So I checked sunday to see if Ghengis Kahn might come to the U.S. by chance, but I some soap opera came on. I didn't even sit down to watch and I already gave it two thumbs way down. So do we have to go on a year before another histroical drama series comes out from KBS?
What are all of of us historical fans going to talk about now?

Knov1 called our local station KBC and so far they told him they don't know what we will see next in place of YSS. We have not seen Emperor of the Sea yet so I hope we get that one next.

I don't want to bash Emperor of the Sea,(and maybe I am being unfair as I only viewed it up to episode 20 or so) but I think it will suffer in comparison to IYSS. Emperor is technically well made. The sets and costumes are gorgeous and so are the stars, both male and female. I liked the music quite a lot too, but overall it lacked a compelling and realistic story-from what I saw it relied too much on coincidences that were pretty far fetched.

I think KBC is hesitating to air historical dramas for two reasons. The first reason is that KBC has to buy GENGHIS KHAN directly from China since it is not a KBS drama. The second reason is that there will be a KBS historical drama gap between GENGHIS KHAN and DAE JOH-YURNG. So, if KBC did not determine yet what to air next , how about suggesting them to air TEARS OF THE DRAGON? Even though it was aired about 6 years ago on KBS in Korea, it can be said that Koreans became interested in historical dramas due to this drama. The writing & casting was so good. Since the story was compelling and very realistic. EWG, AOW, IYSS lovers will love it too.

I don't think KBC (Korean Broadcasting Chicago) is hesitating to air historical dramas. This is not the first time they coulnd not tell us the next drama ahead of time. We had a hard time finding out what would be on after Love Letter aired a second time. Maybe they like to keep us in suspense? Hopefully we will get a preview of what will be next after the special shows (1 or 2).

I believe it was Choko who said in a previous post that a repeated show about Empress Myoung-seong, last queen of Chosun, would perhaps play.

Actually, Tears of the Dragon played here in Chicago as well, but i would love to see it again, for several reasons: 1. To be able to see the whole thing, & not have to guess the schedule! 2. Looking at it with better view of Korean history, and placing it appropriately 3. Looking for familiar actors, and see how they do with their roles 4. Compare how production vales were then compared to now 5. To be able to see the whole thing, & not have to guess the schedule! i would also vote for "West Palace" as the NEXT historical drama, since it actually takes place after IYSS (kinda like Dawn of Empire aired after Wang Guhn).

In California, where KBS-LA has devoted its 8:00 PM weekend slot to KBS historical dramas since way back in the "Emperor Wang Guhn" days, the station ran a trailer during the final "Making of IYSS" episode Saturday night stating that, starting next week, this timeslot will be filled with a rather lame looking, un-subbed, Korean variety show. So, if that's right, it looks like the Mongolian epic we've been hearing about WON'T be coming to Los Angeles after all. A real bummer, too, since all the other US stations seem to so often follow KBS-LA's lead. I don't want to bash Emperor of the Sea,(and maybe I am being unfair as I only viewed it up to episode 20 or so) but I think it will suffer in comparison to IYSS. I REALLY liked "Emperor of the Sea," but I remember that it didn't impress me much until episode 12 or so. It's different, obviously, from IYSS, for though both Yi Soon-shin and Jang Bogo are genuine Korean heros (and both, interestingly, gained their fame in naval battles: Yi against the Japanese, and Jang against pirates) very little is known about Jang Bogo. So, "Emperor of the Sea" weaves in a made-up love triangle between good guy Jang, evildoer Yum Moon, and the tough-but-lovely heroine Jung-hwa. To those of us in the EWG, AOW, and IYSS fan club, that's gotta sound pretty hokey, but I tell you, once you get into the spirit of things, it was actually quite nicely done. If "Emperor of the Sea" runs in Chicago, please do give it a try.

I believe it was Choko who said in a previous post that a repeated show about Empress Myoung-seong, last queen of Chosun, would perhaps play. Well, I already posted on this (or other) board that KBS is suffering budget problem. A few months ago KBS announced that they were considering the re-air of "Empress Myoung-sung" to replace IYSS, but Korean viewer's response was quite negative about that. They wanted a new historical drama. So, KBS cancelled reairing Empress Myoung-sung and bought GENGHIS KHAN from inner Mongolia station to replace IYSS. I heard GENGHIS KHAN was not so expensive as you guys think. So, if Korean drama stations in the U.S. are not able to air GENGHIS KHAN, it is not because the drama is expensivie but because KBS (Korea Broadcasting System) has no legal right to air it overseas. Anyway, GENGHIS KHAN was not so interesting as I expected. I stopped watching it. "Shindon" is better for me. "Emperor of the Sea" is an outside product, (I mean, it was made not by KBS staff but by a subcontract production company) so KBS doesn't have distribution right, I think. I also stopped watching it in the middle of the show. In conclusion, there would be no more KBS historical dramas for a while. Watch MBC dramas. ;D

That's too bad Choko, thanks for the info. Maybe the Chicago station should air Emperor Whang Gun or Dawn of the Empire since it's not discussed here. We could all pretend we're seeing it for the first time. Besides, I had to first see the series without subtitles. Or KBS should do a three kingdoms period drama (time before emperor of the sea and emperor whang gun). Or better yet, they should do one on the Koguryo kingdom, the predecessor of Koryo dynasty. I think AOW and EWG fans might like this idea.

A complete fantasy drama. Not based on any real history.
