Yes, he DIED in 1597, and took 138 of Yi Soon Shin's fleet with him. It was reported that he was slayed by Japanese while fleeing.
But knowing the script writer, she will make sure Won Gyun slays a couple dozen Japanese samurais single-handedly before meeting his glorious death standing up.

Yeah, well I guess history isn't always so exciting as it exactly happaned.
The truth is Won Gyun is beheaded by the Japanese after losing the nearly the ENTIRE FLEET.
By this time, Yi Soon Shin IS IN JAIL AFTER BEING TORTURED AND NEARLY EXECUTED BECAUSE THE KING IS AN IDIOT.
I just ranted about this in the topic "Does the admiral execute the two soldiers?"
