I can't help but feel that the trio led by Yeogu are somewhat inspired by Chuno. One, they're in rags and are fighters, and two, Yeogu speaks in a sarcastic tone just like how Dae-gil does, Bokgu Geom is played by the same actor of General Choi though the similarities end there, and Payoon is probably the closest to being the funny guy. So far my favorite moment with him is when a Malgal soldier urinates on him while he's hiding.
I like this drama so far. Let me first start off with the production. This is one of the reasons why I like historicals. They have great production value that leave a great impression on the viewer. As for the armor, after watching dramas that try to mimic those mmorpg games that those Korean people are obsessed with, it's a breath of fresh air to finally see armor depart from that formula. The armor in Empress Chunchu was just odd to look at, and in Jumong, they come off as flashy.. Oddly enough I don't seem to have as much of a problem with it in Dae Jo Young. It's nice to see armor that actually reflects that time period because it feels like you are in that time period instead of a costume party for MMORPG freaks. Though I have to say, the armor is so obviously leather. Armor was made of iron in those days. Maybe I'm being too nitpicky, because it probably would have been too expensive to actually make them out of metal.
As for the characters. It seems to be funny that newcomers to the historical genre tend to be enjoyable in their roles. Kim Myung-min for example, as Yi Soon Shin. Kam Woo-sung is pretty good as the bitter unwanted prince; he conveys that well through that sarcasm he expresses. King Biryu is pretty good as well. Another thing I like about historicals is the charisma these actors emit. That charisma never gets old, especially with the elderly actors. The tension between Biryu and Yeogu is pretty well done as well. Banishing his son in order to protect antoher son, must be pretty hard on the guy.
So far, only complaint is get a move on, but the same couldbe said with most of these kind of series

For those of you watching online, what site are you using? I'm watching on dramacrazy.net, but it'll still subbed only up through Episode 4. Is there any place with more subbed episodes?

There aren't any. The subbing team for this series has a reputation for being slow. Another place is KBS World, though you have to pay in order to watch

Episode 13 Spoilers: * * * * * * * * * * * * * Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh. Pirates? Looks like the show is heading into Phase II, with a new set of faces, familiar from other shows. We've got Brue from Age of Warriors, the young actor who has made a career out of playing Crown Princes, Mishal's annoying brother (looking a lot less annoying and more menacing in this show), plus a guy clearly being played by an actress. Question is - is she playing a man or is she playing a woman pretending to be a man?
Sure wish we had subs...

Question is - is she playing a man or is she playing a woman pretending to be a man? Sure wish we had subs... They're not pirates. Milshi's annoying brother plays the grandson of the last king of Buyeo, which would make him like the great-great-great grandson of King Geumwa from Jumong. He is trying to revive the Buyeo dynasty. The guy being played by an actress is the younger sister of Mishil's annoying brother. She is a woman pretending to be a man. According to King Geunchogo's official website, she will later become King Geunchogo's second queen and Mishil's annoying brother is going to be one of King Geunchogo's most loyal subject. The actor who played King Mokjong in IE takes part in their Buyeo reviving gang as well. BTW, MBC has cancelled its plan of King Onjo and replaced with a different historical Gyebaek. Gyebaek is arguably the biggest rival of Kim Yushin. If Shilla had Kim Yushin, Baekjae had Gyebaek. Since Gyebaek is the title of the drama, I think Kim Yushin will be portrayed as an evil dude. This drama will air on Spring 2011. This is basically the same time period as QSD.

Kim Yushin as the bad guy? Hard to imagine after watching Queen Seonduk. Speaking of evil ... Episode 14 spoilers . . . . . . . . .
Thanks for the explanation of who the new characters are. It was so nice to see Evil Brother #2 getting pushed around. However, still no match for the priceless Li Wen pinata.
Best Hair Award (so far) goes to the new character with the braids and the feather fan.

One thing i am soooo over this woman pretending to be a man plot line ,enough!!!!! it ruined SeonDeok for me ,i could not get further than ep 15 before my patience ran out .than we have Sungkyunkwan Scandal which was only saved by the two supporting characters Crazy Horse and Gu Yonga as the two leads just got on your nerves , This plot line actually started with Coffee Prince and since than its been deluge .At least here it is not the main storyline .
That aside this is a good solid historical,it started on World this weekend ,if KBS can keep it together they can banish the memory of Empress . I agree the production is great on this and very refreshing to see the armor , Choi Myongil is always perfect as an Evil Queen . So so far so good . Wish there was more in the English Language about Geunchogo ,even the more in depth sources like Hulbert do not even mention him . He gets about one paragraph of no value in the translated Sanguk Sagi/Yusa .

Oh No!! Not the hair! Ep 16 Spoilers: . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Gee, Yeo Gu sure is passing it on, isn't he? Daddy whacks of his hair, now he lops off Sneaky Slimeball Brother's and Evil New King Adopted Son's hair. So (since I have no subs) what does cutting off the hair signify? Is it to embarrass/shame the person, or is there even worse meaning there? And why slice Brother's eye rather than something else, (like maybe the jugular)? I think our hero showed remarkable self-restraint.
The red hatchet - every time I see it, it cracks me up. Makes me think that the guy is a volunteer firefighter. I think the Archfiend would have a good laugh too...

I suppose they're going by the belief that a child has what he has because everything that he is, is bestowed by the parent. Daddy hacking off his kid's hair could mean a few things: you're no child of mine, I'm taking back what I gave, I disown you, you are a shame to me thus you are no son of mine ... etc, etc, etc. And since I have done so, you do not belong to this family, no right to inherit and so on.

Yes,it is to shame the person. All upper class males tie up their hair in a bun.Now he can't.Meaning he isn't noble enough to do so for,at least, the period during which the hair takes to regrow. It is not acceptable to kill fellow royalty of the same country without extraordinary reason. He's really thrown kerosene on the fire of SLIMY'S hate. Not to mention SLIMY'S possible desire for YeonGu's sweetheart!

Episodes 17 and 18 - OK, now I'm really lost. Can anyone who either doesn't need subs or has them from somewhere clue me in on a few things?
Spoilers up through Ep 18: . . . . . . . . . . Where exactly are Gu and his buddies now? Somewhere on the Chinese mainland I assume. And why did Evil Brother #3 and Adopted Prince kidnap him and take him there in the first place? Are they in one of the two mainland kingdoms shown on the map? Is the city they're raiding in one of those countries? And why raid that city? Are he and Blood Brother trying to start a new country? Does this have anything to do with the country in the north that Gogoryo has been having a war with?
Who exactly is Fan Man and why is he conspiring against Gu with Evil Brother #3?
What did Usurper King promise to Wicked Queen and Grandfather in order to get their blessing for his ascension to the Baekje throne? Did he promise that Evil Brother #1 would continue to be Crown Prince and be his successor? Looks like he's annexed Wicked Queen as wife #2?
What did Usurper King say in Episode 17 that got everyone in such a lather (something to do with Gogoryo)? Was he saying he would cede the disputed land to Gogoryo?
What was written on the ribbon from Gu that got Yeohwa in such trouble with Gogoryo King?
What was the part with the royal seal about?
Why does Gu continue to let Warrior Girl keep the ring she stole from him

What was written on the ribbon from Gu that got Yeohwa in such trouble with Gogoryo King? What was the part with the royal seal about? Why does Gu continue to let Warrior Girl keep the ring she stole from him Gu and his buddies are in Liaoxi, China. First of all, Gu and his buddies would've went there even without the kidnapping from Evil bro #3 and Hae Gun. Liaoxi has been set as their destination as soon as they were released from prison. The grandfather wanted them to go to Liaoxi as well. The Evil bro #3 and Hae Gun kidnapped them so they can kill them on their way. Although this may not be 100% accurate, Liaoxi may have been a Baekjae territory for a while according to some sources. Therefore it is not part of any two Chinese kingdoms in the drama, but it is part of Baekaje. Liaoxi is where Gu was exiled before coming back to mainland Baekjae on Korean peninsula. King Biryu, who is the father of Gu, grew up there as well. The city they are raiding is in one of the two Chinse kingdoms, which is the Zhao. The Blood Brother(Mishil's evil brother), whose name is Wi Birang in this drama, is trying to revive the lost Buyeo dynasty by taking over the Zhao's city. His grandfather was the last king of the Buyeo dynasty. His great-great-grandfather was probably King Geumwa of Buyeo, the stepfather of Jumong. Gu, on the other hand, is trying to take over the Zhao's city to acheive more power and get his rightful throne back. This has nothing to do with Yan dynasty, the country that Goguryeo has been having war with. The Fan Man is Ajikai and he is conspring with Evil brother #3(his name is San), because he thinks Gu would be dangerous to his master Wi Birang. However, he doesn't trust San and Hae Gun either. He's just conspring with them until he kills Gu and then he will go separate ways with San and Hae Gun. The Usurper King promised the Wicked Queen that she would be his wife#1 rather than his original wife and that he will make Evil bro #1(his name is Chan) as the crowned prince rather than his own son. The new king and Wicked Queen used to be in love 40 years ago. The Usurper King promised the grandfather that he will let Gu live if he becomes the king. He obviously didn't keep that promise. Yes, the Usurper King said that he will cede the disputed land to Goguryeo. He said that a small nation can't win against a big country. The ribbon got Yeohwa in trouble with Goguryeo King, because it said "No matter where you are, Yeohwa is my woman" The royal seal with the deer is the royal seal of the demised Buyeo dynasty, which Wi Birang(Mishi's brother) is trying to revive. Goguryeo King wants to use that in order to get help from the descendants of Buyeo people in the war against the Chinese Yan dynasty. The part about Gu letting the warrior girl(her name is Wi Hongrang)keep his ring has not been explained, but I'm guessing that Gu is showing interest to her. She actually becomes Gu's queen #2 later on.
