviation list, phila.

I have to say that if I were shekeremaker, that list from mtlandis's board (that's Phillie, isn't it?) would be a little intimidating. I think we're more casual here. On our board, we're more in line with what Soapygrams said--we have some common abbreviations & acronyms that run across the board for all shows, like DIL and MIL, and also, we use acronyms for titles of specific shows (DJY - Dae Jo Young, OMR - One Million Roses). Finally, on the separate boards, we fall into nicknames and acronyms for common characters, like "featherduster" (that's cute) or "monkeyman" on AOW (Age of Warriors). But there usually aren't enough of such things that you can't get used to them or would require a key. The thing is, shekeremaker, you can always say, "Hey. Who the heck is WBL?" No worries. If someone wants to use abbreviations etc., they ought to be ready to translate (with good grace) for the uninitiated. And if one uses too many of them, well, probably a lot of people won't want to respond to those posts. So it evens out. However, I think your second point, that people should proofread, is well taken. I will use this opportunity to lecture. We don't need to be letter perfect (except for the AR people--I won't translate, LOL--such as myself), but at least read over your post once to be sure it makes sense, and also, that you aren't flaming anyone. Finally, if you post a link, please try it to make sure it works. If you can't make it work and you know all the characters are there, say so, and a moderator can usually repair the link for you. Bo

On our board, we're more in line Yes our board is based in Philly. (It is a Y not IE ;D). The list of abbreviations does look intimidating taken out of context. However, when you see it all together, it makes sense and becomes rather easy to use. An example, summary for episode 64 (which was shown last Friday here in Philly)..... forum.koreandramas.net/topic_4784.html

Thank you so much for your help everyone. Now I don't have to go running around looking for who DYJ is. Next time I'll know it's just an error.
I was kind of desperate because I don't have anyone to talk about the show with. My friends make fun of me for watching. I'm African-American so it seems weird to them that I'm so interested in these programs. I've been watching one or the other since 2003. I have actually left a dinner party to catch an episode. I know that's a little extreme, but I got hooked...sorry.
I'm glad to have a place to go and discuss, complain, ask questions or get some spoilers when I can't stand the needles and pins. Thanks again for making me feel welcome.

I know how you feel Shekeremaker. No one that I know watches DJY, so this is the only way I have to be able to talk to anyone about the show. Welcome to the group.

(LOL) I'm not saying your way is wrong or too complicated, but rather, that we don't go quite that far here. (But you knew that.) Each board does it their own way. Bo

;D Hi Bo - I'm in your AR group - are we a secret society?? LOL We can't start a secret society--the rule book would be too huge to transport. LOL. ...I was kind of desperate because I don't have anyone to talk about the show with. My friends make fun of me for watching. I'm African-American so it seems weird to them that I'm so interested in these programs. I've been watching one or the other since 2003. I have actually left a dinner party to catch an episode. I know that's a little extreme, but I got hooked...sorry.... I have a similar conversations with my friends, Shekere--I'm white, why am I interested in Korean shows? Do I KNOW someone Korean? I think it's kind of funny. I mean, people make charitable contributions for other races and countries all the time, nobody asks them, oh, is someone in your family a Navaho? Do you know people in that area where the tsunami hit? Is that why you're giving them money? No, sometimes you are just interested in other people, either helping them or getting to know about them. Also, perhaps Americans don't always realize there are huge entertainment industries in non-Western countries that make excellent productions, thank you very much. But occasionally, you can get someone hooked--that's fun. My mother loved Winter Sonata (WS), and she's now watched Palace and Wonderful Life. I think I may send her Samsoon next. I never thought she'd like subtitled/foreign dramas, she's not that sophisticated (I know that sounds snotty but I can't think of a different word for it). But I knew she liked a good yarn with plenty of crying, and I started watching WS with her, so she could ask me questions, and once she was comfortable she just took off on her own. But I digress. Here I am talking about daily dramas in the historical drama crowd. Better scurry. LOL. Bo

Quite right Bo, quite right. I'd just like to add another reason why I watch these shows. First of all, I don't only like the Korean dramas. I'm also interested in French, Italian and any other dramas and movies from other countries. These various countries have different directing, writing and camera styles than American films have and that's a nice change. Foreign filmmakers do tend to take themselves more seriously than SOME American filmmakers, so it does get irritating sometimes, but it keeps things fresh.

Well, Shekeremaker, I'll do you one better. Not only have I given up dinner get-togethers, but I gave up a month in Arizona with my daughters, because they don't get any Korean dramas. I may go during the holidays, but only after visiting Family Video and buying several dramas to take with me.

Shekere and others, if you ever find a video of a full-length cinema release from Korea called (deep breath), "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring" watch it. I saw it at a cinema a couple of years ago. The story moves at a leisurely pace, but I was never bored. What gorgeous scenery, and what a story! Like you folks, I appreciate cinema and TV from all over the world. I once attended a series of movies made in countries all over Africa, and what a great time I had! Only one bad movie in the dozen or so that were chosen. I think all of us here, regardless of our ethnic heritages, appreciate views beyond our own horizons. Seeing how other people approach movie and TV making is fascinating. It is refreshing to see movies made with an eye toward art and message instead of box office receipts. Also, I enjoy seeing, through movies and TV, what is important in other cultures, and how other cultures differ from ours. Sorry for going on and on. Shekere, maybe you could host a DJY party some time. Then your friends might understand what intrigues you.
