I cried and cried and cried... during the episode 4. When he put off his armor, I lost my word. Oh my god.... He decided to commit suicide! His teary eyes made me weep loudly. A totally new interpretation about Admiral Yi. I got hooked on it. I will watch the next episode.

wow you guys episode 3 certainly does not disappoint. more tears on the way. i had to cover my eyes at certain parts hi VIB of YSS....how do you like my 'guest' name? i am trying it out because i just might have to make the change from 'luvarchfiend' to 'luvyisoonshin'....says alot about our admiral doesn't it? ep 3 did indeed not disappoint. i cried too and also had to cover my eyes at times. the one thing that sticks with me, and credit the actor for this (but i believe it was true of the admiral as well) is that haunted look in his eyes. it reflects the conflict of love for country and love for his men, and the horrific burden of the choices he has to make. only a man of great strength and character could carry this burden with such equanimity. he has won my deepest admiration and respect. can't wait to see ep 104. and just so you know, i am reading this thread, and all threads regarding this series and this incredible man.

heya!
oh migod i can't wait to see what you think of episode 4.
yes his eyes do look worn and haunted. i think they put makeup under his eyes to make him look older too
but i think they did such a good job of portraying him as the tortured soul.
young nam, his big burly officer is really starting to grow on me. i love how open and warm his heart is
nahl bahl is pretty cool too

oops...i meant episode 4, not 104.....i hope there are at least 104 and i plan on enjoying each and everyone. tortured soul is a very good description. i also like young nam and nahl bahl....nahl bahl is very choi bu like (except choi bu has less messy hair )....but is that very loyal, very capable strong, silent type. i am not sure but i think the guy who played che won is one of his men....could be that i have just seen that face so much it is my imagination....also maybe gen noh, one of cch's men. i will have to check it out more.

HOLY CRAP! D*MN! what an episode # 4 is! it was amazing. i haven't cried like that over something i have viewed since the archfiend's death. it was so heart-breaking...when young nam did what he did.....when the admiral did what he did....and then that last scene.....i was so relieved to have the show end there because i don't think i could handle much more in that episode. i am concerned now about the non-korean audience who has not been informed of the history....those who have not had the opportunity to see the posts on this board about this series...i am just not sure that starting at the end like this is such a good idea for them. but, it isn't being made for the non-korean audience....i realize this....and i remember you stating your concern over this as well. but i am hooked. and i am so in awe of the admiral. his anguish just gets to me so much, it is so apparent and pervasive....he has won my heart.

i am glad you watched it!
i am glad that as a non korean that you still like the admiral even though you did not have all the history behind him. now you can see why he is one of our greatest (if not THE greatest) heros. it makes me hopeful that the non korean audience will be taken with him too and understand his difficult position.
and it does seem difficult to start out with the climactic point in his life as one would think it would all go downhill from there, but just as ben kingsley's gandhi started at the end, to watch how his lifed shaped him into the man he became was also moving and fascinating
i am hoping the same is true for yi soon shin
i am just sad that all my favorite characters were the ones that did not survive
ooh, when yuong nam impaled himself - that scream that he gave when he threw wakizaka off, it gave me chills.
and song woon (the guy who went to the camp) when he raised his arms and shouted Chun Seh and died i was so sad. he was so brave.
i also was moved by how yi soon shin's voice broke after he saw that Young Nam was dead, and how his face looked as if he would burst into tears at any minute.
i also thought it was interesting that on shimazu's vessel, there were korean girls that had been kidnapped cringing in the corner.
as for episode 5, i wonder if they will actually show his demise.
one historical inaccuracy that they pulled strictly for the dramatic cutoff. he was not fired upon by a sniper. he was hit by a stray bullet.

i thought i had read in a post by you that the bullet that got him was a stray bullet.
i hope they do not show his demise. i am not ready for that. maybe they will start showing now how he got to this point and then show his demise at the end.
a hero for anyone in any place at any time.

Hmmm I think I should stop watching the VOD...I'm sold on it already and I am positive it will be shown in Hawaii. It's something to look forward to after AOW finishes. Plus the VOD really doesn't give it justice. Definitely an instant classic!
OK maybe ONE more episode...;D

episode 5 is a bit slower than the first 4
naturally as a battle is far more interesting than watching a little boy go through his childhood
some historical setup i guess to create a background for yi sun shin, his friend yu song ryong and won kyoon, the man who would become his archrival. i think they are trying to paint won kyun in a more sympathetic light to make his character more interesting but history records him as being a flat out villain(ous subject haha AOW fans)
i think that very little historial evidence exists to the effect that yi soon shin and won kyoon knew each other, much less were intimate boyhood friends. also, i never recall having read that his father ever had any trouble with the law, and was even granted the posthumous title of duke
something i don't understant, i think yi was of yangban status, yet in these childhood flashbacks we see him dressed not in the colorful clothes of yangban children but in everyday clothes
i guess yi and his friends are kind of like a play army, but here in the show it is won kyun who they call dae jang (general) not yi soon shin (but as a child it was he who was looked up to as a commander)
in any case, an informative episode - slow, but not bad to watch

Even though it wasn't recorded in history, it's quite likely that Yi Soonshin at least spent his childhood with Won Kyoon, if not friends with him. Both spent most of their childhood years in the same neighbourhood in Seoul that was no bigger than a few blocks wide. If they ever played war together, Won Kyoon would've been called Dejang since he was 5 years older than Yi Soonshin I wouldn't blame KBS for taking creative liberty on admiral Yi's childhood tale since the famous story about Yi soonshin being a brave and courageous child is all fiction that was written for elementary school textbooks anyway On an interesting note, Yi Soonshin didn't even learn any martial arts till he was 21 years old.. At that age, most of his future peers were already officers. It is said that he wanted to become a scholar more than a soldier. Because of that, unusually for warriors of his time, admiral Yi was educated in master confucian texts. Whereas his fellow peers did not contiribute to any records or accounts of the war, Admiral Yi wrote several volumes of Diaries of Imjin War(Nanjoong Ilgi) that was recorded everyday meticulously for 7 years. It just goes to show his spirit as a warrior scholar As for the question of Yi Soonshin dressed in commoners' clothes, the answer's pretty simple. His family was poor. Even though his family was of Yangban(Noble/Aristocrat) class, Yi Soonshin's grand father got involved in Kimyohwasa, the event that wiped out many Yangban families who supported Jo Gwang Jo.. His family was fortunate enough to avoid the major punishment that could've wiped out his entire family, but all the wealth and honor of the family was taken away. On top of that, Yi Soonshin's father was completely blocked off from any government positions and was often harrased because of the event that gave his family a traitor's name. I hope that explains some of the oddities in episode 5
