I just love the character of Xue Rengui. His role adds an intelligent comedic touch to some of the overacting done by the other cast members. Honpei is a foil for him. Remember the 'cape' incident?

Agreed! XR is tops, and Hong Pei is his perfect sidekick. Even though XR is an unkind tyrant to HP, HP manages, somehow, to hold some kind of affection for his master. The cape incident was a good one.

LOL, yes... the "cape incident" cracked quite a few grins... "Oh... Hongpei-ah?" "Yes, Chong-oon?" "Please-- take that curtain off." "Hmph! I happen to think that I look quite dashing!" (here he flicks the blue cape and sticks up his nose ever so slightly) "Dashing, indeed! Aigu!" Xue Rengui is the best actor out of the whole cast. And Hongpei, although he has a limited role, adds quite a bit to a scene when he gives those mournful looks with his "puppy" eyes, or he shyly cowers before Xue's "greatness". And when they were both younger I always loved when Xue would call Hongpei "kid"... they were (and still are) such a loveable pair. I can't say I have one real favorite--- I love DJY and his brothers, and Xue is just wonderful. They all add so much, it's impossible for me to have just one personal favorite.

Xue Rengui has many dimensions which to me, makes him easy to identify with. Sudol has some of the same humanity. The heroes (DJY et al) are mostly good and brave, the villains (Shin Hong and his home boys) you just KNOW they are going to slay and plot and pillage. But Rengui is so REAL, He can admire King Bojang and be genuinely fond of Guemlan but still do what a general must when the time comes. He's funny and deadly and weak and strong, full of himself and humble, good and bad. Kind of like most of us, I guess. Plus, Lee Duk Hwa does an amazing job.
