If the MERS situation should get worse instead of better, here's a link to a site that has current information on diseases singtomeohmuse.com/viewforum.php?f=1 The site was started in response to worry that Avian flu would cause a pandemic here, well no, world-wide pandemic actually was feared; it's been posting information on news about flu and other diseases, care for family members at home, how to prepare for food or water shortages, etc. for almost 10 years now.
Well, it's official... the Korea trip is off. It's been decided for a while but I wasn't in the mood to admit it. My uncles in Korea and my dad were against the trip so there was no way I could go against their wishes. We're planning for next summer. Looking at the bright side, I have a whole year to get ready and to look forward to it.
(Good news, we got the full refund on the plane tickets.)
So sorry to hear that your trip has been cancelled, I was so looking forward to you sharing your pictures with us. I guess we will just have to go back to eating and discussing korean food instead......
Soooo glad to see your post! I was afraid you had jumped the whole Korean drama thing since it might have reminded you too much of your trip--- I have finshed "My Love From Another Star", so let's get back to agreeing to diagreeing about "Heart to Heart"! I think I left off at Ep 13..... if I remember correctly there were some exciting changes, so I am eager to hear your take..........
Can someone (Ajk??) give me the link to Dong Yi thread pretty please? Started it and want to read along as I go if we have one (I think I've come across it before - tried to find it myself but no luck). Am on epi 8 and really enjoying it so far.
Thank you, Ajk. I'm afraid to read much of this cuz it looks like lots of possible spoilers. Will read after I'm done with "Dong Yi." I just finished epi 13 and I have to say I'm enjoying it much better than "Yi San." I like the main girl much better and the story line is much more fun to me. "Dong Yi" has fewer annoying characters than "Yi San," I feel. I liked "Yi San" lots too but so far I like this one better.
I finished Dong Yi!! I really enjoyed episodes 50 to 59, but thought the last episode was totally not needed. Wow what an awesome girl Dong Yi was, loved how she overcame all the palace intrigues and protected the people she loved. The drama could've been so much better though if it was shorter. If people just talked without all those pauses, if people just answered promptly to questions asked instead of all the hesitation, they could've shortened the whole drama by like 10 episodes, I swear. Drove me nuts. And all those minor characters over-acting!! I didn't love the king either, I don't think he's a good actor either. He really over-acts often. But loved the Dong Yi girl, she's so beautiful and a great actress. Overall glad I stuck with it.
Random Question, thought, opinion......please I am watching a Korean "Historical" (not sure how much is fact/fiction) called "The King and I", there is a lot in the movie about eunuchs. I guess I never gave it much thought, but the details about what makes one a eunuch is enough to make one shudder. So my question(s) is/are: Why would one go thru such pain? Would it really improve their status in life that much? One person in the movie says he is a noble but still wants to be a eunuch-- wouldn't a noble have enough status to not want to do this? Then they are told to save their body parts because they will need them in their next life, so they carry them in a jar?!?!? I guess I always thought this was something someone was forced to do, but to make this decision as a youngster, to do this because it is what your family wants, to do it tied to a chair with nothing to stop the pain-- I can't even imagine.I did find some information online, but still would like to to hear other thoughts and opinions.......thanks
I was surprised by what it says; I always figured it was decided by the family at a young age. Apparently not. Down towards the end of the paper's section on Korea it says that eunuchs could adopt children as long as the boys were castrated and became eunuchs...which kept a steady supply coming. And the adopted kids would inherit the father's estate, which isn't a bad deal for an orphan.
However it happened, once it was done you could definitely improve your status by working for the government, if you got a good job. And apparently being a eunuch significantly increased your lifespan as well, believe it or not:
Thanks for the information, it is always good to hear another opinion. Although they don't show any details as soon as someone brings out their tiny knife, I hit the fast forward button-- I just can't imagine it (or maybe that's my problem, my imagination!) On another note, I was reading the newspaper this week and there was a article about female circumcision-- which sounds similar to this, I knew this still happened in this day and age in some countries, but I still can't imagine the pain they must go through. The series I am watching reminds me of Emperor of the Sea as this series took many episodes to get all the main charactors into the place and now the "fun begins", so hopefully it will be the same with EOTS.....
