naju.go.kr/MBoard/Board/main.html?no=9&exec=view&id=eng_culture&_page=3Admiral Cheam Na Dae-yong was born in Naju in the 11th year of King Myeongjong(1556). In the 16th year of King Seonjo(1583) he passed the Hullyon-won (the national military training center) exam at the third level. He spent ten years in his native village of Oryong-dong studying the design and production of the turtle ships(geobuk-seon). In the Bangjuk Valley fronting his village he conducted the first experiments, and in the 24th year commander of the Jeolla Province naval forces, to whom he proposed the production of the turtle ships. Afterward, at the launching of the Imjin Japanese Invasion, his proposal was accepted and three turtle ships were produced. Admiral Na, together with the general commander, archieved victories in the battles of Sacheonseung, Dangpo, Danghangpo, Gyeonnaeyang, Angolpo and Oyangdae, and after the end of the Imjin Japanese Invasion he built the battleship Changseon. After this, as governor of Namhae-hyeon, he invented the fast-sailing ship Haechuseon. His birthplace, a house facing south, is preserved in its original form, and the rooms on either end show traces of repairs in the rear. The tomb is located on hillside about 3km from the village where he was born. (Footnote: How's that for hometown pride? The folks in Naju refer to "the general commander" or "commander of the Jeolla Province naval forces" but never refer to YSS by name! Anyway my family comes from Jeonju so I'm a disinterested third party. )
