HEADS UP FOR THOSE WHO ARE REGISTERED WITH KBS there are new behind the scenes featurettes with sneak peaks of the most exciting parts - war sequences, executions, sea battles etc even if you don't understand the korean, it is very fun to watch Just got caught up with these new clips on my lunch break. All I can say (again) is, WOW. The special effects editing was particularly interesting to see and also the fight sequence with Admiral Yi and ninja-esque assassins was pretty good. Hope they post the VOD right after broadcast!

Well I just finished watching the first episode, unfortunately I could not get to the 300K stream at all (people in Korea must have been waiting too) but I finally got my foot in the door at 56K. Even at that low quality I can say with confidence that it certainly lives up to the hype. Too bad I can't understand the dialogue, but the action scenes and everything down to the music was superb. Hopefully I can watch it again at 300K, especially the battle scene. The first one ended on a cliffhanger so I can't wait for tomorrow's episode!

A Brief synopsis of the Episode One
In October, 1598, Yi Soon-shin, the Chosun(Korean) Navy commander in chief, was facing the last battle to put an end to the 7-year war.
He hurried to form a coalition forces with Ming(Chinese)'s Army and Navy to attack Japanese general Konishi Yukinaga. Konishi was holding the Yegyo castle in Suncheon, Jeolla province, which is located at the south-west edge of the Korean peninsula.
However, Ming(Chinese) Navy commander Jin Rin refused to go to the front because he thought they didn't have to chase the runaway troops. Admiral Yi threatened Jin Rin with a sword and hurt his pride by saying that he would not recognize Jin Rin as a general any longer. Admiral Yi also pointed out Ming(Chinese) Army commander Yu Jeong promised to attack Konish together, which made Jin Rin decide to join the battle because he was afraid he would be left behind alone in exploits of the war.
Meanwhile, Ming(Chinese) Army commander Yu Jeong was bribed again by Japanese tactician Yoshira who worked for Konish. Yu Jeong betrayed the Chosun-Ming Coalition Navy and did not attack Konish on land. As a result, both Admiral Yi and Jin Rin got to be in jeopardy. (In fact, Yu Jeong warned Jin Rin not to go ahead and to make Yi Soon-shin take the lead, but Jin Rin ingnored his warning)
Konish used Chosun prisoners as a shield and urged Admiral Yi to drop weapons. (I guess they are ceramists, scholars and various artisans kidnapped by Japanese army during the war) The prisoners were killed or comitted suicide one by one, shouting "Kill us, Admiral! Konish is on this ship! You don't have to care about us. Kill us!" Admiral Yi ordered to fire.
Blinded by greedy, Jin Rin chased Japanese Navy recklessly and was caught in a trap. Admiral Yi decided to rescue him. As a result, he lost about 130 soldiers. After the battle, Admiral Yi was shedding tears alone. At that moment, several Ninjas Konishi has sent try to kill Admiral Yi.

so some add ons for choko's already excellent summary in novel form for your following pleasure:
Yoo Do (island) October, 1958
A full moon filled the night sky over Yoo Do as its clear light sparkled over the calm waters of the ocean. A piece of driftwood bobbed peacefully on the waves. On the shore, the soldiers, busy with preparations for the next day, were unable to see a hand emerge from the dark water, followed by two more hands. Three heads then surfaced and looked towards the brightly lit port of Yoo Do. Silently, the men exchanged glances, nodded and quietly retreated beneath the water.
At the harbor, chosun sailors in their distinctive blue uniforms bearing the character for "water" were hurrying to move provisions and weapons in preparation for the next day's battle. The three strangers, now similarly attired, were also on the shore. They turned suddenly at the shouting behind them.
"Hey!! You there!!! What are you doing just standing there - get a move on!" a general began shouting at several nearby sailors. As they scurried to obey his orders, his eyes fell on the three men who were staring at him mutely. "What are you waiting for? Get moving!!" They hurriedly picked up a cannon barrel and some sacks and made a show of looking busy until the general was out of sight.
they pretended to do as he asked and then snuck away to a room where soldiers and commanders were gathered. they peek into a conference room just in time to see admiral yi thrust his sword under the neck of the chinese commanding admiral chen lien. his argument with the ming commander was that he refused to go to the front as he thought it was unnecessary. the admiral vowed that if he would not obey the ordes that he would not recognize him as a general. this argument continued until yi lowered his sword first, under the persuasion of kwon jun and the older hwang se tuk. the three men watched as the ming entourage left the room. kwon jun asked the admiral if he thought the situation would be alright.
we then see the three men in chosun uniform report to a japanese man holding a fan. the man is konishi yukinaga, head of the japanese fleet and the three men are japanese spies masquerading as chosun sailors. yukinaga orders his aid yoshida (the little bald dude) to bribe the ming leaders in order to assure victory, confident that they would capture admiral yi and his flagship.
we then see yi discussing war strategies with his aides and the ming commander nursing the wound on his neck as well as his injured pride. he is determined to show up yi sun shin and prove he ming empire's might.
at the chosun naval camp, while the chosun sailors are training, yi sun shin sits alone in his office, his commanders sword on his desk. unsheathing the blade he reads the poem he carved on it. he reached for a cup holding many wooden sticks. taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and prayed for victory. then he looked at the stick hoping to see what his fortune was. i am not sure what it meant but i don;'t think it was good.
the king is shooting arrows with his entourage and i think he is praising admiral yi because yu song ryong (yi's friend) looks happy. there are others at court who do not like the admiral's growing fame and success. example is the two ministers discussing privately after.
we see the chosun army advancing on a japanese garrison on land and yukinaga preparing his troops and he hears the warning of the approaching soldiers.
then we switch to yu jung who is receiving bribes from yoshida who is asking for his aid in gaining japanese advantage

on the chosun ships, we see the naval leaders discussing the receding tide and wondering what the ming navy will do. yi sends a message to chen lien by carrier pigeon and he is told to wait which makes him angry. determined not to be cheated out of glory he orders his ships to attack and gain pride for china, even against the advice of his first officer. overconfident, the order is made for the ming ships to advance
at the japanese garrison, a horn sounded the alarm and a soldier rushed in and bowed hastily in front of yukinaga, informing him that the ming soldiers were not advancing, but merely staging a show of arms.
yukinaga knew this meant that he was free to pursue admiral yi. as the large ming ships drew closer to the shore, yukinaga watched from his flagship. his aids knew that something was amiss because the ming were attacking first. they also knew that they would be moored by the receding tide. realizing this, yukinaga decides to provoke them closer by attacking the ships with cannon. chen lien urges his small fleet onwards. yi watches silently from his pagoda. his aides also note that something is wrong and that the chinese are advancing too early. meanwhile the ming ships are being hammered by the cannonfire from the shore and despite his first officer's plea to retreat. he is told that they cannot retreat back and is knocked to the ground by a shot of cannon fire. yi orders them to attack. his aid yi yong nam (man in grey-white armor and big bushy eyebrows), advises against it saying it will put them at risk but yi orders the attack. they ready to fire on the japanese ships when to their horror they see korean prisoners of war being brought out as human shields. unable to fire on their own countrymen, yi yong nam orders the cannon fuses to be put out, but this causes the now defenseless chosun navy to take many casualties. yi watches silently. one prisoner seeing yi immobilized, said we are already fated to die but we can't let the admiral lose this battle because of us. crying out to the admiral he said, "do not die for us". then others joined and said he is right, you must fight. as each said the same thing the japanese cut them down and threw their bodies over the sides of the boat. Yi watched their floating corpses and ordered yi yong nam to fire but he refused to fire. he said that if he did not obey his order thta he would be the first to be killed. amidst the beating of the war drum, they fired on yukinaga's ship as more and more prisoner's bodies fell into the reddening water. yukinaga, now under heavy fire, falls into the water and is foced to flee. seeing this, yi orders his ships to fire in his direction. climbing into a rescue boat, yukinaga vows to take yi's life.
the ming commander is now cut off and unable to retreat, stranded on the beach. the japanese soldiers began rushing the ships but they are powerless to do anything now. yi knows they are stranded and orders the boats to go after the japanese but yi yong name says they cannot as they have sustained ehavy losses and they might get mored themselves. yi orders a rescue boat under the command of his old, white haired general, hwang se-tuk, loaded with soldiers and sharpshooters to rescue che lien. yi yong nam objects, noting that it was the ming commander's fault that his whole mess had started. when hwang reached chen lien's stranded ship, he cried out for the commander to board the rescue ship as he and his detachment rushed into the thick of the japanese soldiers. the ming soldiers (in yellow uniforms) were killed one by one as chen lien climbed into the boat. the old general, having sustained a shot in the leg, ordered the boat to return to the flagship. and the ming commander felt remorse as he understood that the remaining soldiers would lay down their own lives in order to ensure his escape. though he fought bravely, hwang sustained wound after wound. yi yong nam seeing this, wanted to go back for the old general but the tide had receded too far to send another rescue. as they watched more and more of their soldiers being cut down yi yong nam asked the admiral to send him in a boat to rescue hwang. yi ordered the fleet to turn around, much to the anger of his aide. yi yong nam refused to leave them behind and ordered another ship to go after them but yi struck him with his sword knocking him unconscious. on the shore, the hwang se tuk's officer wept, crying out for the general, as he watched his commander fall after being carved to pieces by the japanese soldiers. watching from his pagoda, yi remained silent and closed his eyes.

Yukinaga paced in front of his soldiers, pissed off. One attempted to ease his worry by saying, "we won! yi ran away." Yukinaga was not comforted. "Is Chosun ours?!" he shouted at his subordinate. "Is admiral Yi Sun Shin dead?" Yukinaga's main concern now was what this would mean for the power struggle between the tokugawas and the toyotomis. Muttering Yi Soon Shin's name under his breath, he vowed to kill admiral yi that night.
as the dead soldiers are carried away on stretchers, the naval leaders look on with sadness. chen lien's first officer arrives indignant with yi, implying that chosun was only okay because of their alliance with the ming. the korena leaders reply, "how dare you say such things when we had to save your @ss! it was your own folly for entering battle in a receding tide." yi yong name and the first officer are about to fight but yi intervenes saying that enough blood has been spilt. they then bring the body of the fallen old general who had led the mission to rescue chen lien. one soldier falls to his knees weeping next to his body, wailing, "hwang se tuk!" yi continues to look on impassively and says something to the effect that lives are lost in battle and not to think to much on it (i think) and then walks off.
in a secluded area, he leans one hand against a tree and reflects on all the death he had seen that day and is overcome with grief. he falls to his knees and begins crying as the faces of his dead general and the slain prisoners of war swim in his mind. watching silently is his swordsman bodyguard. he is about to leave yi to his quiet moment but is stopped by a rustle. both men look up to see two ninja assassins clad in black rushing at them. a third jumps at the admiral with his sword drawn in the air.
end of episode
