I liked DJY. It was entertaining. But it was poorly produced, full of holes, repetition, and just kinda cheesy sometimes. GKS is a high quality intelligent production comparable to Yi Soon Shin. I am enjoying this show immensely.

Hey, tom, welcome to the board! From where are you watching?
And yes, I echo your comments. After a bit of a confusing start, "The Great King Sejong" has really gotten into high gear (for me, at least)! ;D

I completely agree with you, Tom. I enjoyed DJY too, but you can already see that GKS is way better quality-wise. Somebody in charge of it is doing a great job of keeping the storylines not only interesting but connected together. There aren't any holes in the plots or weird turns that make no sense. Now let's just hope they don't try to stretch extra episodes out of the series and put in a lot of silly or repetitious filler material.
Welcome to the forum, by the way. Hope we see more of you here.

Hi mikey and ajk. I'm from Streamwood just west of Chicago. Anyone know how long this series is going to last? I'm assuming it will be as long as Age of Warriors or Yi Soon Shin.

It's supposed to be 100 episodes, tom. I believe that AOW was 140 and I know that IYSS was 104. DJY was supposed to be 100, but they decided during the series to extend it and it ended up at 134. That was a bad decision; it really hurt the quality of the series. Like you said, GKS seems to be a very smartly produced series so far, so I don't think we have to worry about any such thing happening to GKS.

Wow! I only found AOW towards the last 20 or 30 episodes but it was still riveting! So far, GKS episodes seem to move along at a pretty even pace but sometimes it's hard to follow when they are covering too many sub-plots in one episode. Looking forward to your episode summaries because it's still a challenge to follow all the nuances and changing faces!

Even though this show seems less action oriented that the most recent historical dramas, like DJY, Yi Soon-Shin, Age of Warrios or Emperor Wang Guhn, it's actually more in line with the dramas that first drew me into the genre.
Chang Nok Soo started off with the main characters as kids, and then showed the evolution of the featured king.
It would be interesting to see Tears of the Dragon, to get the background of the current show.

Emperor Wang Guhn ran for two hundred episodes. That's more than an extended daily drama. And, being shown only twice a week, it was on the air for over two years!

I am now 12 episodes into this and its pretty amazing ,its everything i hoped for and more . I would not compare it to DJY at all though because DJY is very campy with the most over the top bad guys you can imagine . DJY has almost a comic book feel to it yet it does work . Sejong though is on another level altogether . My only niggling gripe is the depiction of the Japanese Pirates is not accurate but neither were the Samurai in IYSS and i still enjoyed that . So this so far is pretty amazing . Sadly i missed all of ep 5 and a large part of 6 because the PBS station im watching it on had transmission problems but thanks to the ep synopsis here i was able to fill in the gaps .

Emperor Wang Guhn ran for two hundred episodes. That's more than an extended daily drama. And, being shown only twice a week, it was on the air for over two years! EWG showed how an extended drama can work because it had such an ambitious scope - it covered the story of 3 Kingdoms over multiple generations and from many perspectives. There was a lot of philosophical, political and spiritual depth to EWG and that's what The Great King Sejong is striving for and what was so great about YSS as well. DJY actually felt like it lasted longer! What really bothers me now when I think about DJY is that after 134 episodes, I still don't know what really happened much more than when we started watching, except what I ended up reading. What's known about the history from the period is actually pretty interesting and DJY didn't illuminate any of it. GKS is a step in the right direction and is the best show Ch. 41 has had on in ages! I agree with JP that it has a lot of the elements that attracted us to the Korean dramas to begin with. Also, thanks, ajk, for the excellent recaps!

This is an interesting thread for me since we here in Philly watched the final episode of DJY yesterday evening. My assumption is that we will be seeing Sejong next.
Thanks!
