MOE Ep.8:
Sunwoo starts massaging President Jin, telling his usual lies about the accident, but Sunwoo later connects PJ’s voice with his identity. Over the course of the episode, he obtains a confirmed identification from a hotel maid by getting Geumjool to break into PJ’s house to steal a photo. This has repercussions I’ll discuss below.
Geumjool asks Soomi to look in on Sunwoo's girlfriend and check her out. When she does, surprise! It’s Jangil's crush. She tells Jiwon not to hurt Sunwoo (after assuring her she's not the latter’s girlfriend). Jiwon tells Soomi that Sunwoo said he was "hit in the back of the head," so Soomi asks Sunwoo about this at his place. He tells her he heard others lost their eyesight in this way, so he assumed he did too. He’s working on his police report, and she steals a page. Later, Sunwoo discovers the page is missing, and we see Soomi incorporating the Braille text into a painting.
Jangil has paranoid issues with justice catching up with him. He has a hard time, including nosebleeds, from the stress of school and being an attempted murderer and all. He gets a call from Soomi about some clothes she left at his place and sets up a pickup for her.
PJ and Mr. Kim discuss PJ’s meeting with Sunwoo. PJ lets Kim know he thinks Jangil did this to Sunwoo. Later, PJ receives another blackmailing letter from Mr. Choi, but believes it's from Sunwoo.
Jiwon and Sunwoo have fun going to a movie, and he asks her to help him buy a coat. Unfortunately, Sunwoo accidentally goes into the wrong dressing room and gets attacked by a dirtbag who accuses him of being a professional thief. Jiwon gets into a slugfest with the guy, and then in her defense, Sunwoo goes ape on him with his blindman stick. On the bus on the way home, they are sad together. She ends up kissing him. On the mouth! Awww.
Soomi overhears Mrs PJ and daughter Yoonjo discussing Mom’s new art gallery and need for fresh artists. Soomi artfully drops her paintings in front of them, but they don't even see them. The two lunch with Jangil. Mrs PJ wants Jangil to set Yoonjo up with someone suitable. After Yoonjo storms off, Mom adds she can fix Jangil up with many suitable girls from good families. Marry someone you love, she advises, but choose the one you love from my excellent list! He'll think about it later…
After the hotel maid positively identifies PJ, Sunwoo, fearful for Jiwon’s safety, clumsily breaks up with her. (This after she has given him a photo of herself with an inscription, “I love you, let’s spend our lives together”—which he doesn’t know about.) Her feelings crushed, she tells him he was her first love and reminds him of their first meeting, then leaves. Regretting, he runs after her but runs into Jangil, who can see her walking by but misdirects Sunwoo, takes him home and tells him he knows Jiwon and that she doesn’t need a blind boyfriend. Sunwoo becomes infuriated, says he’ll get his sight and his girl back, and beats Jangil in the face.
Jangil goes home to drink. Soomi arrives, insulted that Jangil purchased some clothing for her. They verbally spar (“We’re so much alike” and “Get the hell out of my life” etc.) and end up having angry sex, but in the morning, Soomi’s feelings are crushed when she hears Jangil muttering “Don’t leave, Jiwon” in his sleep, and she walks out.
Sunwoo tries to meet Jiwon at school, but they miss each other. Jangil follows him a bit that evening, stopping shortly before Sunwoo gets hit by a careless motorcyclist. Sunwoo drags himself home. He thinks someone is in the apartment--“Jangil?”--but really it’s Taejoo and his guy, who remain silent. Sunwoo begs his father to let him forget everything so he can live life happily as a fool, and then starts wrecking his place. Taejoo and his guy grab him before he can really hurt himself. “Who are you?” gasps Sunwoo. “Luke, I am your father.” Oh, wait, Taejoo says, “I am your father. From this point on, I’m going to change your life.”
Comments: For a minute, I thought Mrs PJ might be Soomi’s mother. Wouldn’t that be a kick. Poor Soomi looks pretty sad when she sees their nice clothing and their happy relationship. That’s what made me think of her mom, as Soomi probably was.
On other shows, we've commented on how the fire and police departments are often portrayed as dangerously bumbling fools for story's sake, and I have always found that unlikely. (I can buy graft and corruption, but the gross incompetence shown is over the top.) Similarly here, the treatment of Sunwoo as a blind person is completely negligent and callous, even slightly short of criminal, by society in general. I wonder how much of that I can take as accurate. Are the writers exaggerating for effect, or is this how it is, but so normalized that the writers are completely oblivious to how it looks to us? Most disturbing.
