I am trying to count up the major coincidences underlying the dramatic structure of YH. So far I think it is either three or four.
As the story opens, you have a network of pre-existing relationships involving Young-Joon and his grandmother with the Jo family business. Sang-Min, the Director of the business, is involved with Ja-Young. But then some coincidental events occur which involve Ja-Young with other people in that network, not through Sang-Min, but independently:
(1) The first occurs in the first episode, in which Sun-Joo, trying to retrieve her dropped cell phone while driving, runs into a guy on a motorcycle who by chance happens to be her sister's director-and-future-husband's soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's brother.
(2) The second occurs in episode 2, I think, in which Ja-Young's mother is hospitalized for a heart attack and winds up sharing a room with Grandma Sohn, who is her daughter's soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend's employer-and-future-wife's business associate. This sets the stage for Grandma Wey to become Grandma Sohn's friend, and, later, for Ja-Young to be invited to a party at the Sohn house on the day that Young-Joon returns from the U.S. (Ja-Young happens to run into Young-Joon in a store that same day, and you can call that coincidence 2A if you like, but it's not necessary to the plot because they would meet that night anyway.)
(3) The third is the "Little Shop"/"You've Got Mail" coincidence: Yuri and Mimi turn out to be working in the same place.
(4?) The fourth is that Na-Young's co-worker and future interest Ki-Hoon ends up boarding with Na-Young's sister's ex-boyfriend's father. However, I wasn't watching the show when Na-Young got her job or when Ki-Hoon rented his room, so I don't know if this is an independent coincidence or not. It wouldn't surprise or disappoint me if it were, but I'm curious. Did Ki-Hoon find out about the apartment third-hand through Ja-Young and Na-Young? I have the impression he had the job before he had the room, but is that right? How did Woon-Kyu advertise the vacancy? Does anyone remember all this?
