EP 69 - Chicago (Aired 8-10-2005)
This was the best episode so far... in my opinion. The writers gave Ki-joon some class to ensure things went well. Insane Mother-in-law delivered her lines with her best self-centered point of view. In-Young finally got what she wanted.
One of the positive side effects of this episode is that we will see less of Ki-joon's mom. I am thankful for that alone.
The ending tried to be dramatic but it doesn't really matter. In-young wanted out. She won't care about Hee-joo. If she does, the writers are missing the greater story here.

It was very sad, but it was becoming very boring and frustrating seeing In-young, in that house, doing nothing but taking fertility treatments and catering to her malicious MIL. Finally, In-young is free. In-young will be able to start working again in Jae-min's company, maybe even develop a relationship with him.
I really thought that Ki-joon would get that apartment with both of them in mind, but he's determined to return home to his mother. Not hearing the demands and screeching voice of his mother, toward In-young, will be a relief.

I guess KJ will always be somewhat a mama's boy. can't cut the apron strings. Should have been more attentive to IY's needs instead of evil SM. At least IY can claim her self-confidence back. IMO

It was very sad, though, to see her in that apartment alone, and when Ki-joon brought her the rice. She said, "Is it really me letting this wonderful man go?" I mean, all their problems were basically external, and he let his mother's craziness ruin their marriage. It didn't have to be like that. Though most of us felt that IY and KJ's getting together was forced unrealistically by KJ, he is basically a very good guy. Look at how kind and good he is with the kids at the gym, and how he often thought up things to cheer up IY. His big problem is that he has no spine; if he could only have stood up for IY against his mother all this time, instead of just at the end, and given SM a talking-to about her selfishness and explain the situation from their POV, they might have made it. I agree with those who are incredulous that the only solution for these two seems to be divorce. What about moving out and getting a little separation between them and SM?
It made me so sad to see how SM just threw away her dutiful DIL and reverted to her previous assessment of her. She immediately forgot everything IY did and said that she was malicious for leaving. That woman does not have a charitable or kind bone in her body, and she can't understand someone being so physically and emotionally exhausted that the only thing she can do is get away. IY doesn't even have the strength to fight for her right to keep all those needles and tubes and hands out of her body.
Oh, and Aunt. She drives me crazy. She is such an enabler. I like her, but for pete's sake, she can't even talk to her own sister about her horrible behavior and cruelty? All she can do is say to IY, "Aigu, how did it get to this point? Oh well, bye."

I think that SM is stirring up some real trouble. When she said that IY wouldn't get a penny, I think she's willing to put it to the test. LOL, Lucy. Aunt is cute, but sometimes, all her side comments get so annoying.

I guess Aunt has had a lifetime of placating her older sister. Too bad Aunt wasn't the older one, then she would be in charge. (SM would still have the money, tho.) "Don't make me be the wicked mother-in-law" WHAT? Just shut up, do as I say all the time, no backtalk, and I can be nice MIL-She says that stuff seriously and no one says HUH? Too bad IY has kept her family out of it- Aunt and Grandpa would have ripped her up. That whole scene in the bedroom when SM followed IY and yelled, then KJ yelled back in support, and SM beat on him and IY got more upset--whew, it was so powerful, my hands were shaking and my legs were wobbly when I was cooking dinner. gad, I thought I was getting sick myself. Brava, writer!

I know; they always do that on the Korean soaps. Whenever someone is being a really bad person, treating others badly, they say, "Don't make me a bad person." WOW. Like, what I do and say is not "bad" unless you let me see how hurt you are, so don't let me see how hurt you are. Very weird dynamic there.

Lucy, thank you, I never saw that so clearly before you explained it. I just felt like my brain was being twisted (like, huh?) when that kind of thing happened. And noone complains about being the victim, so I thought I was misunderstanding.

You're welcome! Doesn't it drive you crazy that the children are always so good when their parents are bad? And that people in conflict don't talk to each other? Like, one person will say, "What happened, In-young? Did your mother-in-law do something to make you ask for a divorce?" And In-young will just hang her head and say, "Chesohamnida" ("I'm sorry"--i know that spelling has to be wrong). For pete's sake, why not tell someone what's on your mind, when they're ASKING? Aiguuuu!

Yes! I expected Ki-joon to apologize for his wretched mother's behavior, which was the actual cause of the divorce, but, not a word from him either. And how about that woman complaining about the cost of treatments, like it was In-young's idea. Girl, you wasted so much money having fun in the hospital, how could you force me to spend on you? Pay it back, now. Almost seems like she has a mental illness with her distorted reality. Hope KJ doesn't have to obey her about the alimony. I was so proud of IY for not answering the phone when it was SM. It's like a horror movie-IY, don't go meet her!!!

NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT WHAT THEY FEEL, in reference to what lucy said. when my mom and i were watching the episode where IY gets questioned by SM about what she plans on doing- whether divorce is the solution or not, all IY can say is Chesonghamnida and it was acurately predicted by me mum. It was so weird... JUST watching these people always apologize when someone's asking them a friggin question.
