Just eight episodes? Was hoping for something longer...but these days it's just good to see anybody making any kind of series so I won't complain. Is TVING a big enough service that they might subtitle the series in English? Or big enough that some foreign streamer would possibly be interested in running it? Thanks as usual for keeping us informed, sure do appreciate it. That's usually how long most Korean Netflix series are (ex. Squid Game, Kingdom etc). This isn't a Netflix series, but is being produced by a similar Korean streaming service, which explains the length of the series. Not sure if TVING provides English subtitles. They only cater to Korean audience so they probably don't have English subtitles. Don't expect it to be a KBS-style traditional historical. It'll probably be closer to Kingdom-style production(minus the zombies). The fact that an actress who only plays in theatrical films and Netflix series has been cast as the lead character and the fact that it's being produced by a Korean version of Netflix indicate that it'll be much closer to a Netflix film than a television historical.

MBC Chief Detective 1958 (2024)
Director : Kim Seonghun (Director of 2018 film Rampant)
Writer : Kim Youngshin
Time period : 1958
Synopsis : Prequel of MBC's popular crime investigation drama series "Chief Detective" that ran from 1971 to 1989.
Lee Jaehun(Park Haeyoung in tvN Signal) has been cast as a younger version of Park Younghan, who was the main character of the original series
Funny thing is Choi Buram, the original actor of Park Younghan, was 31 when he first played the character in 1971, but Lee Jaehun is currently 39 years old. Lee looks at least 10 years younger than his age though.
Opening Credits of the original drama

Wongyeong, well no point repeating what everyone knows I'll say about it lol
Yes very unfortunate that they go with that same time period yet again, and so soon after LBKT. So many good stories out there waiting to be told.

Wongyeong, well no point repeating what everyone knows I'll say about it lol Yes very unfortunate that they go with that same time period yet again, and so soon after LBKT. So many good stories out there waiting to be told. You have to understand the fact that not everyone in Korea watched the LBKT drama. Highest rating for that series was about 12%, so that means 88% of Korean population didn't watch that series. Some may have watched it online, of course. KBS traditional historicals like LBKT is also mostly watched by older generation. Younger folks who watch these type of historicals are usually history buffs. Most of the younger generation probably don't even know that last year's LBKT drama even existed. tvN usually does trendy version of historicals that the younger generation likes, so I'm guessing this drama will also be those type of historicals. Actress playing Wongyeong in this drama is someone who was recently on popular Netflix original series The Glory, which was a sensation in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, so it has to be a drama that is meant to lure international viewers as well. With that being said, I don't think I'll be watching this drama as I am more of a traditional historical fan.

It sounds like it could be good or it will be another comedy . Wouldn't be surprised to see someone else from The Glory getting cast in another historical. Seems like everyone wants to ride on the success of that series. Also, notice how both the main characters of the Wongyeong and this Lady Ok drama are women? Women-focused historicals(or historical setting dramas if you don't want to acknowledge these type of dramas as "historicals") seem to be the trend these days, which is understandable because most of the drama viewer audience tend to be women. This explains why traditional historicals that are men-focused aren't very popular.

I remember when similar trend happened back when QSD, IE and Ja Myung Go were airing. I think the news had a term for it.

The current trend is a continuation of the trend that started with QSD and IE, not new. Almost all popular historicals in the last decade have been female-focused dramas. Ex. MBC Empress Ki (2013) KBS King's Affection (2021) - Crossdressed girl as king tvN Mr. Queen(2020) - Male soul getting stuck in queen's body MBC Red Sleeve(2021) - Consort Uibin as main character Aside from few exceptions like SBS Six Flying Dragons and Netflix's Kingdom, almost all popular historicals since the success of QSD had a woman as a main character

Kim Hanmin, the director of the Yi Soon Shin Trilogy Films(Roaring Currents, Hansan, Noryang), apparently wants to create a drama based on Ryu Seongryong's book "Jingbirok," and is currently looking for an online media streaming company that can fund him.
If Netflix takes this, it could be the first Netflix original Korean series to be based on actual history.
(Kingdom is obviously not real history as we all know)
There is also a chance that it could be funded and streamed on Korean platforms like TVING(just like the Queen Woo drama).
The name of this drama will be "Seven Years' War."

Hmmmβ¦.I dunnoβ¦.
What else was said about the matter? Since he said itβs another adaptation of Jinbirok, Iβd imagine that it will focus a lot on the politics, but this guy is primarily an action genre guy and didnβt always follow the source material in his films.

What I posted above is pretty much all info we have for now. I assume it will focus more on action because of him being primarily an action genre guy as you said though. The possibility of getting funded by either Netflix or a Korean equivalent company also increases the likeability of being more focused on action. The reason why television historicals tend be more geared towards politics than action is due to money. He'd probably have at least as much amount of funds as he had for his movie trilogy for this drama series, so it will most likely have more action involved.
