MOE Ep.20 Let’s just plot it out, we won’t worry about cutting it too much.
Jangil embarks on a rampage after his meeting with President Jin, who thinks Jangil is going to save his company. He goes to Sunwoo and calls him out on being a jerk “like your dad” (PJ), and even yells at Jiwon. When she asks what Jangil was saying about Sunwoo’s “dad,” a drunk-and-not-feeling-like-a-victor Sunwoo says he doesn’t know.
PJ, not realizing his danger, hounds Jangil to help him. 49 days after Mr Lee’s death, Sunwoo visits his enemy’s memorial site and finds there a note from Jangil, who is planning something big.
We see a replay of the opening of the drama. In Thailand, Jangil buys a gun. Sunwoo speeds toward PJ’s home and resort there. Jangil breaks in and pulls a gun on PJ, but Sunwoo first stops him from killing PJ, then stands down the gun in his own face, and finally stops Jangil from shooting himself in the head. Fortunately, a bullet goes awry and PJ gets shot in the arm. [Yay.] Sunwoo carries PJ on his back toward the hospital. When PJ asks, “Am I your father?,” Sunwoo replies he is not. PJ cries.
After Mrs PJ leaves him, PJ gets arrested for his crimes. (Yoonjoo, however, remains the faithful daughter. Very touching actually.) While in jail, PJ receives the results of the Sunwoo paternity test from Taejoo, who advises PJ to honor Eunhye and his own son and to stop being a fool.
Jangil gets very sick after this whole experience, and Sunwoo checks him into a mental hospital in Seoul and pays for his treatment. Jangil regresses to his school years, as a vengeful Soomi learns when she visits the hospital. Sunwoo visits frequently and plays along with this. Eventually, Jangil apologizes for everything but can’t quite remember what happened. He does recover after awhile, and Sunwoo and Jangil take a trip to their hometown. They discuss what happened in the past and freely forgive each other at the place where teenage Jangil had attacked Sunwoo. However, Jangil has a relapse and “sees” himself trying to kill Sunwoo. He throws himself into the water to save teenage Sunwoo, and the adult Sunwoo jumps in after andrescues him tries to rescue him, but it seems he is unsuccessful, because later when he's talking to Jiwon (next paragraph), he muses on whether Jangil is "happy now."
Sunwoo is blind again, probably from the trauma, and may not recover his sight, so he tries to dump Jiwon. She is having none of that and tells him to get used to her being around.
Geumjool takes Sunwoo to visit PJ in jail. PJ gets all miffed (he thinks Sunwoo, rudely wearing sunglasses, is there to crow over his downfall), but as he leaves Sunwoo grabs his hand and PJ notices that Sunwoo has his blind-cane. PJ takes off the glasses and spontaneously hugs Sunwoo, who lets him. They both get emotional, and suddenly Sunwoo realizes he can see PJ.
Jiwon waits on her bench in the park. Sunwoo meets her and she realizes he’s not blind. (“Just a little blurry.”) Her joy is clouded by his confession of PJ’s paternity. She is shocked. He doesn’t think of PJ as his father, and hates him, but can’t bear to leave him rot like a nobody. She keeps repeating that she needs some time. So he writes a letter to her, saying he understands that she would stay with him no matter what but would be very unhappy because of his bio-dad being Jin, whom she hates. He won’t ask her to wait for him, and he won’t wait for her either. He's leaving, to go to his mining camp in Indonesia.
So Jiwon is left with a dilemma. She can’t stop hating PJ for ruining her family. She can’t stop loving Sunwoo.
Meanwhile, Soomi cannot stop thinking about Jangil.(It’s not clear whether he again cracked up or whether she’s been visiting him. We don’t get exact info on what happens to Jangil, just that he didn’t die.) (As noted above, it appears that Jangil did die when he jumped into the bay.) She talks with her dad about how life has turned out, and they seem to have settled into a comfortable relationship with each other.
Jiwon spends her days volunteering at the academy for the blind, where she is reminded of Sunwoo at every turn. She reads The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho, which is the book they kept reading to each other. She visits David Kim’s office, where she realizes that she can never forget him, she’s just waiting for his return.
So time has passed, her hair has grown, but dressed like Soomi she flies [on a plane] to find David Kim. Apparently unannounced, because she arrives at his camp, but he’s “gone to the Equator.” She just leaves. Of course, as she is entering the airport, Sunwoo is arriving and they pass each other unknowing. [Picture Bo yelling at the screen, "Really? You're really gonna do THIS?"]
He returns to his camp. He has a drink. He plays a tape of Jiwon singing Moon River and puts her photo on his desk—he carries it with him (so she wouldn’t have seen it). He notices two stuck-on hearts on the frame of the photo of his dad (Kim) and him. [Remember, Jiwon used to do this, presumably he’s seen it before so he thinks nothing of it.] He sits outside, and when Jiwon [!!] walks up behind him, he thinks it’s Sec Koon and complains that he’s working too hard.
Then he realizes. He stands and turns [looking much younger and more vulnerable with dark hair BTW], and they just stare at each other. She asks, you didn’t wait for me, right? “Right.” So I’ll go home then. “Okay. But…can you do that?” No, she can’t. “So just stay here with me forever.” They fly into each other’s arms and kiss and stuff. Then she says, “I’ll read your back” (with her hands, they are hugging). He asks what it says. “It says, ‘I waited for you.’” He laughs and reads her back. “I couldn’t stop loving you. I’ll go anywhere…with you...”
The End.
****
I found these endings of the various stories very satisfying. It was touching that Sunwoo spent so much time with Jangil when he was sick. My only disappointment was that we didn't learn exactly what happened to Jangil, when we did with everyone (EVERYONE) else.
Why did PJ make me cry? Because that's what happened, I started crying when Sunwoo carried him to the hospital, and I pretty much didn't stop crying the whole rest of the episode.
I loved that Yoonjoo still felt that PJ was her dad, and clearly this meant a lot to him. I loved that Soomi and her dad came to an understanding. And I loved what happened with Jiwon and Sunwoo. So with the exception of Jangil, I was very pleased with this episode.
