i was womdering,.. do you possibly kknow the name of the actor that plays the Sado division navy commander Kim Wan? he is my most favorite guy on the show. Yi being number two- if you know, i'd really appreciate it. OK, florel already told you that the actor's name is Park Cheol-min. (박철민) He is a famous stage actor, but nowadays is often seen on TV and movie screen. Here are some pictures of Kim Wan. I love Kim Wan's funny facial expression. At first, he tried to ingratiate himself with his superior (YSS). But YSS was proof against flattery. Kim Wan was scolded a lot of times. He always looks so funny, but... Inside his mind, he has a guilty feeling for killing innocent nomads to obey his chief's order. Jung Wun, the captain of Nokdo, seems to be his best friend. In recent episodes, Ippu Yi Sun-shin has become his best friend. ;D He is known as "Kim Wan Potter" in Korea. ;D In real history, Kim Wan was a good hawker. In the battle of Hansan (ep. 73) His smile looks so sad to me. (from ep. 90) From his latest movie "Blood Rain"

These are wonderful pictures and capture the richness of expression this actor brings to the character of Kim Wan. My kid loves Kim Wan and he certainly brings comic relief to YSS. In the latest episode (Chicago) his love and respect for his fellow officer (Mr. Geography,I forgot his name!)leads him to put himself in danger. What a rich, engaging performance!

Great pica as always choko. I wondered what the connection Kim Wan has to (Mr. Geography) Magistrate / Commander Uh? He seems to have some history with him in the series.

Chigirl- Kim Wan and the Map-man (my name for Uh Young Dam) do have a past together. I believe the two were working for the same admiral/commander (I don't know if the two were of equal rank or not) and they were ordered to execute a bunch of innocent nomads (probably for no reason). Map-man refused and he either quit or was fired for disobeying command. That's why he lives on the island with the nomads and knows so much about the ocean. Kim Wan, on the other hand, didn't want to disobey orders and executed the nomads, knowing they were innocent. That's why when Map-man comes to the base to help his daughter/fellow nomads, he looks at Kim Wan and says something like, "Is it you again? Do you still capture innocent people just because they are nomads?" I'm pretty sure I'm right but it has been a while since I've watched that part so people... feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah, princess, that was the set up. Also, when Map-man ( ) returns to the base after Kim Wan begs him because "they're not like me" (they're better men), Map-man tells YSS to tell Kim Wan he has forgiven him for following orders like he did. Bo

His character has certainly redeemed himself since he tried to buy off YSS with all those lovely ladies during that first inspection tour!

It's interesting to see that other posters see Kim Wan as comic relief My spouse can't stand the character ... it's one of the reasons he stopped watching the show. Well, that and episode after episode full of nothing but backstabbing Mouseketeers in the royal court.

i totally appreciate you fine work on the message boards.
i actually won an empty picture frame KBS clock prize at a YiSoonShin acting contest and have now put the image of Kim Wan screaming w/ clenched fist as he entered into the bay trap/lure with ol' goat Mr. "ocean encyclopedia" UhYoungDam...
i will now be on the look-out for movies with ParkChoelMin, my second favorite korean actor, following ChoiMinSik of coarse....

This is the portrait of real Kim Wan. If you ask me, they don't really look alike, but hey, he acts so well. He's like a friendly neighbour or uncle. I liked him in Bomnal (Spring days), where he acted as an island ferry captain. He looks like he would be perfect a country farmer, and it's not in a bad sense that I say that.
