Has it ever been made clear what the deal is with Soonie and Youngie's brother? Why is he not returning from America, and why can't they tell the father? The only direct contact they've had with him was the phone call poor Soonie made to ask him to come back. Up until that point, I thought he must surely be dead because they acted so squirrely whenever his name came up.

I thought Soonie approached the brother oddly. If she really wanted him to come, why dump the whole care of Dad thing on him on the phone? Wouldn't it be more persuasive to say, he misses you, come for a visit.

Maybe they "Plan B'd" him. He could be keeping Bok-soon company in the unemployment line...
The show is only 24 eps. long maybe they figured they had too many characters already.

But it was from episode one that he was the mystery guy. Right away there were references to the brother in America and they tried to keep their dad away from the subject. I thought they might have given a reason why he was there and not coming home.

Soonie put him thru school. i think he has got his Phd and now living the good life in the U.S. Since he is the only son,it is expected of him to take care of their father. But it is quite obvious that he is very settled in the states and has no intention going back to Korea to fulfill his resposibilities. The ungrateful creep. After all the sacrafices Soonie made so that he can be successful in life, and he won't even agree to her pleas to come home to see their aged father.

okay, thanks for clearing that up. I always got the impression that he went to the us and became a bum.

Yes, Bae. He's an ungrateful, spoiled bum who only knows how to take but can't give anything back. (I'd say, LOL, but there are too many of them...)

on the show, or in general?

on the show, or in general? In general. It seems people who are given every advantage by wives, or parents, or whomever, learn how NOT to appreciate it but just think they deserve things. I'm thinking of all those doctors put through medical school by their long-suffering wives, who then decided they were "bored"--and it still goes on today, you'd think that sort of thing would stop with increased rights for women, but it really hasn't. Come to think of it, though, Sung-moon is just such a person. No, the whole family is like that. Soonie sacrificed and scraped money and wore cruddy clothes for her family, and worked like a draft horse for that whiny MIL, and all she gets is lectures on wasting "their" money. Stupid gits. Bo PS - lest I sound unduly negative, it IS "Monday" for me (first day of work week), LOL.

You are so right about that family, Bo! The SIL only sneers and complains-egad! At the beginning of the drama, she kept giving her baby for Soonie to take care of, I thought Soonie had 3 kids. Do they know how bad the BIL is? He has lots of affairs, doesn't he? I suppose he might have been only flirting, but I doubt it.

I think the BIL keeps TRYING to have affairs, Ginny, but he's so inept his wife immediately senses it and puts on the kibosh, LOL.
I was watching two episodes yesterday and today (the ones when they kept having Mija over to their house so the MIL would "love" her) and HONESTLY, what dreadful, dreadful people! Why couldn't THEY be the ones having fatal diseases. I did enjoy Ms Bong putting in her two cents, though, like when she got them to demand money from Mija for the wedding. Speaking of the Mij, I'm beginning to root for her and the old guy. I mean, this girl is desperate. Obviously stupid and crass and greedy, but desperate, too. You can hardly blame her for going for the guy who won't send her son away.

For some reason, as much as my mind tells me to give ms. bong a tight slap because of all her crazy antics in a desperate attempt to revive her youth, no one irritates me more than soonie's MIL. What a B****! She went through the exact same thing soonie has gone through. Could she be a bit less sympathetic?
Mija is another issue all together. She is so shameless. But, if she really sat down and thought about it, Bo, she would have kept her son anyway because of SM. SM would do anything for her and eventually, the family would have no say in that matter, or any matter at that. Instead of swindling SM's money, she should've just stuck around to see what would happen.

Mija is despicable-how could she leave him is such debt as well as dump him? Maybe he could sue her for the money, either before or after Mija gets married. Or he could tell Ms. Bong and she could blackmail Mija, unless that would be too corrosive to her soul. If he tells MIL where Mija is, she'd charge right over there and make a fuss or beat her up. But for no purpose, I want that money back for the kids!

Ahh, does she swindle him to get money to pay off her debt? Is that why she hesitated when the old guy asked if she had debt? You can tell I'm a bit behind, huh. If SM's children weren't being hurt by all this, I'd say, Feh! Let her (the Mij) take all the money she can! SM's whole family is greedy and cruel. They deserve all the pain they get. But you're right, Bae, she should have sat tight and SM would have kept them from sending away the kid.

KoreanWiz.org lists the character of the brother but no actor's name, so I don't think he's ever going to show Maeng Chul-soo (younger brother): ________
