JD and Lee In Im stand there talking trash and threatening each other. Enough already, boys. Sheesh.
JD gets back home and learns of Seonggye's resignation, so he heads right to Seonggye's house to confront him. We find Seonggye more relaxed than we've ever seen him; he acts like a huge weight is off his shoulders. And he won't listen to any of JD's protests or arguments. He's headed back to his military camp in Dongbukmyeon and is at peace with that. An angry JD says he's going to get the king to reject the resignation, and storms out of the house...
...and goes right to the king, along with Nam Eun and Yun Sojong. Of course the king's mother is still doing all the talking, and she angrily rebuffs them. When the council next meets, she says, it will all be formalized and done.
So then he goes to Lee Saek and asks for his help. But Saek won't have it. Calls Seonggye "a dangerous figure when it comes to politics" and best serves the country fighting pirates.
Wow, Lee In Im is jumpy. He sees an evening shadow creep past his window, and immediately he grabs his sword and throws open the door...frightening the poor housekeeper so much that she drops the meal she's brought him. JD's threats have gotten into his head, how about that.
Lee Saek and General Byeon have been finalizing personnel appointments and accompany Jo Minsu to report to the king about it. Well guess what, the boy has a request: lift Lee In Im's exile and put him on the council! Lee and Byeon are horrified, but Jo argues that "there isn't anyone else as experienced." The king's mother doesn't order them to do it but says they should "consider his majesty's wishes." Like that's not an order....
Lady Kang is unhappy that her husband will be leaving the capital for more military duty. And he has two young sons now, too...but his mind is made up. JD shows up and tries once again to get him to change his mind. They quickly end up arguing. But Seonggye has lost interest in fighting any longer. "Fight by yourself," he tells JD with a glare, and walks away.
Next, JD calls a scholars' meeting. Even brings in the older Confucian (as opposed to neo-Confucian) scholars to organize opposition to Lee In Im's return. Lee Saek walks in on it and chews JD out for "making trouble while the king is so new." They get angry at each other, to the point where JD stuns everyone by telling Saek he's siding with a traitor and no longer deserves to be called "master." He dismisses the meeting and storms out.
Jo Jun was at the meeting and follows JD outside. "I had some hope," he tells JD, but obviously you'll never accomplish what you want. "It's too bad." And walks away. Really? Jo gave up just like that? Wow.
And if that isn't surprising enough...Jo Jun later goes to Jo Minsu and asks for a job! Brings him a small chest of silver..."to congratulate you. It's not a bribe." Yeah, right. Apparently Minsu knew Jo Jun's father so he knows who Jo Jun is. Jo Jun wants to be the Inspector General, and really sells it: "If you appoint me, the office will be your shield and sword. The wealth I have will find a new owner soon, too." Minsu warms right up to the idea of a loyal flunky as his inspector general, and some more assets in his pocket. Wow what has happened to Jo Jun?
JD walks right into the royal palace plaza, plops a mat down on the ground in front of the king's residence, and kneels. He starts shouting for the king to reject Seonggye's resignation. Tells Yun Sojong and Nam Eun that "this is my gravesite."
Look at this--Bangwon's in a red robe! He got a government job after all. He goes to tell his father, who's very proud....until Bangwon tells him he knows all about "the cause" and starts pushing the idea. Seonggye threatens to punish him if he ever talks about it again, but Bangwon has it in his head that he's going to pursue it even if something happens to JD. But Seonggye has to leave at the moment...
...because outside in a nearby street, we see Choi Yeong. He's in a prisoner's cage and his being transported to his new place of exile. Citizens line the streets, crying, while Choi sits in the cage, stoic and emotionless. Seonggye wanted to see him one last time (but he doesn't approach him or try to get his attention). And as it turns out, we learn that today is the day Seonggye is leaving for his military camp at Dongbukmyeon.
Guards have dragged JD out of the plaza, roughed him up and unceremoniously dumped him on the stone sidewalk. Ouch. But now JM shows up. He was disgusted with JD after that scholars' meeting, but he's decided to support him after all. Even brought his own mat. The two of them go into the plaza, kneel on their mats and protest together now. Seonggye happens to be nearby (not sure why) and sees the pair imploring the king on his behalf.
Lee In Im has gotten word of how everything's gone bad for JD. He's laughing so hard you almost worry for his health. Laughing like crazy.
Seonggye and Jiran and a few soldiers are on their way to their camp. As they rest their horses, Seonggye is staring off into space, thinking about JD and JM out there in that plaza risking their health and careers. JDs words are ringing through his head. So many words, from so many encounters...all the way back to their first meeting. But they don't seem to affect him. "Let's go," he tells Jiran.
JD and Mongju are getting roughed up by the guards. Then from off to the side: "Let go of them." Seonggye! He came back. JD's words changed his mind after all. "Let's fight together," he tells JD as he helps him to his feet.
Now Seonggye is before the king, begging for his job back. Strangely enough, the king's mother isn't arguing with him or chewing him out. She looks disgusted, but she isn't saying no. And later we see him with his robe back on! So she allowed him back.
Jo Jun gets his inspector general job. Jo Minsu gives him his first assignment: "Find an excuse to impeach Lee Seonggye, Jeong Mongju and Jeong Dojeon."
More scholars have joined JD and Mongju in the plaza. They're being read a royal order to disperse. But JD isn't going anywhere, and is oddly confident about a surprise "counterattack" coming. Huh?
The first new council meeting with Jo Minsu in charge. He calls for the inspector general's report. Jo Jun steps up and announces that a high official has stolen land from the government. Specifically, the land seized from Im Gyeongmi and Yeom Heungbang, which was supposed to be turned over to the government. Well who took it? A tense pause as Jo Jun inhales. "Commander Jo Minsu." Doink! Jo Minsu's eyes bug out and he waves his hands. "It's not true!" But too late--the council is going crazy. Jo Jun has a scroll with all the evidence recorded on it, and slams it on the table for everyone to see if they like. Tells Minsu he's going to be interrogated!...and now we see a flashback to what happened after Jo Jun walked away from JD, apparently for good. Turns out, JD sat down with him and spelled out a plan for Jo Jun to ask Jo Minsu to appoint him inspector general. Why should I do it, Jo Jun wants to know. He never did get that answer about what JD wants to accomplish. So JD tells him flat-out, "My cause is to create a new country." Jo agrees to do it on the spot; obviously liked the answer... And now JD, kneeling in the plaza, has a great sly smile on his face, knowing exactly what's going on inside the council hall.
Soldiers have brought Lee In Im from his home, down the street to the village square. Because a royal order has arrived for him to receive. He's got a big smile on his face; assumes this is his call back to the council. But then the commander who brought the order turns around and reveals himself. Seonggye!! What's he doing here? "I am most suitable to be your messenger of death," he says calmly. And wow does In Im look angry.
