Grand Chef recap Ep20—an overview, but with everything included, not necessarily in the order it happened. If you have any specific questions, ask me.
(Trout soup lady is played by Jung Young-sook, who was Ji-yeun’s mother in Who’s My Love—as noted by Ginny—and is one of my favorite actors. She and Choi Bool-am (Chef Oh) are in the new SBS drama Your Heaven as married characters.)
Love quadrangle. Bong-ju attacks Sung-chan and accuses him of interfering in his relationship with Joo-hee. After this, Jin-su walks away, says to S-C that she loves him but he is too complicated and she’s just a simple girl who wants love to be straightforward. [She IS simple isn’t she.]
Regrets and goodbyes. Trout soup lady and Chef Oh say goodbye. She says they’ll meet again, asks why he’s so serious and impatient about Sung-chan. “Are you dying or something?” Of course, he blanches but she doesn’t notice. She tells him, “I tried to make you love me but your wife (maybe she was his fiancée then?) looked like Sophia Loren. I only looked like Audrey Hepburn.” [Cute.] They have a sweet hug and S-C and Chef leave. They visit a temple where their ancestors’ memorial sauces are held and discuss how these sauces are so perfect they’ll keep forever. S-C’s father and grandfather have empty sauce jars [presumably because they were buried in absentia]. Chef shouts sweet nothings (messages to the dead) into the empty jars. They forage in the woods for herbs and recall the first meeting between the Chef and S-C’s dad, how the Chef knew him for many years but didn’t realize he was the Royal Chef’s descendant until it was too late, and they cry and stuff. Then Chef Oh gets a call about the kimchee and they return to U-A-J.
Back at the ranch (U-A-J). Bong-ju storms in and rages at Min-woo about the bad kimchee. (And he actually should get some of the blame.) B-J says it’s the pickles, “replace everything made last year and just use Fairmont Hotel pickles until ours are re-made.” (I believe the Fairmont is Director Jang’s hotel.) Then he storms out and leaves on a business trip, taking out lots of time to insult Joo-hee on the way. M-W turns against B-J—apparently, he’s been approached by the Fairmont to be their chef, but before he goes, he’s going to bring U-A-J down.
Secret alliance. Everyone makes kimchee, but it’s not right even with Fairmont pickles. Joo-hee’s dad, who has been insulted by Bong-ju, screams about his absence. At this point, Min-woo approaches him, and they secretly join forces to bring B-J down.
Heart attack-yakyakyak. Chef Oh shows up and runs out to taste last year’s sauces and bean paste; he’s so upset he breaks a pot of soy sauce and cries, bring back Sauce Lady Jo! Bring back elfin man! He has some sort of attack then and everyone takes him inside. [TIP: If an old person clutches his chest and collapses, the first thing you should do is CALL AN AMBULANCE. Just sayin'.] Sung-chan swears he’ll investigate. He does, but everything at U-A-J seems normal. Ms Jo returns and prays to the sauce gods, but they can’t find elfin man. Sung-chan and Ms Jo try to rescue the soy sauces by cooking them, and S-C discovers that the Ms Jo’s “pet” pigeons refuse to eat the soybeans, even though they used to do it. [Filthy birds.] Min-woo tries to throttle S-C's investigation, but the kitchen staff help S-C.
Mr. Han’s love. Jin-su keeps getting food gifts (milk, juice, apples) dropped off at her apartment by Mr. Han. She is annoyed and brings them back, dumping them on his desk. “Hello and thank you for coming!” cries Mr. Han as though oblivious. In comes Mi-ran, who has been outfoxed by an interviewee, and they convince J-S to try to get the interview (eventually she does, I believe). In this way, J-S is lured back to Point magazine.
Helpful chef. The same Japanese man who told M-W the kimchee was bad is back at U-A-J. He asks for Chef Oh, tells him he can tell the pickles and preserved foods all come from the Fairmont. As a fellow chef, he says, he fervently hopes U-A-J can get its “flavors” back. Later, Chef Oh wants to shut down the restaurant until they figure everything out, but Bong-ju (who has returned) says absolutely not, he’s in charge here. However, Joo-hee’s father says, your dad can’t do whatever he wants to, and neither can you. I’m calling a meeting of the board.
The beans. In the meantime, Min-woo has locked Sung-chan out of the storehouses. With the help of Chef Choi, S-C gets the keys and finds out that some of their soybeans are rotting. He visits the farmer and finds out about a flood the previous year. He comes running home, announcing “it’s the beans!” just as the above conversation about the board meeting is finishing up.
