I'm really appreciating the music in this drama. At first I thought it was rather wierd. But now I find the running theme enchanting. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the intruments are... strings yes... but there's that little tickkkky sound. what is that?

I noticed some music that seemed odd too...
It sounded Scottish or Irish...Sort of...
Out of place for a historical Korean drama...

Sounds like a hammer dulcimer to me. Perhaps it's a yanggeum.

Some kind of double reed, playing a pentatonic scale, both of which are found world-wide. It's probably really some synthesizer or sampler or such, with that sound loaded into it

There's one recurring theme that very much reminds me of The Great Jang Geum...need to watch a recent episode to describe it...anyone else feel the same way?

As a musician myself, I have to admit some ambivalence to the music in The Great King Sejong. Look at all the obvious piles of money that were spent on GKS to hire wonderful actors, make hundreds of historically accurate costumes and film in fabulous locations. Yet they've just got THE SAME HANDFUL OF MUSICAL CLIPS played OVER and OVER AGAIN!!! I'll be honest, it bothers me that it's SO predictable. Instead of having music that more accurately reflects the different dramatic and emotional dynamics that happen, NO. It's ALWAYS that yelping "Whoa, whoa-oh-whoa" happening over the Celtic-sounding pipes-with-strings at the end of the episode. First of all, it's ENTIRELY too 21st Century-sounding to fit dramatically. Even making allowances that in world music there are always pipes of one sort or other, that singing doesn't sound the least bit Korean. It certainly doesn't sound like it really fits EVERY SINGLE TIME the drama climaxes at the end of each episode! That's the one that really gets me! They had money! They couldn't find another composer who could have done more, done better with what they were willing to pay? I strongly think it was someone who doesn't consider music that important in the first place who only wanted that relative handful of musical "motifs", so they could pay a set amount of money, and be done with it. But it's irritating to those of us for whom music is more than just background noise. It doesn't ruin the series, but it certainly does remove some of the sheen from its professional polish.

er... severus, I think I undesrstand how you feel about the "overdose" of the theme music, but as a huge korean fan of GKS, I'd like to give a piece of my mind : I actually wait for the moment when it feels like "Oh, here comes that music!"(most of the times, on climax scene, just as you said) every single episode! I assume that these theme musics might sound a little bit too exotic and weird to foreigners, espacially to westerners, but I think it's very korean and even a little addictive. I'm even thinking of buying its OST!

It's very common in movies and television to have musical "themes" for various characters and situations. That said, I can certainly see where severus is coming from. Many of the musical cues are, shall I say, a little too obvious. Not quite in your face, but not as subliminal as they could be, either.
In all, though, I do llike the music.

Mind you, I never said I didn't like the music. It's the paucity, or lack, of more than a mere handful of the same old stuff, over and over again. When I listen to other series, there isn't the same overuse of the "same old same old" EVERY episode. It points to lack of imagination. Those aren't "motifs" in the true sense of the word. It isn't like a Wagnerian opera, where every character has their own bit of music which stands for them alone. It's laziness--or cheapness. If the producers TRULY valued music up there with the production values in costumes, say, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. They would have shelled out more money for at least a dozen more "pieces" that would have given more variety. This way, with just the few, it's too easy for EVERYONE to notice the same things over and over again. Did you know that in "Seinfeld", for instance, as simple as that silly little bass guitar-mouth "popping" music was, it was differently composed every episode? This meant it wasn't predictable. They appreciated their audiences' intelligence. Also, those musicians got steady work out of it, like the actors. As a musician, I can't help but think about the fact that some musicians could have made more money, if only the GKS budget would have allowed it. And as an audience member, I wouldn't get as musically bored. "Oh, here it comes AGAIN--geez, I wish they'd have something different here." Kind of interferes with my appreciation of the drama that's going on.

With Dae Jang Geum, the soundtrack was essential a hamdful of songs with just different variations (from a dance club re-mix of the main theme, to English translations of others, inclding an opera-type of song).
i understand the desire for more variety....but i think i can live with it.
i'd like to hear reviews and / or samples of the Original Sound Track (OST)
