The many dangers of loading and firing muzzleloading artillery (which persisted until the latter part of the 1800's) makes it all the more remarkable that Yi Soon Shin didn't lose any men in his battles.
Most guns had a finite lifespan due to metal fatigue, and it was not unusual for old (and/or defectively made) cannons to explode in action even when their gun crews had done everything right.
