- Who was Nalbal's master of martial arts ?
- What did happen to Chun-Su & his friends ?
- Could Shinichi (Japanese catholic POW) return to home and see his son and his wife ? (I really hope so.)
- Where were Gong Tae-Won and Korean ninjas when YSS was in prison and after the battle of Myung-ryang ? And what did they do ?
- Where is the kitchen lady ? What did happen to her ?
And the greatest mystery is... above all
- Yi Young-nam's eyebrows.

- Who was Nalbal's master of martial arts ? He probably learned it from some dojos around his burnt down village when he was growing up. So I think that’s what happened to Nalbal but he probably excelled in it as a student. I thought it was traditional for Korean kids to study Tae Kwon Do and other Korean Martial Arts the same way American kids learn to play baseball or American football. I went to high school with many Korean students whose family recently immigrated to Chicago in the 90’s. They studied Tae Kwon Do books along with their regular schoolbooks and practiced it at their dojos on a daily basis along with baseball and basketball practice. Some of them were martial arts champions back in South Korea. I can believe them. They were pretty good fighters and sparred with my friends who wanted to practice their martial arts. - What did happen to Chun-Su & his friends ? I’m thinking South Koreans complained to the Producers that Chun Su and Hong were lame like what everyone else on this board said about Chun Su and his crew. So the Producers and director quietly had the writers cut them out. I’m in episode 85 so I don’t know what happen fully yet. Or Chun Su probably went to Japan with Akai/Hong and Mujik to become Merchants/Japanized since Chun Su himself said he despise Chosun kingdom and the people for what happened to his father with the tax collectors in his village. And I read in Military History Quarterly magazine that Chosun suffered a famine after the war. If he already lived the high life as a baron by profiteering in the war with the Jurchens and the Japanese, no reason for a greedy fat rat like him to stay there if Chosun is going through a hard time if he can make a lot of money elsewhere. - Could Shinichi (Japanese catholic POW) return to home and see his son and his wife ? (I really hope so.) That’s impossible. He had to commit Seppuku because he was captured or ask someone to execute him like the Chosunese guards since he’s Catholic (suicide is a sin in Christianity and Islam). It would bring back honor for him to die. It’s how a traditional Japanese was raised at the time. He might be seen as a pariah to his friends, family, and neighbors back in his village or town if he returns. His son would see him as a dishonored/shamed father. Not a good life to live. It’s like what happened to Lt. Han Su in episode 3 when he returned to his now blacksmith father by Konishi Yukinaga and his Japanese forces in Waekyo Castle along with the heads of Chosun military prisoners. Was Shinichi an actual historical person that Yi Soon Shin met? I thought it was odd was that Admiral Yi Soon Shin on this show was compassionate towards the Japanese prisoners when he first met Shinichi. It doesn’t matter if Gong Tae Won and Shinichi were both Christians. This is the middle ages, they were torturing, boiling, impaling, burning and/or beheading people both in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, and Asia to gather any intelligence or as punishment from the Courts of Law/Magistrates/Inquisition/Shariah whether they’re both the same religion and nationality or not. - Where is the kitchen lady ? What did happen to her ? - Where were Gong Tae-Won and Korean ninjas when YSS was in prison and after the battle of Myung-ryang ? And what did they do ? Well, as I said again I’m in episode 85 but they both probably went back to their regular lives as peasants after the war like so many people where history steamrolls past their lives. It would be nice to know what happened to Left Cholla Navy’s grandmother. What’s curious is what happened to her son before the war and why was she there in the Left Cholla base to begin with? One of the sailors mentioned something about her son but did not explained further I think.

Unknown. A lot of people suspect he went to Japan to train there. The training part cut from the series due to budget considerations.
Cut from the series due to budget considerations.
I don't think so.
Hiding out until YSS's return, like most of other YSS's followers.
Cut from the series due to budget considerations.

Was Shinichi an actual historical person that Yi Soon Shin met? I thought it was odd was that Admiral Yi Soon Shin on this show was compassionate towards the Japanese prisoners when he first met Shinichi. It doesn¡¯t matter if Gong Tae Won and Shinichi were both Christians. This is the middle ages, they were torturing, boiling, impaling, burning and/or beheading people both in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, and Asia to gather any intelligence or as punishment from the Courts of Law/Magistrates/Inquisition/Shariah whether they¡¯re both the same religion and nationality or not. Shinichi is a fictional character. But he represents the surrendered Japanese (called as hang wae) during the Imjin War. (Their number was more than 10,000.) In fact, YSS had many of them in his camp and mentioned about them in his Diary. He didn't torture the Japanese POW. He pulled necessary informations out from them and made them work for the Chosun Navy. Some Japanese POW voluntarily collaborated with YSS. They didn't come back home and they were naturalized as Korean receiving Korean names. But there were also other Japanese POW who tried to rebel against YSS or to be escaped. In this case, YSS executed them without mercy. Gong Tae-Won is a historical personage, but it's a fiction that he is a Catholic. The first Korean Catholic was Yi Seung-Hun who received baptism in Beijing in 1784. But the first Catholic who visited Korea was Father Gregorio de Cespedes. He came to Chosun with Konishi Yukinaga during the Imjin War. From this fact, the dramatists or the novelist "imagined" there would be the hidden Korean Catholics during the Imjin War. I¡¯m thinking South Koreans complained to the Producers that Chun Su and Hong were lame like what everyone else on this board said about Chun Su and his crew. So the Producers and director quietly had the writers cut them out. I¡¯m in episode 85 so I don¡¯t know what happen fully yet. It's possible and interesting theory. It's possible that Chunsu went to Japan and became a Japanese merchant. In fact, the famine in Chosun started from 1593 because the Chosunese peasants could'nt cultivate farm during the whole year of 1592. I imagine Chun-su probably went to Japan in 1593 and he would become... 1. merchant of Korean slaves 2. merchant of rice 3. merchant of ceramics 4. merchant of Korean cannons and arrows 5. merchant of everything (including # 1-4 above) It would be nice to know what happened to Left Cholla Navy¡¯s grandmother. What¡¯s curious is what happened to her son before the war and why was she there in the Left Cholla base to begin with? One of the sailors mentioned something about her son but did not explained further I think. Well pointed out, Ronin. I also wondered about her son. But no further explication. I watched IYSS up to Ep. 103. It seems that the grandmamy was kicked out without explication like many other fictional and even historical characters. About historical characters, it's okay for me because "I" know their personal stories. But the dramatists' treatment about fictional characters made me a little bit disappointed. Trespasser, I think the fictional characters were pulled out not because of the budget problem, but for the effectiveness of narrativity. If they want to spare money, it's easy to use fictional characters without any battle scene. Perhaps... the dramatists let us much room for imagination. If they make sub-stories of IYSS with same casting, I would like to view them with enthusiasm. For example, Nalbal's youth with his martial arts master, Chun-su's adventures in Japan, the Kitchen Lady and her son, Sinichi's following story, Konishi the Immortal (Konishi's story after the Imjin War) and his Korean adopted daughter (not shown in the drama), the Battle of Namwon and Shin Ho's death (not mentioned in IYSS), the omitted winter battles in late 1592 - early 1593 (the Battles of Pyung-yang, Doksung Mountain Castle, Byok-che-gwan and Haengju Mountain Castle), etc. But I know that they will not make them. *****sigh*****

KBS-LA just showed episode 89 but even so I share your disappointment ... so many beloved supporting characters gone without a trace and so much important history skipped over. I hope at the very least they give the series an "American Graffiti" ending briefly showing what became of the characters ... was the lunch lady declared a "Merit Subject" after all? ;D
