The reason he is so mean is that he expects that everyone should live up to his expectations. This leads to inevitable disappoinments, and when you combine this with his pent-up frustrations about his revoked promotion, it's a formula for kicking the dog, or in this case the soldier.

That Commander Chung did the same thing, though, and I don't think he's too disappointed in his fate. Kicking your own men around must have been fairly common--maybe some guys just thought it was a good idea. Not everyone is made to lead.
But I think Won (the character, of course, not the real guy) was a different case. We're being made to watch the slow dissolution of a once-honorable man, and it's not pretty.

Haven't you heard? It's the cool thing to do. And I finally got up to the part where Japan finally invades Chosun. I can't wait till the next episode . I guess I can anticipate lots of gun fire and dead Chosun people

dude... i'm korean and as a korean... we get physical... been to the korean army? The officers there are probably pro soccer players or sumthing... the us army is solft comparing to korean
