No disrespect to the the man himself J.C...but i could not help but notice in some of the episodes that djy continually raised himself from a certain death time and time again..i know it's television but the man seemed indestructable.....almost portraying him like a messiah like figure..anyone else see this?

DJY (as portrayed in this series) is as appealing as any in a Korean historical drama, but pales in comparison to some other real-life characters in history. King Alfred the Great of Wessex comes to mind as someone whose life and exploits were far more impressive, in my view......

The Chinese are proclaiming that DJY was Chinese and that Balhae is part of Chinese history. Did you know that Dae Jo Young is banned in China? I'd like to tell the Chinese people that Dae Jo Young's name is not Dai Zurong(chinese word for DJY) and he is 100% Korean, not Chinese.

i'm personally annoyed at how Dae Jo Young has risen ABOVE his father in this movement.
In real history, there are a couple of tragic deaths earlier that would propel Dae Jo Young to a leadership status, but i guess, like Xue Rengui, it's hard to kill a really good character, even if it happened in REAL life!

It’s interesting that this thread came back up, because I think there absolutely have been some subtle Christ references, and not just his rising up. Back when DJY was caught by Li Wen and brought to Tang, remember when he was strung up on a pole for six days? It was bungalowdweller who pointed out that the whole thing had a crucifixion feel to it, right down to the one companion strung up on his right and another on his left. (I think it was Heuk Sedol and Mapae.) And then just recently, when Gulsabiwu was tending to Geumlan’s ankle, did anybody else catch the comment that DJY washes his men’s feet sometimes? I wish I could remember exactly what Gulsabiwu said about that. I didn’t even give it a second thought until I saw this thread, but now it seems obvious why that was thrown in there. Maybe there are even other things that we haven’t caught. But yeah, pabomandu, I do see what you’re talking about.

I agree. I had written a little about it in the spoiler thread for the east coast (page 3). Since we are behind you in episodes, I haven't heard about the foot washing yet. I know there have been other things I've noticed, but since nobody else commented (east coast) I felt they didn't notice, didn't care or thought I was out there. I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

Several historical dramas have some biblical feel to them. Emperor Wang Guhn, i thought, had an element of King Saul & David to them (re: wang Guhn & Goongyae).
there's a significant actively Christian population in Korea, probably more so per capita than the US (certainly in terms of missionaries), so i can see spilling over in other parts of the culture.
p.s. i also thought about the Gospels with the foot washing scene -- good catch, ajk.

The really interesting question about all this is what the viewers think of it—do they like seeing DJY portrayed this way? Personally I think it’s a little silly, not because it offends me as a Christian (it doesn’t) but because it just seems so unnecessary. I mean, the guy had such a remarkable life and accomplished so much, why would anybody feel the need to embellish it all and suggest he was more than human? But that’s just me; maybe most people like it. I’d be interested to know everyone else’s reactions to it.

I agree ajk. I didn't take offense either, but did think it was unnecessary and ridiculous as well. To me it really stood out that they were portraying him as Christ (Messiah). Why, I don't understand. What's wrong with showing his life as it did happen and what he achieved, without giving him divine attributes?

I don't think it is meant to portray DJY or as some one said, Mimosa (!) as the Messiah. I don't know how to explain this clearly so please bear with me. Ancient medical knowledge is actually more advanced that today. It has to do a lot with internal qi and balancing your yin and yang. There are today even healers who can do what Mimosa did for DJY. A friend of mine was badly hurt in a motor accident. After MONTHS of intense qi healing by a chinese medical doctor, he was able to walk with crutches, then with a walking stick. Now two years later, he is still continuing with treatment and walks with a limp.
No-one in Korea who saw the show thought of the connection to the Messiah. And there are now more Christians than Buddhists in Korea!
