Episode 74 (?) Chicago Monday broadcast 7-18-05

wow

can i say that the producers did a great job with the battle of hansan-do? granted it was much shorter than the admiral's last fight in 1598 but still i loved how it was done. and to follow up with kwon yul's land battle was so great - i was jumping up and down on my bed like a little kid.

i loved how they drew the crane formation on paper with chinese characters and then superimposed that onto the actual battle.

what i liked the best though was seeing all the commanders on all the ships coordinating together. seeing the three admirals in their battle gear was so impressive!

and when the boats did a 180 - that wadn't too shabby neither.

Yeah! The battle was awesome. I especially liked the effect of the cannon balls flying in the air. And the overhead scenes looking down on the action. Angels' eye-view??

Every time I see one of these great battles, I wonder if Peter Jackson, the director of Lord of the Rings, is acquainted with the series. I read somewhere that his first question, when told of a new film, is "How are the battles?" I think he would love this series!

OMG, this episode was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved the look on Wakizaka's face when he realized that YSS was beating them. And I loved how at first they seemed to trick us thinking that maybe YSS was outnumbered and had no way out and then the other Naval Commanders showed up and did that crane-wing formation, I was screaming and cheering through the whole thing.

And then they showed the land battle with Commander Kwon Yul, that was pretty cool too. I mean these soldiers gave it their all. Who was the soldier that was fighting in the blue suit? That man was slaughtering Japanese left and right, even when they took him down he took a Japanese with him. He was brave man. It was sad to see him being killed, though he died defending his country.

Ah July 8, 1592 (is that right?) a day to never be forgotten. While watching the drama, I read that the victory was obviously not only YSS, but of all the soldiers who gave it their best. At that moment they mentioned the guys that rowed the ships, and I realized they must've had it really really tough. They were under alot of pressure to keep those ships moving and going. YSS was a great leader, but he also had good people under him too and that's what helped so much to win those battles. By the way I ordered YSS War Diary and can't wait to read it. I am just so amazed by YSS, I want to learn more about him.

I do have to admit one thing, though Wakizaka was ruthless and cruel, only caring for glory and honor, he had to have some sort of heart. The way he was willing to give his life for Ogawa and Manabe showed that he had feelings and did care for his men.

The visual summary of ep. 74 : The Battle of Hansan & Ichi

A Chosunese fleet led by Kim Wan and Uh Young-dam were almost overtaken by the Wakizaka's fleet.




Il-su, a Chosunese marine, got hit when he was cutting the rope of the Japanese hook with an axe. (He did not die, though)




Finally, the Chosunese fleet succeeded in luring the Wakizaka's fleet to the sea near Hansan island. Yi Sun-shin's fleet was waiting for them. However YSS realized that Wakizaka's subordinates (Ogawa and Manabe) already made ambush there. YSS unwillingly ordered his fleet to retreat from the front.


After a while, however, YSS commanded his fleet to stop retreating and make a "Crane-wing" formation.






Wakizaka sneered at the formation because YSS's warships were not enough to make the formation. However, at the next moment, other Chosunese fleet led by Yi Ok-ki and Won Kyun showed up. They joined YSS to complete the left and right wings of the "Crane-wing" formation.






Flying cannon balls, embroidered on the sky, destroyed Wakizaka's fleet.





Wakizaka, however, was watching for a chance when YSS's warships would charge their cannons with powder and shot. He made a final dash in the form of "Fishscale" formation. It was his winning card.




But YSS outwitted Wakizaka.
He made Chosunese warships turn around and said "Fire!"




Astounded by a complete defeat, Wakizak killed Kohei(=Jang Pyoung) who was bursting into a roar of laughter and sneering at Wakizaka.




For the first time in 30 years, YSS and Wakizaka met again.
Wakizaka was pointing a musket at YSS who was aiming at him with a bow.
Finally, Wakizaka got shot on his armor and fell forward.





Wakizaka barely escaped death but had to survive for a while in a desert island, eating seaweeds.




On the same day (July 8th, 1592), Kwon Yul defeated Kobayakawa Takakage's army in the Ichi slope.






After the battle of Hansan, Chung-hyang who was taking care of wounded people at the Left Cholla naval base met Yi Young-nam again. He carried a water bucket instead of her, saying "A pierced wound is not healed so easily".




Meanwhile, Admiral Yi Sun-shin heard a sad news that Jang Pyoung was dead. Mourning for his death, YSS swore to himself that he would frustrate Hideyoshi's greed.






On July 10th, 1592, YSS won another victory against Kuki Yoshitaka and Kato Yoshiaki.





In Japan, Hideyoshi forced Wakizaka's subordinates to commit suicide by disembowelment. Wakizaka shouted "No!!! Ogawa! Manabe!". Finally, Hideyoshi commanded "No more naval battles to our Japanese forces"

why did Hideyoshi say that there would be no more navy battles? So is he giving up on fighting on water?

Yes, that's right. There still remains Toytomi Hideyoshi's message saying "Don't fight with Chosunese navy any longer". He wanted to minimize the loss of warships and soldiers.
