[Choko]

"Kanpaku(=Kwanbaek in Korean)" means a kind of Prime Minister who exercises sovereign power instead of Japanese emperors.

The first Kanpaku in the Japanes history is Fujiwara Mototsune in 884 A.D. It means there have been a lot of Kanpakus beside Hideyoshi. Apparently, the Kanpaku title was given by emperors, but in fact, emperors has no veto right.

Hashiba Hideyoshi was appointed Kanpaku and changed his family name to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. However, he resigned from Kanpaku in 1591 when his son Tsurumatsu died. Being in deep sorrow, Hideyoshi handed the title over to his nephew(=adopted son), Hashiba Hidetsugu, and made himself Taiko.

Taiko (=Taehap in Korean) is a kind of abdicated prime minister. Maybe, Hideyoshi is the first and the only Taiko in the Japanese history. I'm not sure about that, but when people say "Taiko" it refers to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Ironically, Hideyoshi got his second son, Hideyori, form his concubine Yodo-dono in 1593. Doting on his real son, he told his nephew Hidetsugu to abdicate the Kanpaku title to the toddler. Of course, Hidetsugu felt unpleasant and have a feud with Hideyoshi. As the result, Hideyoshi killed Hidetsugu.
