I don't know about a sequel, but the news is that there will be a movie version of Dae Jang Geum, scripted by the original writer, Kim Yeong Hyun, to come out in 2013. No news on who will be the cast. I would prefer Lee Young Ae to reprise her role as Jang Geum. If not Lee Young Ae, I'm sure the competition for that role would be fierce. Surely the role of a lifetime, since the movie is for international release. www.hancinema.net/national-drama-dae-jang-geum-into-a-movie-spread-korean-food-worldwide-30697.html

Lee Young-ae is no longer in the acting business. I doubt she'll return

Has she retired? I know she recently had twins, but the last I heard she still was open to taking acting roles. She made an official announcement to the contrary?

Yes she did when her pregnancy was announced ,aside from that she now has a rep for being difficult because she kept MBC hanging for years re the sequel and "Seondeok" while she went back to school , Than she gets married becomes pregnant and retires .
In all fairness to her she had a Two Year Tour to promote Jewel ,plus she had to work at the Jewel Theme park ,finally she hooked back up with Park Chan Wook to make" Lady Vengance "to shed the goody goody image ,She is well sick of Jewel and i doubt she would want to go through all that again .
There will never be a Jewel sequel without her at least on Tv ,
As to the film im betting Lee Yo Won after she finishes the "Seondeok "Film ,both projects have the same writer .

If she's incline to return, no doubt it'll be after her kids are grown. By then, she might be amiable to a Jewel something, but haha, that's hardly like to happen.

There was sort of a sequel, I just remembered. It had many of the same actors, including the doctor who grew herbs and maybe young Lady Choi (Miri?), but no Lee Young Ae. The setting and costumes were the same, but I didn't see DJG and didn't stick around long enough to figure out the plot.
What would the story be, since at the end of the story, DJG was married with a daughter, wasn't she? I don't think she'd want any more politics. Would she want her daughter to go to the palace? It's so dangerous!
I suppose they could do a story that's a variation on the original, the way Gary Paulsen has written different versions of The Hatchet. In one, the boy is rescued before winter, and in another he isn't, and in a third he has an eventful trip while moviemakers film the story of his first experience. (Or that's how I remember it, anyway.)
Now, I can't think of a variation. The story is so perfect. ;D (Downfall of the Chois? No, they're needed to make trouble. DJG has a sibling? A brother who joins the guards? A sister who's a kisaeng? ehh...)

That was the story of Dr. Heo Jun (called, oddly enough, "Heo Jun" LOL) and it was made in the early 90s--one of the first wildly popular sageuk, made well before DJG. By the same director, if I remember correctly. (And I should, for pity's sake.) Bo

There is meant to be Dae Jang Geum 2 next year ,it will be about her daughter Lee Byun Hoon the writer is out as of course is Lee Young Ae . MBC have tried to make this for years but were held up by various cast members refusing to commit and same with writers . Now they are going ahead regardless .
Similar problems with IRIS 2 that was ready to roll only to find Miss Tae Hee decided it was more important to go to Japan and do a J Drama instead ,this after KBS had bent over backwards and fore wards to cater to her whims and desires inc re -writing the whole thing and waiting until they could get all the other three leads back . They should have dumped Tae Hee and just gone ahead
