Some of you may have wondered in last night's ep. where the dress shoes came from that Na-young took out from a box and admired after she returned from her shopping trip. Obviously, they were purchased while she was out shopping wth her new friend. But like me, you may have wondered if they were bought by her friend, or else, why were they significant?
Well, in this morning's rebroadcast, we get a brief flashback scene not seen last night that resolves any mystery. As NY admires her new shoes, she flashes back to where they came from --- she's in the department store with her friend from school and he stops her a moment to look at a pair of high heeled shoes he spots. He tells her they would like nice on her and urges her to try them on. She's resistent at first, but is persuaded when he tells her it can be like Cinderella -- try on the ones right there, and if they fit her, they belong to her (by cosmic right, I guess) and he'll buy them for her. She thinks it over a moment, then agrees to these terms.
We never see her try them on, but it must be that she did and that they fit her...and that she let her companion buy them for her. It's not clear from her facial expression how she feels the dress shoes stack up compared to the sneakers Ki-hoon bought her just because he was thinking of her and wanted to get her something for the Thanksgiving holiday. It's pretty obvious she didn't get him a gift.
I think any single woman (or man) has a right to see more than one person in a dating capacity -- as long as the other people being seen are clear that this is what's going on and that the relationship w/ these people all are very casual. But that's not what's going on here --- Ki-hoon believes them to be engaged. They've been dating almost 5 years and were almost ready to set a wedding date. He's let her know he would not like her to date others, and she has promised she won't. Additionally, she has made it extremely clear that she has a zero tolerance policy of him even looking at another woman in anything more than a perfunctory, non-admiring way. That's either a woman who agrees the relationship is a committed, monogomous one--or a whopping double standard.
Not only that, but she has lead her new friend to believe that she's not involved w/ anyone else in any serious way. She is behaving in a way her entire family would admonish her for and feel really ashamed of her...she is not exhibiting the character we've seen displayed by her brother and sister. She is showing a real weakness of character and real shallowness -- accepting attentions and gifts from an attractive guy while supposedly committed to another just because it's pleasurable to do so.
I've expected for some time that NY would not make it to the wedding vows w/ KH. It looks more and more like break up is in the future for these 2. I feel sad for both of them. I know KH will be deeply hurt, and even though NY is treating the relationship indifferently, we've seen how distraught she's become when she really thought she had lost KH. I can't help but think she'll have real regrets.
p.s./There were no other additional scenes this morning.
