bo and florel....i agree about the actor portraying won kyun. he is hard to dislike, being quite handsome and charismatic, but is doing an excellent job with the deterioration aspect.

the actor portraying chun su would indeed be more suited for the part. ;D

and skinz, i am having no problem at all disliking won kyun and have no sympathy whatsoever for him. i will say that i knew beforehand that the series wasn't giving an accurate picture of the real person. i was able to like the character as he was portrayed in the beginning but understood i was veiwing a fictional representation.

you are quite correct that others who did not have the benefit of that knowledge will indeed have some remorse over his downfall.

I can stand Won Kyun...wait no I can't. The whole right navy is filled with ignorant pompous soldiers who still underestimate the Japanese.

I really hate Chun su though...he looks annoying and is a traitor. I hope he gets executed.

Is there any reason why they're portraying the fictional Won Gyun instead of the actual one? People will obviously get misconceptions from the show... ;/

The show is based on a pair of famous anti-Yi Soon Shin novels. Won Gyun in the novel is a portrayed as a fearsome "Tiger" who destroyed Manchus in the north and was the first to engage and score a victory against Japanse fleet, that's why. Historians strongly dispute the portrayal of this fictional Won Gyun, however.

I read the novel "The Immortal Yi Sun-shin" last weekend.

It is safe to say that I don't like the novel, but I found that it is not true the novel is Anti YSS. Rather, it is anti Park Jung-hee, the former South Korean dictator in the 1960s~1970s.

Former president Park Jung-hee used to compare himself to YSS and distorted YSS's image so much to justify his coup and dictatorship.

Ironically, Kim Tak-whan, the novelist, used YSS to criticize Park's dictatorship. YSS in his novel refused to carry out a coup and chose to die for his belief. I feel like he is even apotheosizing YSS like a Jesus Christ of the Korean progressive reformists.

Actually, that's why the novel is criticized by the many conservative supporters of the former president Park and his daughter who is now the powerful leader of the conservative opposition party.

In my opinion, the conservative critics who call this drama Anti YSS are as stupid as the novelist.
YSS is YSS. He did not exist for your propaganda.

Finally, the drama is not concerned with the novel any longer. Almost every characters who make YSS a kind of Jesus Christ of the reformists in the novel already disappeard in the drama.

Let the drama do what it wants.
