Yes it was, jinju0, not only sad but tough to watch. Just an awful lot of death, scene after scene.
For a while I thought Gaepilsamun was really kind of a pathetic soul. Wasn't too bright; got conned into entering the conflict back at Mt. Madu; had his tribe wiped out; and ended up groveling at DJY's feet for mercy. But I'm glad they gave him some dignity after that and put him in a position of honor, and that he died a hero (if he had to die).
I think his role was probably much bigger than was originally planned, because of the decision to lengthen the series. Maybe they even created the character because of it. But yeah, it's always sad to see a regular character bow out. Unless it's Shin Hong, of course.

i wonder if he was just meant for that short storyline, but got popular & had good chemistry with the characters, so they kept him on (like Horn Rmmed Glasses/HRG/Mr. Bennet of Heroes) He definitely died well. One thing i won't miss -- him talking about being the Wolf of Mt. Madu 50 million times an episode. Certainly appropriate in this episode, but a little annoying in others... To be honest, i think this series needs MORE meaningful deaths. Emperor Wang Guhn had several of them spread out, to help move the story. There are 2 deaths that should have happened already (according to history -- not that they follow it in detail , that could have made more sense than other plot twists. Geom would have been a shocker (which i thought was going to happen), but i wonder what plans they have for him...

Personally, Geom should have died a couple of episodes ago when the Khitan force got annihilated by Li Kaigu's Tang army....Geom would have died a hero for both Khitan and Goguryeo and it would have made for a much more interesting direction in this series..... Man, this series should be made into the video game.....

Gaepil and Tungso were a welcome addition to DJY's merry band....Both possessed endearing qualities, including a great sense of loyalty, humility, and also exhibiting a great comraderie and kinship with the others....

When Gaepil' and Tungso were first brought into DJY's group, they always gave me cause to roll my eyes because of their rather "dumb" antics and comments. They always seemed to say something stupid at the moment I least wanted to hear it, and the way Gaepil' would let his mouth hang open---he constantly reminded me of the movie "Napoleon Dynamite"! (Got a problem with that?) As time passed and the characters developed, though, Gaepil' (yes, and Tungso) no longer irked me. Instead, I looked to Gaepil' to bring amusement and smiles into an episode, and like Sudol, he was great for comic relief at a rather tense moment. And they way he carried that monster of a sword on his shoulder all the time always made me laugh. It got to a point where I found myself adoring the character. He was very simple, yes, but he had a good heart and a weighty sword-swing. I was on the edge of my seat the entire episode. The scene where Gaepil', already wounded, was running with his men when he recieved an arrow from Li Kaigu was an amazing scene--- how he ended up with four arrows sticking into him, and yet he summoned up the strength to get up onto his feet and keep running. That man had some feroucious will-power! He just kept saying "I have to lure them to the ravine... I have to lead them to Sudol; I can't let him down. I can't die until I lure them to the ravine." This guy's affection for Sudol was something to be admired. His death scene was heart-wrenching. How he whispered "See, Sudol?...I kept my promise." And when Sudol cried in anguish, begging him not to die, Gaepil' asked "Sudol!...Who am I?" And of course... Sudol's tearful reply was "The Wolf... the Wolf of Madu." What a heart-wrenching scene! I'm really going to miss our laughable, loveable ol' "wolf".

yes. i agree with all of you. and what was so great was even though gaepil had this " wolf of madu" attitude he came to be a great help to the cause that djy and everyone was working so hard for all those years. when they got back to the camp with gaepil's body and djy was crying for him to open his eye because there was more work to be done. that was a very hard moment. they are all true brothers , it's just so wonderful. everyone is equal to djy no matter were you came from or what you did in the past.

Thought his death was fantastic. Not that I wanted to see him die, however it's just his change from a powerful wolf into an absolute wasted warrior was great. Whoever did the makeup job for his character scared the heck out of me. Just an observation: When Li Kaigu shot 2 arrows into Gaepil's chest and Gaepil pulled 1 out, later in the scene unless I missed something, you saw at least 2 arrows in his chest and (3 arrows in his back which he did'nt have before.) Where did they come from ?

I noticed that too, jebu--he seemed to have extra arrows in him all of a sudden.
Maybe he was wearing an Arrow shirt!
