Mrs. Guk was one of the characters in "The Road Home," the daily drama that KBS aired in 2009. That drama was the first daily I had ever watched regularly (and the only one until Sisters). It was full of people harboring grudges and silly ideas and resentments; I was told it was pretty typical for a daily drama. Mrs. Guk, she was a friend of the main family's grandfather, and she was the only one in the whole show who consistently talked sense. Over and over during the series, I kept thinking, If everybody else would just listen to Mrs. Guk, they'd all be a lot better off. She was the obvious MVP of that series...and so I've named the MVP award in her honor.
In this series there was no wire-to-wire obvious choice. The granddaughter actually was the early leader--yes, the seven-year-old--but then she stumbled, and then disappeared for a long time. For most of the series it was a very close two-person race. But then Baker Dad went bananas over Sara Kim and lost his mind, and so by the last few weeks we had a clear winner left standing. The only character I never smacked once in all of the smack updates:
Not a major character, and like many other characters her part was diminished for the sake of endless Monster Girl and endless not-funny Gieun. And early in the series she was kind of a pain. So much whining--good heavens so much whining. But she did a lot of unpleasant work and cheerfully did all of the housework in the Kim household. And more importantly, she kept coming up with stunning flashes of insight. Again and again and again. I lost count of the times I said "Yeonga's right" or "how did Yeonga figure that out?" Just like with Mrs. Guk, if people had paid more attention to what Yeonga had to say, they'd have been better off.
And Ilyeong is the runner-up. She could be irritating at times, and one time she flat-out snitched on Yerin (yeah it was Yerin but she was still a snitch). But she was a good daughter and sister, always looking out for her dad's and sisters' best interests. Not afraid to say what needed to be said, and you could tell that she had a good soul inside.
So congratulations, Yeonga, and good luck raising both your young daughter and your dweeb husband.
