Toyotomi’s real blood son (his only son) did not die of sickness or whatever as shown in episode 48. He lived several more years battling it out with Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Army. The last battle forced him to flee to the mountains where he committed seppuku at the age of 22. Toyotomi, before he died, created the council of 5 regents or the five Tairo which consisted of 5 of his most powerful daimyos that were to rule in place of his son when he became of age. Each of the 5 daimyos was to counter or check and balance each other’s power so no one would take over. However that would not be the case as Tokugawa was gaining more power and saw the boy as a threat. The 5 tairo soon disintegrated into two camps. One called “eastern army” loyal to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The other called the “Western Army” lead by Ishida Mitsunari and Toyotomi’s real son Toyotomi Hideyori who was a teenager by then. Ishida Mitsunari was Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s closest ally and was charged to protect his real son. Toyotomi had an adopted son who was actually his real nephew name Hidetsugu. But he had committed seppuku when he was an adult. The other Samurai experts might know more than me!

ronin, unfortunately you made a mistake. Yodo-gimi (aka. Yodo-dono or Chacha-hime), Toyotomi Hideyoshi's concubine, had two sons throughout her life. Her first son, Tsurumatsu, died of sickness on August, 1591 as the drama depicted. Yodo-gimi gave birth to her second son Toyotomi Hideyori in 1593, one year after the Japanese invasion. He is the person you are talking about. Hideyori and his mother commited suicide together in 1615.

Yeah Choko is right. Princess Yodo, as some might call her, gave birth to two sons. The small child (in the show) was Hideyoshi first son but he died as a toddler. Hideyoshi, rushing to keep his power from fading, named his nephew Hidetsugu as his heir. As soon as Princess Yodo gave birth to her second son, Hideyori, Hideyoshi decided to have his nephew and his relatives killed in the pursuit to keep everything calm and avoid conflicts later on about the true heir.

More evidence for the international court. What a nice guy. But, I guess everyone did that, didn't they. Bo

A man in Toyotomi's position would have had many wives and many offsprings. Who knows how many he had.
But Hideoyori's not even born yet, you will have to wait 3 more years for that.
