It was so sad to see, Grandpa get left by that lady. When she told him the news that she is leaving, his hand stated shaking. It was so sad to see him hurt. Even though he might not admit it. He wanted this relationship to blossom even more. Me too, but he's putting her needs over his own. I hoped he would try to stop her, but he would probably feel guilty of holding her back. Too bad, because they seem suited. I see a resemblance in her face to Jung-hwa from Emperor of the Sea. Very serene.

Aww, puppy, you don't like wooden guys? Wait, that could be misinterpreted... ... I think both Ryu Jin and Han Jin-hee are a little, let us say, low on the energy. However, I would not agree with either you or Soju that they are "wooden"--when I think wooden, I think Gary Cooper, or say, Eric, and I'd say they both have more emotional range than those guys. I think in the right part, they each can rock. Bo PS - maybe his eyes are red because he cries a lot because people say he's "wooden"--kekekekeke....

I had the exact same puzzlement, Pippibella. It was just plain weird. Even if a scene had been cut out of the broadcast, we still would've seen everybody in the family reacting to the fact of that marriage in all of the other scenes of the episode, wouldn't we? And his eldest son kept asking him why he was getting all dressed up, was he going to a wedding, etc.? And didn't they agree in the most recent episode to remain sweethearts for the rest of their lives, without legal entanglements? I understand that the act of becoming legally married in South Korea can be about as dry and simple as our going to City Hall here in the U.S., but it still doesn't play right to me. We didn't see them at the ward office going through the legal motions, yet they both got dolled-up and had a wedding photo taken. True, Grandpa plays things much closer to the vest than the rest of his family does, and it's easy to see where he'd decide to just do the deed, rather than to first announce his intentions to his relatives and have all of that screeching drama contaminate his quiet happiness -- but at least we viewers ought to have been treated to the joy of the proposal and its acceptance. We've earned it!
Has anybody else figured this out? Hope I don't forget to watch it tonight, since perhaps it'll be cleared up in this next episode.

Yes, I agree that this development is just weird and hard to figure out. They did indeed say to each other and to the family that they wanted to date for the rest of their lives and not get married. Next thing, Grandpa's putting on a suit and saying he's getting married. I thought he was joking!
I have to say, I've decided I don't like Grandpa very much anymore. I know he's just fulfilling his traditional role in the family, but I dislike the way he takes everyone's subservience for granted and comes and goes as he pleases. He comes home, and everyone has to greet him, and he just tells them to bring him things. And he's gruff with them. What does he contribute? Does he even provide any caring or support for the family members? No, he tells them to (1) quit complaining, (2) mind their own business, (3) get out of his room, (4) don't expect him back for dinner--pick one, depending on the situation.
Of course, he gets credit for having been the family provider, etc., and there's a huge expectation of automatic respect for elders, but I think he's pushing it. If he would just be a little nicer to his family, I'd like him a lot more.

I don’t know, Lucy. He’s a little gruff, standard for older people. And he has certain expectations, but the culture instills that in people. But the fact that, as top dog, he doesn’t treat everybody beneath him in the family pecking order like something he just scraped off of the bottom of his shoe, makes him a prince among men, as far as the way k-dramas portray superior/inferior roles. I think he’s just annoyed with the household members right now. For the first time in 80+ years – ever – he has a private life, has an interest outside of the immediate family, is experiencing tenderness and love, and I think he wants some privacy and to be free of the third degree. Also, the contrast between the quality of his ladyfriend and of the time they spend together, compared with the quality of the family members still living together in that household and the way they behave, has to be almost disorienting. It’s sort of like stepping from Brigadoon into PeeWee’s Playhouse and back again. I guess that I’ve felt that his understanding and supporting Hanja in her need to have a life, set him apart from and above the others, so I view him through that filter.

Yes Lila, I agree with you about Grandpa. I was absolutely dumbfounded when that younger son came to visit and then acted as though he were in charge of his father . . what a lot of nerve. I'm glad grandpa told him off. He needed to hear that. Grandpa is quite amazing in the way he accepts and tries to understand his DIL Hanja. He seems to be just about the ONLY one that does . I really didn't like this show at the beginning but as it has enfolded, I am a fan of it now. It's a lot more realistic than most of the other K-dramas, i.e. YAMD, which I am finding to be a big yawn lately.

Perhaps this may be an omen of things to come? I can understand why Grandpa was upset when he saw his girlfriend "flirting" with a male customer ouside her store. I would not be at all surprised that Grandpa will get dumped by her.
