“Melody of Love” is the new daily drama, replacing “Tale of Two Sisters” on KBS. Thought I’d give it a shot.
It’s ... well ... kind of “meh” so far. It is (if anything) even more youth oriented than Two Sisters, revolving as it does around an American Idol kind of talent competition.
The lead character is a flakey, self-centered young woman, who is determined to make it big on stage. She is a disappointment for mom and dad (who run a dry cleaning business in a storefront that - shockingly – looks an awful lot like Baker Dad's bakery in Two Sisters). Her older sister is smart and hard working, and she’s become a well-regarded young lawyer.
Her apparent love interest is another young lawyer, who barely made it through law school, and got himself a cushy job in a top-ranked law firm (thanks to his father’s influence).
Now, why did this young man do so poorly in law school? It seems that his only real interest is drama. So, naturally, the flakey drama queen and the young lawyer are made for each other.
I’m not sure I’m going to stick with this one. The currently running SBS daily drama is a turkey (which is partly why I ended up watching “Two Sisters” instead) but it should be ending soon. When it does, perhaps I’ll give the new SBS show a fair shot.
The first episode definitely wasn't anything to write home about. But I liked how the second episode ended. Will definitely be sticking it in longer because this drama is from the same writer as "Moon and Stars for You", the only daily that I really liked since the "Be Strong Geum-soon" days. I really enjoyed how "Moon and Stars for You" went about with the adopted child issue.
It's going to be interesting to see another "villain" similar to Kyung-joo--how she spins everything her way. I'm guessing that could be in the form of older sister, Sulim. Hah, and to think that actress had all the guys falling for her in the TV Novel, "Love, My Love".

Thanks for the early update, mikey. If it shows early signs of being anything special, let us know and maybe I'll take a peek at it. (The first 20 episodes are on YouTube already.) Not ready to watch another one just yet...but the one thing that does interest me is that the actress who played Mrs. Guk is in it. (Ban Hyo Jung)
You'd have to think she'd be the early favorite for the Mrs. Guk MVP Award.
Ah, YAH. She's the best. To me, she's not that great at subtlety, but she's amazing at being the pillar of whatever community, for good or for bad. I love her.
LOL on the Mrs Guk riddle. Can you win the award named after you? I guess you can, since she won it in the first place.
From Dae Jang-geum: Sun-dol: "Are you trying to dry me up and kill me? Why do you say the same things over and over every day? Rather, come and hit me once! Aigu!" But then: Dr. Lazarus: "By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Warvan... You shall be avenged."
Well, I'm still watching. It's not fantastic, but it's not too bad, either
The good news: it's better than "Two Sisters." That's not saying much, but you've got to be grateful for small things nowadays.
The bad news: the lead character is even more annoying that Gieun in "Two Sisters" (though they're seemingly trying to reform her already).
IMPORTANT! It seems that KBS has instituted a time change for "Melody of Love." The late evening broadcast appears unchanged, but the next-day rebroadcast has been shifted from mid-morning to mid-afternoon (I think it starts about 4:45 PM Chicago time, but don't hold me to that).
If you have your timer set to record the morning show (as I did) you'll be in for a disappointment ...
