Is it his fault or is it just the way of the samurai? None of the above. He tried to be a world conquer like Genghis Khan and all the foreigners. The year is 1591, so take way 99 years and you get 1492. If you already knew what happened in 1492, there's your answer.

Actually, invading China was Oda Nobunaga's idea. Having freely adapted Portugese technology, Nobunaga had access to European maps and had a clear idea of the world he was living in, unlike the comtemporary rulers of China and Korea, and dreamed of going to China and beyond. Hideyoshi, like a good dog, swore that he would follow his master to the end of earth.
But after Nobunaga met his untimely death, Hideyoshi carried on Nobunaga's will and completed the conquest of Japan and marched toward China. Well, at least that's the "official" version of Hideyoshi's reasoning. Not of a personal greed, but to be loyal to his master to the end.
