Xue Rengui is such a masterful politician/leader. It''s no wonder why they still have him on the show, despite being dead in real-life history He plays off getting Li Wen back as important, claling him a son (where most of us watching have thought of him as a son alright, a son of ... Tang!), on the surface, maing the rescue benficial to him and then in private to Li Wen: "i don't like you" "you idiot" after Li Wen's repentance About Li Wen -- wonder if his reply is sincere or not. He said to his men that he did the best he could -- which , if true, is pretty pathetic. But with Xue Rengui, as he had been honest (yet respectful), Li Wen recognizes what a jerk he's been over all this time. It will be interesting to see how he develops over time.

I kind of wonder if they’re trying to transform Li Wen into more of a worthy adversary because of the need to stretch the series out for 36 extra episodes. We’ll see; it depends on how long Xue Rengui sticks around. But if that’s the reason, credit to the writers for coming up with an interesting way of doing it. Xue Rengui being backed into a corner, basically trading back for him because it was the best way out of a bad situation (or so he thought), it was a clever plotline. Li Wen isn’t bright enough to figure out all of that, so his being so moved because of the spin that Xue Rengui put on it all—very believable.
The other scene that was very revealing in 93 was Shin Hong trying to talk Sun Wanrong into seizing the right of command from DJY. We’re really seeing the depths of this guy’s thirst for vengeance over his master’s death way back when. He knows darned well how successful DJY has been and what he can accomplish, and yet he’s arguing for command to be turned over to someone completely unproven. The guy plays Li Kaigu like a fiddle, but this just seemed way beyond any of that. You do need to win the war, genius.
