Who's you favourite supporting character in DJG?

Well if I can't vote for Royal Vice Qi-Yu Min JH (I like the sound of that), then I'd go with Geum Young. And if she's also considered a major character then I'd have to go with the lady doctor. I like her spunk.

Referring to Bo'w question regarding Uncle and Aunt:


Normally, in our side(Singapore). For strangers, we call any elderly man as "Uncle" and any elderly lady as "Auntie". So, they could be a cab driver or bus driver, storekeepers or anybody in the neighbourhood, we use that term as a sign of respect for sombody older than us.

For foster parents, if there is a formal adoption then Mother and Father would be more appropriate.

But in the case of Jan geum, its most likely to use also "uncle" and "Aunt" as sign of close ties and respect too.

Thank you, Hanbok! That's just the sort of thing I suspected was true. I also have a copy of "Rosy Life" that was translated to English from the Hong Kong edition, and the characters use "uncle" for ajussi/older man and "aunt" for ajumma/older lady, which startled me at first.

I love learning things like this. In many European languages, people use "mother" "father" "grandfather" and "grandmother" similarly to how you use "aunt" and "uncle." Unfortunately, in America, if you use such terms you merely insult the person you are speaking to, because it sounds like you think they are old. Which Americans hate. Because we are foolish that way. LOL.

Here, we can say "Sir" and "Ma'am" to indicate respect, but women many times dislike "Ma'am" for the same reason they would dislike "Mother"--so it's difficult. Very few men seem to reject "Sir" but there are always those who cannot accept respect in any form.

Actually, when YMK visited china last year, she was called as the "second leading actress" in DJG, so if so, I would chose Lady Jung

and my copy of DJG does use 'aunt' and uncle' in Chinese when JG talks to the adopted parents. As is the case with hanbok in Singapore, this is the norm for Chinese addressing friends or relations that are older.

I agree with maedayeve and ukfan. I have been reading the backs of DVD boxes and summaries of the drama and wondering why in the world there is no mention of Lady Han in Jang Geum's life. Her presence is so strong throughout the drama. Without her Jang Geum would never have been where she is. Without her Jang Geum would not even have been more. I am sure Jang Geum agrees. =)

I don't know if you all have discussed this, but I think you should trace the roots of this whole "culture of beneficial cooking" to Lady Jung, not Lady Han. Lady Jung (the head kitchen lady who had come from the pantry when Lady Choi was "too young" to take over) was Lady Han's mentor, and she certainly had a huge influence on DJG, Lady Han, the court, the king, and even young Choi Keum-young. In fact, I don't think Keum-young would have fought her family's tendencies at all if it weren't for the years of influence under Lady Jung. (I doubt she would agree, LOL.)

hahahah... ukfan is undeniably a HUUUUUGE fan of YMK!!! heheheh.. well, i am too!!! but it's quite unfair for lee young ae when we single out YMK to be the "leading character" of DJG... i think it's enough for us to give credit to her character in shaping the plot of the story....coz we know how much effort LYA has given to the movie...especially during the time they were in Jeju... my god!!! she was really a professional having gone through all those scenes in that place... BRRRRR!!!!
