I get the branding but they do this thing with poles or something, breaking legs or knees, whatever. It looks horrendous but the torturees (?) are able to get up and walk afterwards. What's that about?

It's something I'm not entirely sure what is either. I imagine that the feet are secured in a position and then they do the log things to perhaps break ankles?
or perhaps being in that kind of chair, maybe they're pushing the thighs on the edges of the chair and it's meant to break those. If not, then it's probably just for looks.

They try to be pretty authentic with these scenes, dethscithe (great name!) so I'm sure the poles are historical. Your idea that the feet are secured and the thighs are pushed against something nasty might be right, but I seem to remember Xue Rengui saying "Break every bone in his body if you have to" when they were working on Namseng and then in the next scene, Namseng stumbles to his bed with only slightly more stiffness I have when getting out of mine.

Okay, we have a clear picture of what it's supposed to be, but I'm still not quite sure.

Where is that? Disney Joyoung? I think the poles are wrong. In the torture scene I saw last nite, the prisoner's ankles were tied together and the poles were spreading his knees apart (with much grunting and groaning) I'm pretty sure anyway. But that doesn't compute. The lotus position in yoga has the same configuraton with no pain, at least not after you've done it a few times.

Actually, it's Havasu Resort. An amusement park of sorts that was also the set of which they filmed Dae Jo Young on.

Lol, amusing pic, deth. Frankly, the torture scenes are "bad" enough for me (considering that half the time I have my eyes closed; all I need to hear is the bone-crunching and teeth-nashing). There is, however, one detail that I simply must point out (it never fails to annoy me each time it appears in an episode). I'm sorry, but pink blood is not convincing... it usually is not noticable until it stains the clothing; then the true color is revealed! For anyone who saw the last historical drama, "The Immortal Yi Soon Shin", I'm sure that you'd agree that their remarkably-realistic, deep red "blood" would put the DJY producers to shame.

Havasu Resort, dethsithe? There's a Lake Havasu on the CAL/NEV border, used to be ringed with big hotels. You don't mean that, do you?
