When the new shipbuilding commander (I don't know his name so I'll call him Archfiend Jr.) had his men walk out on him, I couldn't help but think that we were watching the Peter Principle in action. Promoting a man that is great at his job to a position where he isn't suited. Classic management mistake.... (quoting Aging Warrior's post) Sorry about that--I accidentally hit 'return' without putting in my message. I was also thinking about the Peter Principle, but in the opposite way that you were. The problem seems to be adherence to a rigid hierarchical authority structure, rather than promotion to the point of incompetence. It doesn't seem like its his fault that the men (and the other officers) are unable to accept the promotion of a rank-and-file sailor into an officer position. Then again, he's not as good at ship design as that goofy lieutenant who almost got dismissed, so perhaps he is out of his league. [Mod from Mod - TBM - I added the part of the quote you seemed to be answering, and deleted your first post. Bo]

The goofy lieutenant, Na dae yong, was more creative and good at ship design but it was clear that su-chang was more technically proficient. There were a couple of times when Su chang had to tell Na Dae Yong that some of his ideas won't work. Instead of arguing with him, Na Dae yong just scrtached his his head like a lost kid.

It's sort of like dealing with web-design. When I did web-design, I had to balance between functionality and astectics. My boss would often come up with these wacky ideas and say so often, "Is it possible?" I would say it's been done elsewhere but the true question should have been, "Is it feasible and practical?"

Hmm...i guess that mean's Su-Chang's "uncles" are uncles becuase of the trade, and his father was real close to them, liek brothers.
Kinda like when i was 5, our neighbor was "Uncle Larry"....but i think that stuff has gone by the wayside in modern US society (where everyone, sometimes even parents, are called by their 1st name)
