You can name as many as you want and a brief comment would be nice too (I regard Jan Geum and Min Jung Ho as Key players. So they are excluded from the list of supporting players. From the supporting cast, I like the following characters: 1. Mr. Kang - the beloved uncle of Jan Geum whos out there to make her smile in spite of all the hardships. His thoughtful gesture of bringing JG to the beach and when he prayed in front of the sauce jars made me love this uncle. 2. Dr. Shin(Physician/Professor Shin) - I love this guy. No matter how firm and strict he is, this guy has principles. I remembered him when he failed all his students and when he got fired as Empress Dowager's main doctor, he still forced his way to give the medicine. 3. The Queen - Without her, will Jan Geum survive in the palace? Beautiful royalty and wise, I love to watch her. 4. Lady Han - the mentor. A disciplinarian with a good heart. We all love her. 5. Jang Duk - The female doctor from Jeju. The lady got brains and guts to punch a man. Shes very straightforward and I love it when she confronts Mrs. Kang. 6. Physician Jung Woon - herb garden supervisor turned Royal Physician. Jang Geum believed in this guy regarding the bee acupuncture treatment and she got cured. I thought I wont see him again after the herbal garden incident ( i love the scene when he was drunk and being investigated). Who knows he will be back in the palace but he didn't shine at the royal hospital. I like him during the herbal farm episodes. I felt bad when he never tell JG about the medicine lady exam 7. Lady Jung - The supposedly puppet but the Chois were disappointed when she turned out to be a very principled lady. Tough and loving. Never thought she could managed to be the top kitchen madam for 10 years. There are so many more characters I like. But so far they are the ones that I remember very well

Hmm! this is a tough one. Firstly, there are several but I will narrow it down to the following: 1. Lady Han, who started to look after JG soon after she entered the Palace until she passed away. The relationship between these two characters is unique; one could say both Lady Han and JG "grew up" together. Lots of flash backs here . 2. Jang Duk (Uncle) - he is always there when JG needs help or support. He was even prepared to use the family savings to rescue JG when she was exiled to Jeju island. I am not too sure about Mrs Jang (Aunty)..she is always after money! For instance, when JG mum asked for information, again she asked for money when Lady Han asked Jang Duk to find out how Madam Jung is doing after she was sent to the quarantine residence. 3. Professor Shin of course...now you know why I have selected him to be my avatar ;D A highly principled man, he admitted his error for causing the death of a patient and is determined not let any of his students especially JG to be like what he was. To me, the most memorable things he said to JG was, "An intelligent person doesn't necessary makes a good doctor, and you must not let your pride hinder your judgement. Also, he said, the root character of a person doesn't change overnight" Professor Shin said all these things not to discourage her but to put her on the right track because he had to make sure JG is guided so as to realise her potential as an excellent doctor. 4. Doctor Jang Woon (Farm) and The Lady Doctor from Jeju. Both saw JG having the potential of becoming a great doctor and encouraged and helped her. 5. Lastly, I have to mention Sir Min. I mention him last because obviously he was a key character in this drama but he is simply too perfect. All the charcaters I have mentioned above had their problems. I know, there are others...I think I leave them for others to write about ;D Great thread Hanbook, it has made me think about this wonderful drama again ukfan

Supporting characters ...... will be anybody except Jan Geum and Min Jung Ho (key players). Its a fact that everybody loves our Royal Vice Qi-Yu Min JH just by observing his busy thread ;D. I just wish to bring out the other characters that deserved to be mentioned. UKFan, thanks for the compliment. We both agree that Prof. Shin is the best!!!! ;D

oooo ok. well then I would pick Yeon Sang. Although she was gullible and not much of a help, she was JG's best friend and helped her when she needed to talk with the king. Plus, she's sooo cute too

Lady Han.
I have the box set of DVDs that recognise JG, Sir Min, Keum Young and the King as main characters. Had I a choice I would put Lady Han and Lady Choi among them too.

I liked Keum Young and Lady Choi. I know it sounds awful, but I just like their situation in the story. especially keum young, who was not categorized as good or evil, since she tried so hard to be good like JG.

According to the Dae Jang Geum page in Wikipedia.org, aside from Jang Geum and Min Jung Ho, also listed as key characters were Geum-Young and King Jungjong, so they're excluded in my list. For the supporting cast, my nominees are... : 1. The Sang-Goongs, notably Lady Han, Lady Choi and Lady Jung. - They were a major influence in Jang-Geum's life, one way or the other. If one thinks about it carefully, without Lady Choi and her clan's manipulations, Jang-Geum wouldn't have emerged as the heroine right? 2. Gang Duk-gu, Jang Geum's uncle. - Many of us love him. And from what I saw in the series, he loves Jang-Geum more than his wife does. Heehee. While his wife saw Jang-Geum's potential for making them wealthy, Duk-Gu saw just how precocious she was as a child and her abilities and talents early on. 3. Jang-Duk, the female doctor from Jeju - She's one of the strongest women characters in the series and became a major influence in Jang-Geum's life, much like Lady Han. Her constant encouragement for Jang-Geum to become the King's personal physician, to become a physician [even if only to exact revenge] and her firm belief that women were meant for much, much more in life than just cooking and childbearing are still very much applicable in today's times. 4. The Doctors Jung and Shin - for recognizing Jang-Geum's potential even when their own positions and status were threatened by Jang-Geum's remarkable abilities.

My favourites are...
1. Lady Choi!!! OMG Gyeon Mi-ri rocks! I don't know why she has this thing that makes me love and hate her at the same time... She's so scheming and evil but still has got that teeny-weeny good in her? Another thing is that I think she has got good brains too, very sharp in connecting the present to the past... ahh the rolling of eyes. HAHA
2. Jang Duk: She was able to overcome her hatred for her enemy and heal him.. She's really very strong... And I also loved the 2 short conversations between her and Mrs Kang... LOL they were soo comical =D
3. Mr and Mrs Kang: Though a money-oriented couple, they're still very kind-hearted... They added that spice of humour into DJG which no other actors would have been able to... HAHA I just loved it when Mrs Kang started doing that arm-dance-thing when Mr Kang told her that Lady Choi and Geum-Young were put into prison if I remember correctly... hurhur
4. Lady Han and Lady Jung: The 2 most upright and straight people in the palace. I like them because they held ever so tightly to their firm beliefs and being so motherly to Jang Geum and Yeong-Saeng... It was really heart wrenching when they had to go... Why does all good things just have to end? oh gawd life seriously bombs...
5. Doctor Shin: He upholds his morals high. A funny guy... It's like the only time he smiled was when after the ceremony Jang Geum came and hugged the doll? and when he took it back, he smiled. But it was like a half grin. ;]
THEY ROCK!!!
GOSH, the more I come into this forum, the more I get addicted to DJG.. Is it a good or bad thing? hahahaz

I have a comment. I see that you all are referring to Kang Duk-gu and his wife (the vintner) as "uncle" and "aunt"--even though they are not related to Jang-geum in any way. In fact, in the translation I have, they are called her foster parents and refer to themselves this way. There is a scene where Mrs Kang (or whatever her name actually is) tells Lady Choi that Jang-geum is her sister's daughter, but this is a lie she tells to protect Jang-geum. Also, Jang-geum calls the foster mother "ajumma" (older lady) and the foster father "ajussi" (older man), so she's not really calling them uncle and aunt. Is this because of translations used in your respective countries? Is it common to call foster parents "aunt" and "uncle" where you'all are?
Always questing for knowledge. Oh, and these two are definitely the most important supporting characters, I think.
